James Sunderland - Silent Hill 2

Ayacon 2011

I've been wanting to do a Silent Hill cosplay for some time now so I'd like to cosplay as James sometime since he's my favourite character from the games. So far I've played Silent Hill 1, 2 and am currently playing Origins and I just find him to be more likeable than Harry or Travis and he has the most engaging story out of all of those in the series.

I've always liked the design of James's army jacket so cosplay would be the perfect excuse to get one =P There did used to be an offical one available to buy back when the game came out but I didn't buy things online or cosplay then (and still don't shop online very often) and they are rare to find now, plus I've also heard that they weren't that good anyway :(

I've looked at some online army surplus shops to see if there are any that look practically the same (except for the little flag which I could just add on myself). There are many which are very similar in both colour and type of material but I can't find one where things like the shape of the lapels and the placement and number of pockets are accurate enough (yes, even with more casual-looking cosplays I still really like them to be accurate =P). So it looks like it will be down to a choice of either buying a jacket from an army surplus store which doesn't quite have the same lapels and seams etc. but which is in the correct colour and heavy material, or of having one commissioned so that all the shapes are correct but would most likely not end up being the right texture and weight.

I'd like to do this for October Expo 2010, but it may be postponed until 2011 due to lack of funds and a couple of other cosplays taking priority.

Well unfortunately the plan to have this ready for the Sunday of this October's Expo ( Halloween ) did end up falling through due to lack of funds. And I specificly wanted to wear it to one of the London Expos, so I will reschedule this for May and October 2011.

I finally got to wear this for the Friday evening and Saturday of AyaCon 2011. Unfortunately the technique I tried to use for doing the badge designs didn't work, so I still consider the jacket as a work-in-progress until they are sorted. I was really happy to find the solution in Aya's Dealers Room, though. I found someone who embroiders custom patches for cosplays and the samples she had on display at her table looked like just the kind of quality that I'm after. I found that she makes full costumes too, so I have booked a slot with her to get both the badges done and the jacket re-made more accurately in time for October's Expo. When that's done I will probably buy a couple of Foxhound badges and sew them onto the side of each sleeve to turn my current one into a random Metal Gear jacket ( just because I've always wanted one ) ^_^ The steel pipe was made from 2 kitchen-foil tubes which I painted with acrylic and stuck together with super-glue. Because I couldn't just slide the foil off the tubes I ended up with a foil ball I didn't need that was the size of a football XD

So yeah, Aya was more of a test run. I did spot a Pyramid Head and a nurse on the Saturday afternoon but I missed out on getting pictures with them because they went into Costcutter's XDDD

The jacket is finally complete and actually looks like James' actual jacket this time! =D Many thanks to Shido of Paper Cranes Cosplay for making it for me and getting all the details in. She even put the pull-cord things in the cuffs which was something I didn't expect and much appreciate =) The only thing I'm still missing are the rings that he has on the side of his boots. Hopefully I will be able to get some soon, but I'm happy enough with this now to wear it to proper photoshoots ^^

I finally got to wear this to the Silent Hill photoshoots at October Expo 2011 which Quinzel and I had been planning for ages. We acted out some Rosewater Park scenes by the waterfront with Quinzel as Maria on the Friday, and on Sunday did another photoshoot in the carpark for which she cosplayed as Elle Holloway from Silent Hill: Homecoming. Many thanks to RenDMC, Ichigo-chan and Frederica la Noir for helping out with the photography, and it was great meeting those of you that I hadn't met before ^^ Though we had some problems getting some good night-time pics at first I managed to take some shots of Maria and also Barry from Resi that I was especially happy with after tinkering with the camera settings. And I was a bit annoyed at myself for managing to pack the light blue, purposefully baggy jeans that I had bought for my L cosplay instead of the navy, non-baggy ones that I had bought specifically to match the ones James wears - *head-desk* Oh wells...

