I've always loved to dress up and make costumes, but my first official cosplay was for the London MCM Expo in October 2005. I lost my bus one day and walked into a shop to browse through some magazines while waiting. They happened to have the Neo magazine and I saw an advertisement for the MCM Expo. The very next day I talked a friend of mine that lives in London, into letting me stay at her place, and booked my plane tickets XD That was my first visit to the UK. There have been many more after that ;)

At the moment few of my cosplays pictures are uploaded. Had a computer crash last year, so I lost most of my pictures :( So I have to get around to take new ones... Oh well, it's an excuse to wear them again, even if it's just for an hour or so. XD

After a week of sculpting in clay (Chevant medium) the staff head has finally found it's shape. The last two days have pretty much been spent remodelling the horns, as I wasn't happy with the shape they had, and adding texture. This thing has LOTS of texture. I don't want it to look like some cheap, undetailed, plastic thing one can buy from toy stores...
All that texture should make the paintjob more fun as it will be easier to make this thing look realistic.

The close up on the right shows some of the texture on the horns. That took some time, and had to be done layer by layer. Kind of like working in photoshop. Only a lot more fun!

Astrid's first outing was Coscon in Norway (today). There's still some details missing here and there, which will be completed for Expo at the end of the month.

And yes, Astrid was attaced by a dragon! :P

are more or less complete! BELIEVE IT! (shoulder armour only lacks the skulls). So here is a WIP picture, because I needed a break from working.
The spikes on the skirt has all been sewn on individually, so the 44 spikes took absolutely AGES to put on. But hopefully that will keep them from falling off.

Also, the shape of the skirt looks horrid on this pic! XD That mannequin and this lighting doesn't work together XD

The top has been dyed. With a semi-ok result. I only wish the colour would've turned out a little brighter, but oh well. :)

I've also almost completed the sleeves, I only lack the red ribbon to go at the bottom.

Only major thing left to do is the skirt! :D And of course small details all over the place, but I think I'm getting there! And it's still some days left before Ayacon! 8D

I bought a mannequin yesterday, so now all my sewing goes three times as fast as it used to. I LOVE IT SO MUCH!! (but I still work oh so slow compared to others..)
So to try it out, I made Nuregami's base top last night. What remains to do on it is to gradient dye it green and red. Add the ribbon that goes across the chest and get frog buttons. I'm getting somewhere!! 8D

Skirt has been made. As has all the spikes for the skirt. Skirt has also been weathered. Astrid doesn't seem like the kind of girl who plays around nicely and looks after her clothes... Now the spikes and skulls just have to be fastened to the skirt.
Also, Astrid won't be worn for Desucon 6 (in Oslo). She's not anywhere near complete. And Desucon is tomorrow. So she'll be saved for Ayacon. :)

The skulls are now painted, and ready for use! Just need to make the skirt that most of them go on now...
Colours used: Skull White, Bleached Bone and Chaos Black. I absolutely love the Games Workshop paint!

Went to a Medieval Festival, and found a nice pouch for Astrid. It's not perfect in terms of shape and colour, but close enough! I chose to buy because I need Astrid done by Friday, so I'm running out of time. Found a puch - time saved. More importantly it's got a nice functioning clasp so I can keep my mobile phone and money in it. Yey for cosplays with bags! 8D

Ok, I thought these skulls would take ages to make! But they actually didn't take that long. Though, long enough to make my head feel funny after breathing clay "fumes" for too long.
9 out of 10 skulls have been made. Ran out of clay before I could start the last one. Typical >.< But I need to buy more clay to make the spikes for the skirt anyways, so no biggie.
Tomorrow they will hopefully be dry enough for me to start the fun job: painting them! :D
Shoulder armour has been made as well. just need to fasten the small spikes to it, then paint.

Wooooooo! Progress! 8D

Wig is bought! Now for the boring, agonizing waiting for it to arrive-time...

Is it here yet?

Still nothing?

Went out looking for fabric for Nuregami, mainly, but ended up finding the almost perfect fabric for Astrid's shirt and trousers! 8D Can't wait to get started!

Went out fabric shopping today. So now I (hopefully) have all the fabric I need for Nuregami. All the fabric was on sale too! 8D I'm dreading the assembly though. The design should be easy enough, but with that amount of fabric and no mannequin to drape it over... gah! I remember what a pain Eowyn's dress was.. T_T

I did the changes listed in my last entry post, and re wore it for Kotani Cup last Sunday. It works much better now, but I still see lots of possible improvements. I think this will simply be one of those cosplays I'll never complete, no matter how much I work on it.

Kotani Cup is an award given out by Mari Kotani, she is one of Japan's first cosplayers (she started cosplaying in the 70's) and now occationally travels around the world holding cosplay competitions.

