Sakura Kinomoto (1st Opening) - Cardcaptor Sakura/Cardcaptors

Kitacon Karnival

Showcased 30th April 2020 What is this?

I've wanted to cosplay Sakura since I knew what cosplay was. I'd always been intimated by the abundance of adorable Sakura's but decided I would just go for it and finally cosplay my childhood heroine.

For the dress I chose a kind of coral shade that is a mix between orange/red/pink as the references differ so much. I got a ton of samples but I'm really happy with the cotton sateen I ended up with - it has a lovely shine but not too much! The dress is a pretty simple design with a huge circle skirt and a concealed zip. I added horsehair braid to the hem to give those clamp style ruffles to the skirt, and also added yellow ribbon.

This hat is the first one i've ever made! It's a huge big circle sewed into an elasticated band with a HUGE bow sewn on the back. It's also stuffed with stuffing to add that Sakura POOF. The whole thing stays on my head with the addition of a few of those wig clips you usually get on the front of lacefront wigs. They worked really well, the hat is very heavy but it didn't budge all day!

The shirt is a really adorable addition, also made from cotton sateen it has big puffy sleeves and I used satin ribbon and lace for the details. A detail that nobody will probably ever see is that all the buttons are little hearts! :3 I also added the two bows to the sleeves which are easily removable for washing etc with safety pins.

The gloves were modded, I added the lace and bows, and I also added lace to the socks. There are actually six bows on this costume! I'm a pro at making them now!

The underskirt was the beast of this costume and took longer than all the other parts combined. It's three layers and three tiers held together with a elasticated waistband. I can't even imagine how much fabric is in it! I had to gather SO MANY LAYERS over SO MANY days! But it's definitely 100 meters + in the underskirt alone! The top two layers are tulle and the bottom is more cotton sateen. I think it was worth all the effort as I was determined to be as poofy as I could be! :P

Finally, the wig was bought from spreepicky and required a little cutting and styling, while the staff head and bottom were purchased from chompworks, I painted them and LittleGeeky kindly provided the pole for me! :3

I can't get over how much I love this costume, such an iconic version of her and you've done her so well. The shapes are amazing, that hat, that poofy skirt - and it all looks so clean~