Since most of my favourite characters tend to have more down-to-earth outfit designs I wasn't expecting to be stopped for a lot of photos but we did have a couple of pictures taken of us when we were walking around as James and Maria on Friday evening, a friend that I hadn't seen in ages actually recognised who I was cosplaying as (my other friends don't play Silent Hill), and someone seemed really happy to see a James cosplay on the Sunday so that made me happy that there were at least a few other Silent Hill fans around =)

Oh wow, don't think I've ever seen a James cosplay ^_^. Shame you're not doing this for October Expo - I'm gonna be Maria XP. Silent Hill 2 is a classic! I think your best bet for the coat might be to go for one that matches in colour/material and modding it a little...it may mean buying two of the same coat to get the right material for additional pockets but it could work :). Good luck with this! Looking forward to seeing it finished.

Looking forward to seeing this :D good luck!

Thanks a lot ^_^ Unfortunately he's having to be pushed back again for the moment since the commissioners for the jacket didn't follow half of the design properly >_< but I am still determined to get this ready to go in time for this year's AyaCon or October Expo ^_^

Quinzel posted on 12 June, 2011 - 01:32
Omg, if you got the radio to hiss static, that would be so awesome! ^_^ I'm loving the test shot - wish I could make it to Ayacon :(. I hope you can find the right fabric for the jacket; you're going to look so awesome >.<

Tsuchinoko posted on 12 June, 2011 - 22:37
Thanks Quinzel. Yeah I'll need something to warn me from the monsters, I love bringing extra props for my cosplays ^_^ It's a shame you can't make it to Aya but I will have to see you for sure at October Expo if you're still doing Maria. If only we could find a Pyramid Head and some creepy nurses as well...

Quinzel posted on 13 June, 2011 - 00:01
:) I love all the detail you're putting into this. Yes, I'm still doing Maria - she's my only definite plan at the moment hah. As soon as my cons for the summer are over, I'll be diving straight into putting her together. There is someone on the Expo forums who said they are going as Pyramid Head all weekend...there are usually a few wandering around - I really do hope we see some nurses too :). Downpour is out in October (I think :/) and the new movie might see a release at the end of the year so I'm hoping it inspires some people to cosplay from Silent Hill! Also hoping for fog XD.

Tsuchinoko posted on 14 June, 2011 - 21:58
Excellent! Yes, I did count 3 Pyramid Heads at this May's Expo. There seemed to be a lack of nurses this time though which was kind of surprising since they've become quite popular lately... Maybe after Aya we can ask if any PHs or nurses would like to join us for a Silent Hill 2 group. The main reason I wanted to cosplay James at the Expo is that the car-park would be a great place for a Silent Hill photoshoot and the railings by the river could be used for Rosewater Park shots. I'm also now wondering if there's an elevator near the stairs to the cash machines and car-park that we could get pics by as well. Haha, it would be so awesome if we got fog - I guess we could see if we could get some fog from the magic of Photoshop afterwards... =P And heck yes I'm so looking forward to Downpour and the next movie! I've been enjoying looking at the new Downpour trailer and bits of in-game footage that have recently been released. I really love how the scenes shift to the " Other-world " and in one scene it looks like you have to try to outrun it down a seemingly never-ending corridor! 0,o I'm looking forward to finding out Murphy's story ^_^ ( and I shall have to finally get a PS3 ) ( long comment was long - gomen ) XD

Quinzel posted on 14 June, 2011 - 23:57
Yeah, I don't think I saw a single nurse last Expo :(. Shame. I was actually thinking that it would be a good idea to post a thread to recruit some people :P. Figured it would be better to wait until nearer the time, since people's plans do tend to change closer to the event. So it's a great idea :D I had the same thoughts about the railings by the river too ^_^. And yeah, the car park would make a great location as well...and there is an elevator somewhere out of the way (I've seen photos of Resident Evil cosplayers there) that we could use. Could be good for re-enacting Maria's first death haha. It would be really easy to add fog on Photoshop too, yeah :). I'm sure it wouldn't be too difficult to recreate James's Otherworld as well, since it was kind of murky and looked water-damaged. Ah, I love the new gameplay clips from Downpour :P. I love how you can use anything as a weapon; I think that could really spice up boss fights. That scene where he is running from the red light reminded me of the haunted house in Silent Hill 3 ^_^. That was the weirdest part of a seriously weird game. I hope they include Robbie somehow...he has me so excited about the new movie lol. And I like how it's Murphy's story, and it's not connected to the rest, because that's essentially what Silent Hill 2 was - and 2 is still the best of the series by far. Noooo, long comment ftw :P. I could seriously talk for hours about Silent Hill haha. I'm really excited for October now >.<.

