Film fans
Are there any film fans out there? whether you like 80's turbo cheese action or indi films, lets have a chat!

whats your favourite film/actor/actress and why?

There's lots of actors I like, but two stand out for me:

Tilda Swinton: She's so distinctive, and always takes such unusal roles. She made a great Jadis in the Narnia films, and was the only thing I remember from Constantine.

Jim Broadbent: Always in a support role, but always does a good solid job whether thats in Indiana Jones, Hot Fuzz, Moulin Rouge, or even in The Crying Game where I first noticed him.

Both fantastic actors I must admit that I'm partial to Nicholas Cage meltdown films

Hard to pick particular favourites IMO. Plenty of people I enjoy watching, but never really thought about particular reasons I like some actors more then others.

Plenty of film crushes too TBH. One of the current ones being Jennifer Lawrence...

Because of that crush though, I picked up and watched the Silver Linings Playbook. Really enjoyed it as it was a romantic comedy that didn't fall into the regular rules of a Rom-Com which made it really stand out for me.

How about producers/directors?

I cannot get enough Paul Verhoeven! There's such a gleeful ignorance of restraint not found among his Hollywood contemporaries. For me the original Robocop, Total Recall and Starship Troopers films will always be monuments to excess - even when compared to the newer splatter or gorn films.

Edgar Wright is definitely a guy that I'm a fan of, Hot Fuzz has to be one of my favourite films out there, and I cant wait for his next film with Simon Pegg.

Agree with Edgar Wright. I like the Cornetto trilogy so far XD. And Scott Pilgrim is a great film (great soundtrack and score too!)

I think Scott Pilgrim tends to be somewhat under-rated, partly because so much of the jokes and references require so much gaming knowledge, and a fair bit of anime knowledge too.
(A friend of mine point out an Akira reference that I didn't realise when he watched it)

Its much more difficult to approach then other movies IMO.

I think its a perception thing. People not into those things thought the film would be inconprehensible without that knowledge (and the mainstream critics pushed that angle). When really I think its part of a problem with current Hollywood and TV.

Audiences have been spoon-fed for so long, that if something unusual isn't immediately explained to the audience, they cry out "Waaah! This makes no sense!" rather than trying to infer meaning from conext.

Well I'm a huge fan of comedies and superhero movies, so of course The Avengers is my favourite film right now.
I have to agree that Edgar Wright is amazing! Scott Pilgrim is such an awesome film and one that I could watch over and over again.

Yeah, I totally agree with you. people want explosions and pretty colours but aren't much bothered with good, original content.

You couldnt count the hearts i have for that film

Avengers was indeed awesome. Cant wait to see what Whedon does with the sequel. Hell, i'm looking forward to iron man 3 in a few weeks, see if it starts to set things up for the next film.

Its just as they are about the enter the Club where they fight Ramona's 4th ex. The words 'about to e-x-p-l-o-d-e' pop up on the screen.
This was a reference to some of the old Akira posters, which had 'Neo-Tokyo is about to E-X-P-L-O-D-E' on them.

I didn't realise it at the time, but then he had been watching anime far longer then me.

Helen Mirren is a fabulous actress. I love Johnny Depp too, his has an amazing physical charisma.

I did love Tom Hiddleston in the Avengers but that might be because he's quite pretty to look at!

I love so many films! It's hard to identify 'favourites'
Firstly I love everything ever created by Studio Ghibli even shorts, music videos, adverts etc, the lot, nothing has ever been poor quality from them! Also I love films by Miyazaki and Takahata from before they set up Studio Ghibli although I still have a couple to watch.

I like many other films such as Napoleon Dynamite, Edward Scissorhands, Flashdance (yes honestly) and Footloose (yep!), Akira, Paprika, 5 Centimeters Per Second, G.I.T.S, quite a few of the Disney films, also the Never-Ending Story, Labyrinth, Dark Crystal (please can someone tell me why we don't have films like this any more??), quite a few Pixar films are cool (yes I like childrens films a lot), The Dark Knight (blew my brains out with amazement), I like a lot of Christopher Nolan's films and also Tarrentino, Loved Rear Window, some serious films; Taxi Driver, A Beautiful Mind, American History X, This Is England, District 9, Requiem for a Dream, A Clockwork Orange and I like some not so serious things like Braindead and Larry Charles films! And I also like films that give me a strange mood like 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape?', Girl, Interrupted and Amelie
Ok I'll be quiet now about films, because I think I've said to much... also Star Wars and LOTR (not the hobbit that much though purely on a book-film comparison)

What is Napolean Dynamite about exactly?

I havent seen it, apart from all these references to a dance the lead guy does in the film

I don't know how to describe it O_O
It's a film about a very 'uncool' guy, but everyone in the film is kinda uncool in their own way (even the people that think they're cool) and it's about him becoming cool in his own way (without changing who he is because he's cool from the start). It's not really cheesy though, it's more funny and is toned down, but also a little 'out there' in a toned down kinda way.
It's 80's and it's just 'different' from conventional films, it doesn't try to do anything 'spectacular' it just tells one of those stories that is character driven but in a different way to other films...
The dance is the climax of the film, he just does a really cool dance.

Sorry if I made a mess of that, it's not an easy film to go into

That's alright, that gave me the gist of it actually
I'll have to put it on my rental list, have a look at it myself.

Of the 2, the first film is probably the superior title. It focuses on why Tony Stark becomes Iron Man, and why he wants to help people. It builds up his story and character pretty well, seeing him change from your typical playboy millionare to playboy millionaire superhero.

The sequal is a bit mixed. One the one side, you have the story pick up where the last film left off, seeing Tony Stark face the repurcussions of creating Iron Man. With varios nations/companies attempting to create their own versions of the Iron Man armour, and others who are able to recreate the power source of the suit itself.
On the other side, you see the sequal introducing a number of characters into the plot as they begin to set everything up for the Avengers movie, which IMO seemed to make the film feel a little bloated.
(Like in Spiderman 3, where Peter Parker not only has Sandman and a new Green Goblin to worry about, but you also had both the Symbiote Suit which leads to the creation of Venom, who he also had to face.