At Kotani Cup I became one of the 5 winners. Woo! :D

Next, and possibly last time I'll wear it will be for a photo shoot this summer.

I got to use this dress for the Oct Expo, but there's still a lot to do on it. The most important things are the belt and the trimming around the neck. Will be done asap.

I just noticed my last journal was about not finding the right fabric, so I guess I should update with saying: fabric has been found! Fabric has been cut out and the dress is now in the process of being put together ^__^ The yoke proved to be a pain. I'm really not used to sewing fancy stuff like that. But it's almost done now, and hopefully it will look all right :) Belt pices are about 50% complete. So Eowyn should be complete for Expo! :D

Bah, I was hoping I would be finished with the dress when this weekend was over. No such luck. I spent several hours looking for the lighter green fabric for the front panel of the skirt, the yoke and for lining the arms. I bought some fabric I thought might work, but I wasn't happy with it. And now I'm not happy with it at all! So before using this fabric I'm going to have another look for a more suitable fabric tomorrow.

At least I'm done with the planning and pattern making. And I've cut out several of the dark green pieces. Fingers crossed I'll find some better fabric and can get this show back on the road tomorrow!

Angelphie, you're a life-saver! I've not got much time to make this cosplay, so your step-by-step journals on how you made the belt really helped me! Thanks a bunch! :D
I've about half-done with the belt pieces. Dress sewing will commence tomorrow! ^__^

Got the skirt and corset today. I've always wanted a proper corset, steal boning and everything. So I decided to get one made. I've ordered this one from Go visit, she has sooo much prettyness there! *_*
And while I was visiting her etsy shop, she had this skirt on sale as well, so it turned out cheaper to buy finished than to buy fabric and make the skirt myself. And seeing as I'm running out of time, one less thing to make was a good thing! XD The skirt will be pinned up properly to give it more bustle.
Now I just have to plan and make all the Steampunk elements ^_^

Melandru is officially ready for wearing! So she was used this Saturday at Coscon here in Oslo. I've posted pics as I've found them online. I'm surprised at how many there were who asked for a picture, as no one knew the character! XD I didn't have a proper shoot this time. Sooo, for a future shoot there are several things I'm going to improve on her:
- pieces of fabric around my hips: add a few more colours, and make the strips of fabric look more ragged and worn.
- make a proper headband for the "head branches", to keep them properly in place.
- back branches: not quite happy with the look of them. So improvements are needed. Will also have a look at the harness.
- bottom of legs: I did not have the time to complete the shoes or lower half of the legs. So it looks incomplete.

I'm looking forward to a future shoot with this cosplay! No idea when that will happen though.

Finally! After what has felt like months of piecing small bits of foam together, it's now complete! All that's left to do with the foam parts is a couple more layers of latex (which my boyfriend has kindly offered to do while I'm at work tomorrow, yeys!). So tomorrow will be spent painting.

Progress picture is from a couple of days ago.

Trying to get this cosplay done-ish by Saturday, so that means some hectic days to come. I'm aaaaalmost done with the texture on one leg, so just the other leg and torso details to go. Before I can paint it all, and start working on the other details.
My goal is to have to body-suit with the bark detailing done by Saturday, then the rest (leaf tails, bow, etc) will just have to follow the week after.
My fingertips are already ruined after stitching through the foam and latex suit, and I'm far from done T_T

At long last my cosplay inspiration has returned, after having more or less been absent since may (having to cancel cons because of lack of funds really cripples the cosplay drive!). After 3 intensive hours of working last night, the bark texture on the legs is about 1/4 done. I still have looots of hours of hard work in front of me on this one. Hopefully I can complete it by October 2nd, as I want to wear Melandru for Coscon (Norwegian con).

Today I tried the cosplay on for the first time. Went for a make-up test aswell. It's coming along nicely, but there is still so much to do on it, even on the part of the body that's shown on this picture. But it was useful to see what needed improving, and what to think of when shaping the next bits and pieces. :)

*faints* Hot gluing on the leaves one by one really took it's time. And that's only the branches for my back, and the branches for my right hand and shoulder done. A lot more leaves awaits for other branches and details.

..How many leaves does a tree-person need?? XD

The bark texture on the right arm is complete, so are the branches that goes on my right shoulder and my back. All that's left to do on them is to add lots and lots of leaves XD I've made a start on this, and it looks like I'll have to paint the leaves a bit, as they look a bit too bright compared to the other colours this cosplay is based on.
Harness for the back-branches is also almost complete ^_^
The bark and branches are made of wire, furniture foam. Painted with liquid latex and acrylic paints. Then some parts have got a small layers of "moss" (I used Games Workshop Static Grass)

Finally something that is complete, and that I won't have to think about again! XD I do love working on the armour parts, but I wish I had more time.