Tsuchinoko posted on 17 June, 2011 - 00:25
lol That's good, I tend to try not to write big blocks of text too often in case I seem to be rambling on too much or going off topic XD Yeah, I was thinking we could re-enact Maria's first death by the elevator, and if we find a Pyramid Head to join us in the car-park then they'd probably have trouble getting down the stairs and would need to use it anyway XD That's a point about editing photos to look like James's Other-world, I guess I could give it a go... And yes the red light reminded me of Silent Hill 3 as well. I also like that Murphy moves a lot more smoothly, like when he opens doors seemlessly (instead of it loading a new area), and climbs ladders and I really like that they borrowed the options from Shattered Memories to look behind you and pull over obstructions while running from enemies. It all looks a lot less " clunky. " Using everyday objects as weapons and ways to smash locks looks great, too. I just hope that there are some non-breakable melee weapons that you can keep with you throughout the game as well. I used the punch-and-stomp method for almost everything in Origins apart from the boss battles because I didn't want to waste all the breakable weapons, and one of the creators has commented that punching doesn't have too much effect in Downpour. I'm glad that it will be unconnected to the first game as well. Not that I don't like the other games but we've already had 4 games that have ended up being about stopping the town's cult (and I can't comment on Homecoming because I haven't had a chance to play it yet and have been trying to avoid details on the story). I think Silent Hill 2 definitely had the most impact because it was just about the characters' own personal demons which allows for more character depth. Shattered Memories is the only one I felt managed to be on the same kind of level as 2, though I see that as completely seperate to all the other games since it's alternate universe and a re-imagining. With Murphy being an escaped prisoner I'm sure that he must have a really interesting story to tell as well... And it actually didn't cross my mind to think if Robbie will be in the next movie. I really hope that he is because he's so wonderfully creepy (they should try and sneak a shiba inu into it, too) XD

Quinzel posted on 17 June, 2011 - 21:48
The seamless loading was present in Homecoming too but it looks like you can travel through a larger area without having the loading screens with Downpour. The environment looks a lot richer too. I love interactive environments :P. There are melee weapons (you can see the axe and steel pipe) but apparently you can only carry one at a time :O. I guess that's okay, because I tend to stick to the steel pipe lol. But if the enemies are going to be as tough as they were in Homecoming, it's going to cause problems. Totally. I wish that they would concentrate on individual stories like SH2 because the universe has a lot more scope there. I struggle to think how many more fresh ways they can tackle The Order. The characters from SH2 are far more memorable because the game was essentially exploring their psyches. I keep finding myself wanting to know more about the characters :(. Haha, how awesome would it be if they did a dog/UFO ending for the movie? :P

Tsuchinoko posted on 18 June, 2011 - 19:33
I see. Yeah, I really love interactive environments as well and I'd heard that Homecoming is more action-oriented than the other games. Hopefully the balance for Downpour shouldn't be too bad since there's a video commentary which mentions that you can usually get away okay if you run between them. I'd prefer if you could carry several melee weapons at once but I would most likely stick with the lead pipe as well ^_^ I wish that someday they would do a couple of new games where you get to do Silent Hill 2 from Angela and Eddie's points-of-view, since they both had stories which were worth exploring further and you never did get to find out what kind of an ending Angela got. And it would be interesting to see the differences there could be in the scenes where James met them (for example Angela would have kept seeing fire when James didn't and would have had different monsters to deal with).

Quinzel posted on 19 June, 2011 - 22:13
Ooh, the Angela/Eddie game is a great idea. I'd love to see something like that. As much as I love Maria, I think their stories would be more interesting than hers (though I'm hoping Born From a Wish comes with the HD collection). Did you hear that James is getting a new VA for the update? Apparently Konami have stiffed Guy Cihi on royalties, and they haven't re-hired him so that they don't have to pay him more lol. It sucks, but apparently the same thing happened with Lisa's VA too.

