Roxas (Twilight Town) - Kingdom Hearts II

London MCM Expo Oct 2009

Judges Choice Award for Accuracy and Attention to Detail, Saturday Masquerade at London MCM Expo October 2009

Seeing as how I had so much fun cosplaying as Org!Roxas, I decided to make Twilight Town Roxie for October MCM Expo '09! I'd class this as my first big project... The coat was commisioned and the PJs were only very simple - T-shirt and shorts. This is the first costume I've made that took a loooot of work ^^; It may not look it, as it looks simple and is a very over-cosplayed costume... But I really put my heart and soul into it!!

The wig is styled from an Angela750 in colour LG26 from cosworx. A DELICIOUS yellowy blonde, with various colour strands mixed in to give the colour lots of depth :3 I definately reccomend it for those who want a golden/yellowy/strawberry blonde. (P.S. Don't get 144!! xD *discussed this in the info for the Org!Roxas cosplay).

The vest is fully lined, with accurate piping and ribbed material. Black cotton was easy enough to find, but I couldn't get the right shade of grey anywhere :O Same for the corderoy, so those are both hand-dyed. The zipper was in a bargin bag from Abakhan xD And the zipper pull is made from a thick-ish rubber sheet that my papa got me from work, cut out with a stanly knife and spraypainted silver with a nailvarnish coating.

The jacket is also fully lined, with accurate piping. I wanted to make it from white denim, but couldn't find any anywhere so I went for drill. A totally good choice, the fabric is lovely - heavy-ish but not really thick :D! It's lined in black cotton, with red cotton for the collar. I was going to use a red velvet, but I was n00bish to the difficulties of sewing velvet - not good for tiny fiddly details!! >.< It was a nicer, deeper red too... ahh wellz xD I did the stripes by making my own pattern, and stitching the seperate segments of red cotton together. The zipper was also from the bargin bag, and the checkers are individually cut from leftover fabric from the shoes ^^

I wanted to try my hardest to get this accurate, so I heavily modified both of these tops from an existing pattern. The vest was moderately modified, but the jacket is like a completely different pattern xD It's all in seperate panels, because I wanted the piping. The sleeves were one of the most awkward parts of this entire costume, most likely because I'd modified the pattern so heavily. Thats a big gripe for me - they're a little funky cause I had to make them fit whilst keeping the accurate piping :/ The black "cuffs" were made by lengthening the lining, folding it over the drill and ironing it on with webbing (Y)

Being my first proper costume, I decided I didn't have the skillz yet to put in a trouser zipper xD So the black part of the trousers are mens ASDA jeans (Y) The beige part is made from linen, using my own pattern. Sewing in the double hem was a total BITCH Dx I had a proper war with my sewing machine and pants... At first I used silver cover-buttons for the studs, but then realised they were dangally xD So I replaced them with poppers... You know those popper studs you have on anoraks and such? Well, with the help of papa I hammered the top ones into the corners. The cuffs are turned up with webbing.

The shoes... THE SHOOOOES D8!!!!!!!! On my crazy bid for accuracy, I decided I must make the stupidly oversized Kingdom Hearts shoes. I bought a cheep pair of old slip on granny shoes to use as the base, then drew around them onto paper and sketched out the size and shape of Roxas's shoes. My papa then cut the shape out from this thick rubber he got from work - not what I used for the zipper pull, but srsly thick industrial stuff used on conveyor belts (yay for papa working in a factory! xD) - and using contact glue we stuck the shoes onto this base. We then carved the shoe shape from cusion foam, used in seat cusions etc, from abakhan (Y) and glued that on too. Using a light tissue paper, we worked out a pattern for the covering - black pleather. It's done in two parts - the sides, then the top. We did the sides first, then added the grey band out of grey pleather. I then made the tops - using the black pleather as a base, I added piping using white PVC. I then cut out the tongue and added white piping to that too. The red laces are actual red laces from Office xD Though I think binding would have been better as it freys less... I looped these around the buckles and sewed them to the underside of the tops. The buckles were awkward... They were full buckles, but we sawed out the middle bar using a hacksaw. Then there was one that had one side thinner than the rest xD You wouldn't have even been able to see it, but it irritated me so much we had to get another one XD *OCD*. I then pulled the red laces through the buckles, checking the overlapping was correct, and we glued the tops on ^^!! Seriously, that glue is BITCHIN'LY awesome o_o

Now for the most difficult part of the entire cosplay - the wristband =_____= good grief, I made and remade this about 7 times. I wanted to make it like a proper sweatband, but I couldn't get the checkers to line up Dx And they kept turning out too small!! In the end, I sewed the checkers onto interfacing, and weaved them inbetween to get them to line up properly xD It closes with a strip of velcro ^0^

Finally, I made the fingerbands using white and black t-shirt material to give it some strech ^^ The munny pouch was made from some orange suede-y fabric, left over piping and a toggle ninja'd from an unused fleece in the cubbord >:D! I drew the design on photoshop and ironed it to the pouch with transfer paper. I also have the blue crystal, but when out and about at expo I used a blue bouncyball instead as it is 100% less breakable xD!!

A lot of time, munny and work went into this costume, but I absolutely adore it. I loved how my mom really helped me with the wig, and me and dad totally bonded over the shoes xD I really tried my best to be accurate, so finding out I'd won Judges Choice Award for Accuracy and Attention to Detail was one of the most amazing feelings EVER xD