Vambrace is made out of fun foam, painted with Games Workshop paint. I had a bit of a struggle figuring out the colour of Melandrus armour parts, as the reference picture is quite blurry and the colours kinda flow into each other. I ended up with a coat of Chaos Black as a base. Then mixed Camo Green, Shining Gold and Mithril Silver untill I got a colour I was happy with. Three coats of that, then I drybrushed Boltgun Metal to get the more worn, metallic armour look.
Looking at it now, I might add some brown into the mix.. Might do another coat with some added brown later on. We'll see :)

The deadline I've had to set for at least the torso, arm and head details is closing in too fast! I need to have these parts done by the beginning of April! And I've got so much to do at work >.< Anyways: the bark texture on the right arm is nearly complete. I need to add some details here and there. But hopefully that won't take too long. Then it's ready to be painted. The leaves are in the mail somewhere between Norway and USA. Hopefully they will arrive soon. Can't wait to see how my branches will look like painted and with leaves, as they look mostly like antlers just now. Especially the big branch that goes on my shoulder. XD At least I now know how to make perfect antlers! I hope I'll need that skill at some point! XD
Details are made of furniture foam cut into shape, then painted with liquid latex.

The armour is going pretty well: plastazote with fun foam detailing. Just need to cover the white bits with fun foam now, then I can start painting that aswell.

I have spent parts of both yesterday and today wrapped up in cling film, with body suit on top, and painted myself with liquid latex. Man that stuff smells bad! >.< I just hope my landlord can't smell it upstairs, oh wells, smell is gone no, so he has no prof! >=D
The love of talcum powder? Well, it makes it so much easier to escape the latex prison! And put it back on again. XD
So now I've got a bodysuit covered in latex, when hanging it up it looks like I've skinned someone with a slightly odd skincolour XD
Next step now is shaping and sculpting the bark skin.

The bodysuit is complete at last! It will be the base for all the bark skin Melandru has, so it will all be covered in the end. Next step will be to use foam liquid latex to make the bark texture.
Oh yeah, the red top is not supposed to be there, but I did not feel like showing off myy bra tonight :P In the finished cosplay the chest area will be covered by armour, while I'm going to show off my stomach. Time to work on my sit ups!!! XD

At long last I got Melandru's wig! *dances* It has been a long road to say the least. I've spent a LONG time trying to find a wig in the right shade of golden/green. Difficult mission was difficult, as the wigs I found either was too bright green, too dark, and generally not golden at all.
Around christmas I finally found the perfect one and bought it. Turned out the seller had discontinued it (and still posted it on eBay *grumble*). So had to get a refund and what not. And had to start the search over again. Then I found this one, the colour and style is not as perfect as the previous one, but I'm happy enough. It does look a bit greener in different light ^_^ Will probably style it a wee bit in the front, but first I have to make the branch thingies that sticks out of Melandru's head XD

Seeing as this cosplay will require both armour work and liquid latex, a mannequin was needed. I don't have that.. :( So a duct tape dummy is in the progress of being made! :D Unfortunately after having finished only one arm for me, and Mysterious Fayth's torso (he needs one for one of his planned cosplays), we ran out of duct tape, so it abruptly ended for us today. We'll continue tomorrow with this project, though that is not something I'm looking forward to. Making a duct tape dummy is a paaaaaain! T_T

Collar has been completed (only needs hooks/clasps to keep it together in the back now).
Made out of furniture foam and leatherette. The triangle bit is made out of fimo.

...gawd I hate hand stitcing leatherette! My poor fingertips T_T

Nia might be one of the cosplays I'm bringing for Amecon this year, so I've finally made a start! Woo! :D
Wig is bought, can't wait till I get it, so I can see if it will actually work for her XD
All materials are bought aswell, just need to start putting things together now ^_^

Patterns are truly a pain to make, especially when the reference pics don't show excatly how the finished item is supposed to look like. Well, hello artistic freedom! XD Managed to finish the pattern for Asta's front armour. Just shoulder, elbow and ribbon pieces left to do. But I won't make the pattern for those untill I've made the jacket.

I've been out shopping, and I've found most of the fabric I need (like a wonderful royal blue for the jacket and hat =D) and the beads I need for some details on the hat and collar. Have also bought some of the red jewels that seem to be all over Asta's outfit o.O I emptied the shop, but I still need about twice as much as I've got XD Also need to find some that are about twice as big.. The ones I've got now are about 1,5 cm in diameter.
Btw, does anyone know the name of those jewels? They look like diamonds on one side, are flat on the other, and has a small hole on each side so that it's possible to stitch them to fabric. I need a name for them so I can see if I can find more in eBay... =S