Tsuchinoko posted on 19 June, 2011 - 22:40
Yeah, technically Maria is already part of James's story anyway. I haven't had the chance to play Born From a Wish but I've watched it on YouTube. James is getting a new VA? Gah, it bugs me when they do that.

I ADORE this. So well done, and your make-up is just brilliant!

Tsuchinoko posted on 26 August, 2011 - 15:41
@Pandora - lol Thanks. Yeah the shots outside Barclays were pretty funny, he really wasn't meant to be looking suspicious! XD @NakedSalad - Awww, thanks so much! I don't think anyone actually recognised who I was meant to be at Aya (and the friends I went with haven't played the games so don't really know him) so I'm really happy that you like it ^_^ And I actually thought that I overdid the make-up a bit (was trying to make my eyebrows look lighter) so I'm glad you think that it looks okay. I'll probably put a bit less on next time, though.

Relion posted on 26 August, 2011 - 22:38
Awesome! You should totally do some kind of toilet photo like in the game :')

Quinzel posted on 26 August, 2011 - 23:34
:D Looking pretty damn awesome! Love the pipe too (and can't believe it's just kitchen foil tubes haha). So glad that you found someone to do the jacket the way that you wanted - really can't wait to see it and you at Expo :D.

Tsuchinoko posted on 27 August, 2011 - 20:08
@Relion - Haha, yes I had thought about that but totally forgot about it at the con - gotta love poking fun at the toilet scene XDDD http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-WyJXD1Kbo The cosplay should be properly complete by Expo so I'll try to do some proper scene re-enactments then and get better photos. I should probably go and stare at a mirror in a spaced-out way as well XD @Quinzel - Thanks ^_^ Yes, I'm really looking forward to our shoot at the Expo. I hope that we can recruit some SH monsters to join us, too.

Quinzel posted on 28 August, 2011 - 00:37
Yay! I remember you mentioning creating a thread about it after Aya...should we? Would be a cool way to recruit people :D.

The new jacket looks great ^_^. So glad you finally got it done the way you wanted. *getting excited for Expo now* I don't know anyone who can help with photos on the Friday but if you know someone who can hold a camera I'll probably be bringing my DSLR along so we can use that. Or alternatively, there seems to be quite a few people offering photoshoots in the photography section; might be worth asking ^_^;.

Tsuchinoko posted on 24 October, 2011 - 23:15
Yeah, I have a DSLR also but unfortunately the friend who normally helps me take pictures won't be arriving until the Saturday and might be busy on the Sunday. I know a photographer who would be around on the Sunday but am just waiting to hear back about if he can do our specific time for us. That's an idea, I'll take a look at the photography forum.

Quinzel posted on 31 October, 2011 - 14:45

Tsuchinoko posted on 1 November, 2011 - 23:51
Thanks so much! =3 I really enjoyed cosplaying as James, I'm looking forward to doing more photoshoots with him. lol Yeah, there weren't any banks at the venue for the Expo so he didn't end up looking like " random-riot-person-with-a-steel-pipe " this time XDDD

Progress Journal

Jacket Sorted! =D

I finally have a fully finished jacket!
( well I will once it arrives in the post which should be next-day delivery ) =P

I commissioned it from Shido of Paper Cranes Cosplay who kindly took into account all the problems that my first jacket had and re-made it so much better for me ^^

I'm so happy that I was able to find someone who could machine-embroider the patches and at a reasonable price ( since the quote I got from an embroidery company would have asked for over £80 just for 4 different patch designs... X_x ) I was also really lucky that I happened to find out by chance exactly what the text was on his blue and red badges just before the commission. I had already tried really hard to find proper reference pictures and was going to have to settle on just using the vague shapes that I could make out from his character model, but fortunately I found references when I wasn't really looking for them and so was able to make mock-ups of them in Photoshop so that I could have them made accurately ^^

Shido also gave me the functional pockets I wanted as well as the shoulder details and even gave the seams around the cuffs and mid-chest that elastic look. I can't wait for our photoshoots now. I might have found someone who can help us on the Sunday, but I'm still trying to find someone who can help us with Friday's photoshoot.

