Octavia Montmariel - Arcanepunk

Amecon 2010

My big costume project of 2010. I haven't got any photoshoot pictures of this ready yet, but when I do, I'll be sure to put them here <3

Octavia was born with the ability to place a part of her consciousness into objects and manipulate them at will. She has known this since birth, but did not find out until she was older (and in an arranged marriage with an abusive French General, Iven Montmariel) that she could also manipulate the minds of people. Stepping unexpectedly into Iven's mind on one occasion to fend him off, she drew back minutes later to find him dead. But she had not come back to her mind alone - she had brought the consciousness of her husband back with her. Now Octavia and Iven fight for control of the body they both inhabit, and she must live with the burden of what she's done every day. She swore never again to use her power to manipulate humans. She travels the world seeking out a necromancer to resurrect her husband's body so she can send his consciousness back. She makes money for her travels by selling small devices that people ask her to make, which she then goes on manipulating with her mind. The moment she stops thinking about these objects, they stop working.

I based Octavia's design on the concept of her slowly losing her existence to Iven, who is inevitably winning the fight for control. I looked into Victorian mourning dress for her basic design, using colours and styles restricted to women in that time. I added a flash of bright pink throughout the costume to hint at her magickal ability, as it's not exactly a recurring colour in Victorian times.

The most time-consuming part was the skirt, which involved 4 hours of pleating, which I then had to take to the stove to create the burned effect all the way around it. I was so nervous DX

My staff was made by the ever talented Death May Die from wood and milliput. I love it so much <3
