Catwoman - Batman Arkham City

I wanted to do a catwoman costume since I started getting into the batman franchise about 6 months back. I originally planned to do one of the other ones, but when I saw this design I loved it - and loved the challenge it would be.

After cursing that challenge, it's finally done. The main difficulty in making this costume was the pattern on some of the panels. I've seen a good one of this costume before where the person has the pattern printed on, but at $45 a yard, I couldn't quite justify that. So after trying a layer of fishnet over the top, then a stencil, I finally settled for drawing the pattern on by hand with silver pens - though it's taken ages, I like how it's turned out.

The whole thing is made of lycra with satin piping (which I spray-painted to the right colour) with leatherette details. It is so nice making a catsuit out of lycra - I can actually sit down without ripping stuff! The goggles are made out of plastezote with perspex lenses that I cut and shaped. The claws, arm details and knuckle plates are made out of milliput. The boots I bought off ebay (the only bit I bought - woohoo) were the closest I could find but with a slightly thicker heel so I don't fall over too much.

Aww wow, this should be great! Its one that is so awesome, but scares me half to death if I even thought of attempting it! Good luck!

"I'd love feedback on what people think of the fishnetting for the detailing on the suit (obviously over the lycra)" How about trying the netting fabric on the inside of the lycra. The pattern might catch the light and be a more subtle way of achieving the textured pattern.

Thanks everyone for the nice comments Ranma1-2 : Sorry, I should've changed that picture - I've since started drawing the pattern on to get the proper triangle pattern, as in the new images. Thank you for the idea though - that will probably be very useful for getting the detailing on my resi5 Jill battlesuit ^_^

Ranma1-2 posted on 10 February, 2012 - 00:09
Yeah there are lots of costumes with interesting patterns on the fabric, esp from computer generated images. Drawing or painting the design on our own custom fabric seems like the only way..unless you know someone who has access to some amazing fabric printing machine. :S

Do you have a day you're doing this?? I'm going with a group of Arkham City (plus Scarecrow) cosplayers

Zelvyne posted on 20 February, 2012 - 23:20
Ranma 1-2: Oops, sorry for such a late response. Got to agree about the strange computer-generated patterns >_<. I did find one place online that would print onto lycra, but at a charge of about $50 per yard >_<. If I met someone with a fabric printer, I think I would kidnap them (and it) =p NixieThePixie: I'm not entirely sure yet, but probably for at least part of the Saturday and Sunday, but I'm flexible as I'd love to get piccies with other Arkham City cosplayers ^_^. I'll probably be wandering around with a Deadpool, Batman and Black Cat for some more comic-book-based goodness ;)

NixieThePixie posted on 20 February, 2012 - 23:30
Well, I'll definitely be the Riddler on the Sunday. It just depends on the other days lol (might be wearing it for all three cause I'm a Riddler fangirl). I go annoy the others about it XD make sure we're hovering about in our costumes on at least one of those days (I think Sat was chalked up anyway).

Feedback - looking good ^_^ Im really liking your textured pattern, those seprate panels are interesting part of the design. Boots - how about kitten heel boots, (Ive seen kitten heel boots on eBay.) Heels on them are really low but styled to look like high heels. :)

I see you managed proper high heels in the end :) Looks great, I especially love the printed /textured fabric you used.

Zelvyne posted on 27 April, 2012 - 15:01
Thanks all for the lovely comments Ranma1-2: Haha, yeah, in the end I braved the heels, though my goodness did my legs ache after that weekend ^_^' And I'm glad you liked the pattern - it took a long time as I had to draw it on by hand, but I think it was worth it.

Ranma1-2 posted on 27 April, 2012 - 19:45
Its cuz you are not used to heels - keep wearing them and your legs will get stronger so eventually they wont ache ( much ^^) Woah I didnt realize you drew the pattern on! @.@ I just assumed it was some new fancy fabric which I havent seen before, the pattern is so neat and regular.. Can you take me through how you go about drawing on a pattern like that please. :)

Zelvyne posted on 27 April, 2012 - 20:59
Haha, well I suppose the pain is worth it - I'll keep trying to get used to them, thanks :) Sure, I'll pm you or put up a journal - I don't want to spam the comments too much, lol

Starbucks dad posted on 29 April, 2012 - 14:16
" I just assumed it was some new fancy fabric which I havent seen before, the pattern is so neat and regular.." Totally agree with Ranma as I'd thought the same. Takes the level of excellence to a whole new level!

Progress Journal

8th April 2012

Woohooo, I've finally finished this. I'll upload some pictures soon, then there'll be the barage of piccies from Kita ^_^
Sinec i'm quite happy with this, I might re-wear it at may expo

13th March 2012

Right, too lazy to take pictures, but thought I'd list the progress I've made so far.
Both the legs are attached, so they don't have the bulging at the top like the progress pic with the single leg does. Lo and behold, I can actually move in this thing - much nicer than the battlesuit Jill costume.
The arms are both made, so I've just got to sew them up the side and attach them.
The lenses have been cut, re-cut, shaped, re-shaped (lots of trial and error), but they're finally a good size and shape, so I'm happy. I should be looking into making the frames over the next few days.

The rest of it is pretty much planned, except the hood (no idea how I'm going to make that yet =/).
The remaining tasks are:
Attach arms, add detailing
Add straps and buckles to sides / front
Make hood
Make frames and strap for goggles
Make gloves, add detailing
Add straps to shoes
Make whip loop

Not a huge list, but considering there's a month 'till kita, that's just as well.

And while I have this set for Kita, I'll probably be rewearing it to MCM May 2012

Whip and boot hunting

Well, I've been looking into bits of this costume for a while now, with limited success.
for the boots, I'm looking for ones with almost no heel just so I can walk in them. Unfortunately lace-up boots seem to be out of fashion at the moment, so I'm ebay-trawling for them.
Equally, looking for a sensible looking whip has been tricky, with most cheap ones being thin ones for ... well, adult pasttimes. This is definitely not the kind of thing I was after, so I've plaited my own out of paracord using a simple 4-strand plait. I'm going to spraypaint it black and attach a handle soon and should have piccies up asap ^_^