( and in reference to the previous journal entry it is the second wig I will be using, which is the same one I used for my AyaCon trial-run pictures )

6th June 2011

WIP Test Shots

I did some quick test shots so that I could see what it looks like so far. I really need to find some material in the same colour as the jacket so that I can add the shoulder details, extra section of the jacket lapels and the breast pocket ( they didn't make the top pocket functional like I had requested and they had agreed to - I wanted to stick a torch in it... >_< ). So far I've looked in John Lewis both locally and when I went to May's Expo in the Oxford Street store and haven't been able to find the same shade of green. I've since found the address for a local army surplus store, so I'll try there next and if I still have no luck will probably try a really good fabric store I know in Brummy. At least they did make the bottom pockets functional so I will be able to put my radio in there and have it hiss static now and then... =P

Also, when I was looking for a better wig for Zero I actually found another wig which was a better colour for James. It also looks a bit more natural since it has a few different shades mixed into it. So I've ordered one since it's hard to find wigs in James' style and colour and if I think it looks good enough then I will use that one instead of the one that I have in the test shots.

20th May 2011

Bought Radio

I found a hand-held radio in John Lewis which would be great to have as a prop. Obviously it's not identical to the one in the game but it's a very typical-looking radio without any kind of digital display and has an antenna I can pull up so it would be great for Silent Hill ^_^

My jacket arrived a while ago and it's the perfect colour and fits very nicely but they completely missed out the shoulder details and got other parts of the design wrong, too. If I can find some material in the same shade I will have to see if it's possible for me to modify it...

30th April 2011

Got American Flag Badge

I got the American flag badge in the post today, which I ordered online and cost just £1.99 including postage =D

It's also been 2 weeks since I ordered the jacket so I'm hoping that I'll be notified sometime in the next few days about it being shipped...

16th April 2011

Commissioned Jacket

Since I shouldn't be attending any more cosplay events between now and May's Expo I've now been able to pay out to have the jacket commissioned. So that I could get an idea of a material and colour I'd be happy with I actually looked at Hetalia England cosplays and when I found one I liked requested that James' jacket be made from the same type of material and in the same colour. I also asked for the pockets to be functional ( since I might get a torch to put in the top one ) and I'm going to either get the badges made seperately or try to make them myself ( since I've noticed that the finer details in commissioned costumes aren't always that good ). As far as I can tell from the making and shipping times it SHOULD arrive in time... I've asked for 20th May as the delivery deadline.

25th March 2011

Binder Arrived

Yeah, I thought that I really couldn't get away with this cosplay without using a binder since it has the open jacket, so I finally got around to getting one. Obviously I can't get it absolutely 100% flat but it's effective enough for me to be happy with it and it looks okay under my polo shirts ^_^

Once KitaCon is out of the way I should be able to put my money towards getting the jacket and badges.

9th March 2011

Sourced and Bought Grey Polo Shirts / Wig Arrived

When up town I looked around just about every shop I could think of that would sell grey polo shirts but they always had some kind of logo or other colour included on them >,< Luckily I did manage to find what I was looking for in the very last place I could think of. They actually had 2 which were suitable. One is perfect in colour, but I also found one which is a little bit darker but has subtle thin stripes on which give it the look of that slightly ribbed texture that James' shirt has. I'm not sure which one is best so considering they were tricky to find I decided to buy both of them just in case.

Also when I got home from town I found that my wig had arrived.
It's a little bit on the light side so I might colour it in a slightly warmer shade.

19th February 2011

Sourced and Ordered Wig

Even though his hairstyle is fairly simple I found it really tricky to find a wig that was in the correct style and colour. I have found one in the end which I think is suitable, though like with my Kyo Sohma wig it's originally meant to be for a blonde character when it doesn't look that colour at all XD It's more of a light brown which I think is a pretty close match to the shade James has, and it also has the correct type of parting. All it will need is a tiny bit of trimming at the back and sides ^_^

I've also found places I could get an Amercian flag badge from, but I will leave that until after I have the jacket ready to sew it onto so that I know what size of badge I need to get.
