Claus F. Lester - Tales of Phantasia

Tales of Phantasia was first released in Japan in 1994 and was the first in what would be know as the Tales series that would include Tales of Eternia, Tales of Symphonia, Tales of the Abyss and Tales of Vesperia. There have been a few versions of the game on different systems although the Game Boy Advance version was the only one with an English language release. Claus is one of the main party members and happens to be a summoner of the spirits that exist in the world.

The core of the costume was based on Japanese clothing. The trousers came from the mompe, a garment that finishes just above the ankle. It was made from red Poly-cotton drill in an attempt to create the right texture. The top is called a jimbei and was made from cotton drill that was dyed to find the best colour match. The jimbei has two sets of ties to keep it together one that ties the right side to the inside of the left and another secure the left. The cape was made completely from scratch using suedette. There were problems with this as originally fabric was going to used for the design however a test did not work so well. It didn't look very good and the paint soaked all the way though. So white suedette was cut to shape a sewn by hand. The hat was made using suedette that was attached to card to keep it in shape. It was a bit of a pain because it wouldn't stay on very well.

This costume was my first one that had a wig. Styling was a bit of a nightmare for me. Fortunately I had a good deal of help. The biggest problem was that on the day the style wouldn't hold which in the wind wasn't great.
