Amecon 2016

Showcased 26th July 2015 What is this?

27th July 2015 - Thank you so much for the Showcase!

This was my first sewing project so I was a bit daunted, but I'm pleased with how it turned out.

Tailcoat and trousers/boot covers were made through a lot of pattern modification from shades of suiting fabric, with bias and interfacing where required. I also tried to make them as tailored as possible to accentuate Clamp proportions as much as possible. My legs are really long anyway but I found that the fit of the trousers really helped with making them look even longer (I made the first pair with a pleat at the top but decided that didn't really work as well).

The cloak is crepe, and it took me ages to find the perfect colours. I wanted something that had a naturally weighted hang to it but I was very particular about the combination of a regal red with a blue/black. The collar is both interfaced and wired under the bias.

All bias is homemade from the same satin as the patterned areas. Again, I was very particular about colour and I also wanted the bits to match. Patterned areas are attached with Heat n Bond. I did try out some techniques with applique but found this to be the best way to prevent fraying and give it a crisp outline.

The mask is made from layered foam coated in Worbla. Painting was with a matt black but I dulled this further with Rub n Buff. I haven't really considered what material the mask might be in the series but I guess I was aiming for a slightly metallic look. I used clear Worbla for the blue dome, painted with glass paint and auto tint to prevent two-way visibility. It's fully wearable and you can see through it reasonably well.

Accessories - I crafted a little King chess piece from leftover Worbla (the pieces in CG differ from regular ones so buying wasn't really an option); the gloves are basic store bought black satin but I intend to make these before October so they accentuate the length of my fingers better (again, trying to play on Clamp proportions!). The under-mask is a cycling mask I wear under the helmet, and the cravat is stitched from basic white satin with a little button on it that I thought looked rather like the Geass symbol). Boot covers now attach completely to the base boots, which are now purple, as per the series. :) I have made a waistcoat, which fits under the tailcoat, but I rarely wear this since it's never seen and conventions have a tendency to be very warm!

I really enjoyed making this, and it was fascinating to see the big differences in Zero's costume between R1 and R2 (something I hadn't previously appreciated) when I was going through references. It was great to finally be able to get over my fear of sewing and cosplay one of my absolute favourite characters.

Other details - wig is Arda natural black, cut and styled by me (in earlier pics I used a different wig but Hyper Japan onwards is this one); purple lenses are from Honeycolor; Geass lens is from Goddess Boutique.
