Guide - Buying and Working with Wigs

Wefts

When you buy extensions, you get a pack of loose hair. You can sew or caulk it into wefts, make it into falls, and all sort of other things.

To lengthen a wig, sew in extensions as a layer – you’ll see that wigs are constructed like this anyway. Simply add on an extra layer at the bottom of the mesh. Similarly, adding wefts for other purposes works much the same way. Using a curved needle can be helpful.

This guide clearly illustrates the process of adding in wefts:

When adding extensions to the edges of wigs (usually to conceal any visible mesh when the wig is in an updo), attach the weft to the inside of the wig and bring the hair around from the underside, concealing the edge of the wig. You can alternatively almost sew in the extensions without making them into wefts:

Thread up a wide-eyed needle with extensions, and bring it in from the inside of the wig. Just above that point, put it through the wig again, creating a small, vertical stitch on the outside of the wig. Firmly holding the loose end of the extensions, take one side of the loop that the needle's on and pull that half of the extensions through, and balance both sides of the stitch so that it's centered on the length of the extension. Essentially you end up with the extension sewn in through the wig. Then bring the hair around from the underside, concealing the edge of the wig.

As an extreme, you can use wefts to create an entire wig from scratch, but in general altering existing wigs is much easier.
