Kitacon Karnival

Yorkshire Cosplay Con - 1st place handmade (with Crazedteensie)

Showcased 8th May 2016 What is this?

This has been a dream group of mine for some time, but I had planned on being Mami originally! Making this costume has been a ridiculous adventure, and I think it's been one of the most challenging projects I've ever done.

The petticoat alone took over 100 hours of ruffling and sewing. I followed the Rufflebutt tutorial and love the mushroomy result, but I heartily recommend NOT doing it by hand! I used 6 circle layers of crystal organza and one of fairy organza, but if I were to ever do this again, I'd fork out for something a bit stiffer. Between these layers is 4 or 6m of gathered hard tulle, depending on where in the skirt they are.
The bodice is a combination of 3 simplicity patterns to get the basic shapes, then serious alteration to get the fit. I used varying shades of pink cotton, and yellow 'dress fabric', with superthin interfacing and lining. The petal skirt was dip-dyed with Powder Pink dylon.

The bow is coat hangers wrapped in masking tape and covered in worbla. I managed to get a fake rose for a quid, so the materials combined cost me less than a fiver (thank you based coscraft vouchers!)

Despite moaning so much all the way through making it, I really enjoyed this project! I've made a few mistakes along the way but I'm happy with how it looks and cannot wait to wear her!

Petticoat Abyss 3 : At last I see the light

IT IS DONE It's taken about 100 hours of fray-checking, sewing, ruffling and altering later, the petticoat is to a point I feel I can wear it and it look okay. It's not perfect, the layers seem to grow and shrink of their own accord, but for all intents and purposes, it's done and I can actually do something else!

Petticoat abyss 2: gross sobbing

I was right, this IS the story of how I died, or at least the nerves in my hands did... I'm about halfway through the 6th layer and I've started dreaming about ruffles. Each layer of petticoat has had ruffles sewn around each side of the bottom hem, then the ribbons were flipped the right way and tacked together. THEN each layer had a long strip of tulle gathered onto it for extra fluff. There are horsehair supports on the 3rd layer, so the upper layers don't crush the bottom layers as much (they've EATEN the shortest layer send help) If you ever decide to embark on the rufflebutt madoka tutorial: DO NOT HANDSEW IT did I mention my hands are dying This skirt is much fluffier than in the photo. I've hung it up oddly, and I think one of the layers has gone into hiding...or the skirt is eating itself haha

Petticoat abyss 1

Today I gathered 100yds (approx 88m) of ribbon into ruffles, thanks to Crazedteensie kindly letting me steal her machine for the evening! I still have 1 22m (25yds)spool left in case I run out or have a ruffle emergency c: Everyday I'm rufflin' (not my pun)

This is the story of how I died

Over 20m of different fabrics and 100m of ribbon later, and I think I might have enough fabric for the Petticoat of Death... I'll be following the Rufflebutt tutorial as much as I can, but I think this cosplay is going to be the end of me haha
