Ruby - Final Fantasy IX

Worn to:
- Midlands MCM Expo February 2010

My sister wanted to plan a Tantalus group, and I've always wanted to cosplay Ruby (because I think she's a fantastic character and I love her), so I claimed her right away. Now I get to say things like a southern belle and be a girly-girl with ballerina shoes. :B

And I also get to have that RUBY-RUBY-RUBY-RUBY song sung at me all day. OH THE JOY. :|

Anyway, after I decided to give up on cosplaying Eiko Carol from FFIX (the costume just didn't turn out the way I wanted it to), Mungojerrie and Crazedteensie suggested that I cosplay Ruby instead. :) I decided I might as well at least try to start the costume, as I and our cosplay group had various spare fabrics I could put to use, and I already had some items that I could use, too.

The headdress is made out of some old blue t-shirt fabric I had left over from an old sewing project, so I just sewed a couple of strips together and stylised a sort of bow where the tie is. The shirt is made out of some white cotton that was bought for a costume for my boyfriend, but he wanted me to use it for this instead, as there was no point in spending money on buying more of something I already had! I also sewed some ribbon onto the sleeves, as Ruby has black bands on hers, and added elastic to make the sleeves poofy.

The waist cincher/corset is made out of some brown, leather-ish feeling/looking fabric that my sister had bought for making belts - however, she'd bought way more than she needed (because she bought it for our whole group, really) and let me use some to make the waist cincher. I embroidered some flowers and vines onto it using silver thread and some sparkly gems, as Ruby has a pattern on her cincher but I wanted to make something pretty. :) The belt is one borrowed from my dad!

The skirt is made from what I assume to be green cotton - my mum had made an ankle-length skirt for one of my sisters when her acting group performed Wicked, and as she didn't need it anymore, she gave it to me to use. I added some elastic to make it poofy, and cut it to the right shape for Ruby. :) I'm not 100% happy with it, but I'm pleased enough with the way it turned out.

I already owned a pair of long white gloves, which I cut to make them wrist-length and added some lace donated by CrazedTeensie. I made the garter out of some elastic lace I found in the local fabric store, and I already owned the socks and choker. The shoes are a pair I already owned, and I made straps out of some pink lycra I had.

All in all, I'm happy with the way my Ruby cosplay has turned out, and it was good fun to wear with my fellow FFIXers at February Expo 2010! :D
