Sandshrew (gijinka) - Pokemon

Information

It wasn't a bandwagon I wanted to jump on...(and besides, by now it's long gone anyway) but after recently getting acute Pokemon nostalgia and looking through the Pokemon gijinka designs again I really couldn't help but find myself wanting to do one, some of the designs are too cute XD;; I feel like such a hypocrite... lol oh well

Anyway, conviniently (and almost scarily so) I've gotten an excuse to make a Pokemon gijinka cosplay afterall, so I've decided to go with Sandshrew. It was always one of my favourites and on my team in Red/Blue (ah, the good old days...) and the gijinka has a really simple but cute design. I also wanted to avoid buying a new wig for such a simple cosplay so this works out fine as I could either use my own hair or my Haruhi wig, both would work I guess.

@Kuma, sjbonnar, Defrain, Kitticus, MoonLily - Thankyou~! :'D @Ryaoki - I can't really take credit for that, I didn't make those bits from scratch XD; the hoodie is made from two existing hoodies (a yellow one and a grey one) sewn together! The brown bits are fabric paint and the ears are made from the leftovers. I wish I could do proper elastic cuffs too D= but I can't which is why I did it like this instead.

@gaming_goddess, Aotashi, My__RoadOfBlood - Thanks for the comments! I think Mud Shot is one of my favourite photos, it took quite a few attempts to get it right XD;; most of the credit going to hitachiin's photography timing skills haha

@SuzuNyan, Chii-ren, SachikoYumi, Stripeycow - Thankyou~! :D @Chii-ren - oh dear, I hope I can help a bit @_@ Well, each ear is made from three triangles of the same size, sewn together and then turned inside out so you can't see the stitching/hems. They were then sewn into the hood that also had a triangle hole cut in to sew the ears into. The front of each ear I also cute a small triangle in and folded over the edges to make it bigger and keep them neat and then backed it with the grey, gluing it all down. The ears are stuffed with wadding you put in soft toys to keep their shape. That's the basics of the way I did it... Ah, I'm worried my explanation isn't helping much XD;; I hope it has but if you're still stuck maybe I could draw a diagram or something? Might be easier to understand than me haha

Progress Journal

1st April 2009

Dig dig dig...

Almost done now! I should really have updated this more often but there wasn't that many stages of progress to be had...

The hoodie is all made now and just needs Sandshrew's strange brick pattern painting on it. I'm thinking of leaving off the lines on the pants since my paint isn't dark enough and they look alright plain, I think. Also, even though the design doesn't have them I decided to add some tabi socks to it since I don't want to be barefoot and I think they kind of look like Sandshrew claws anyway XD

Either way, I'm far too happy over how this has come out for being such a simple costume since it's the first thing I've done entirely by myself XD (yes...I used a sewing machine...and it didn't eat me @.@ maybe there's hope for me yet)
