FAIRIES. SOMETHING ABOUT FAIRIES.

Sat, 09 Aug 2008 18:31:01 GMT

On August 6th 2008 I, too, had the pleasure of getting my hands on the 6th Artemis Fowl book: The Time Paradox. Although I was pretty sure that the book was realised on the 7th (Amazon.co.uk agrees), but Waterstone’s said the book’s already on sale. How can any Eoin Colfer fan object to that? Immediate purchase.

Three years have passed… for everyone else. According to the information given Artemis (and Holly Short) may have been gone for this period, but they are back and haven’t really aged. I won’t go into detail mainly because some parts of this are confusing to me, but I wouldn’t expect less since I couldn’t keep up and finish reading The Lost Colony.

In any case, this really is one of the books that you just want to read and finish really quickly. In total, it must have taken me half a day. It was pretty good. After The Eternity Code I had started to doubt Colfer and his whole Artemis Fowl plot. As far as I’m concerned he just made up for it. However, although the book is really good and there were a lot of parts of it that I simply loved, there’s also a few that just shouldn’t have happened.

Summary
The story begins with Angelina Fowl being ill with unexplained symptoms. While Artemis Fowl Senior goes off to London to visit doctors, Artemis calls upon Holly Short and No 1 (a young demon warlock who seems to like humans, especially Artemis). Upon discovering that his mother’s illness is a fairy plague cured only by the brain fluids of the silky sifaka lemur of Madagascar, a species of which the last one Artemis sold to the Extinctionists when he was 10 years old, he asks Number One to send Holly and himself in the past. And that’s when things start to go astray… His younger self was much too obnoxious after all, but you better read the book on your own.

I would give it an 8.5/10. It can’t compete with The Eternity Code which is my favourite.

May Contain Spoilers/Read On Own Accord

I think the most random thing I read was that Foaly is now married. I really just gaped at the words. Thankfully, he is still his old self.

I don’t want to write any big spoilers for this book, but on the other hand there are so many things I want to say about it! Contradictions… ugh.

Number One is definitely a character that I want to see in the future if there are any books. He’s really too awesome. It makes want to read the last book as soon as possible (that won’t be soon enough though).
Another character that deserves more credit is none other than Mulch Diggums. He always pops up and he always has fairly important parts in the plot. In fact, in this one, if it weren’t for Mulch a lot of things would have failed. He is much smarter than I first though. In fact he realises that Artemis and Holly are from the future in a matter of seconds.

Opal Koboi! My first thought was NOT HER! WHY HER?
I had read The Opal Deception straight when the book came out. In the middle of my end-of-year exams at school. I put a whole day’s worth of studying aside for the book and felt utterly disappointed at the end, but never mind that.

Later in the plot I thought that it was a really interesting take. The time paradox kicked in and when you think, oh now it makes sense… the book ends and you can only wonder why Opal Koboi? in an entirely different manner. This is when Holly’s words make the best of quotes of the book: I knew this trip was missing a psychotic element. Truly one of the best lines!

Also, the UK cover art is pretty neat. And I want Artemis’ mobile phone.

So many things happen in this book that I made 5 pages of notes on the plot. I still feel a bit confused, but already questions for Colfer are coming. I most definitely need to attend the book signing and ask him!

I must go and have some ice-cream now. I’ve been reading for too many hours.

I wish I had the same excited feeling when I was reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
