Not sure if you guys think this story counts but this happened to me at the second con I went to. I was dressed as Italy from Hetalia. This girl came up to and wanted to hug me... I'm generally not the most "huggy" of people but alot of my friends are and I know alot of people at cons are so I don't mind too much so I said sure. What I wasn't aware of was that she was holding some knickers in her hand and instead of hugging me she shouted "Panty hug!" and literally shoved these knickers in my face then went off. I was pretty much left stood there thinking "What the fuck..." I hope they were clean, it all happened pretty quick but I remember being fairly annoyed about it at the time.

It definitely counts. Like you I'm not a really huggy person but I'm okay with it if someone asks nicely, so I'd have been pretty horrified if I'd been in your position.

This Loli blogger just summed it all up for me

...these are clothes, they do not talk and they certainly weren't asking for it!
I think this is the bottom line and we need to get this message across!!

I'm glad you guys said it counts. It may sound strange but it's one of those things where you feel like a line has been crossed but then you start to wonder if you're over-reacting.

I hope I haven't offended anyone by doing this but I made a petition and I'd like to ask if people would consider signing it?
https://www.change.org/petitions/mcmexpo-raise-awareness-of-appropriate-behaviours-at-expo-asking-for-consent#

I'd just like to bring up the issue and get some support for it! Thanks

Nice little petition, I feel I need to get on with these stickers!

30 Apr 2013 - 14:20101824
Thanks Andrew, please feel free to sign/share etc, I'm also gathering stories to sent in to MCM with person experiences of people so they know what has happened at the events!!

Also I've been talking to a lot of people on the MCM fb page and even the admins of that page, they're not 'against' it but they think we need a lot of people to sign for it to be taken seriously!

Stickers away!!!

Their apathy to it is almost as bad as encouraging it; the worst thing a good person can do is stand by and watch it unfold without getting involved.

I wonder if the Facebook page admins are MCM members of staff or not.

Still I'm going to email the convergence con and see if I can simply reuse their posters, for better or worse I can't draw or really design anything good for it

I've been trying to think of alternative ways to spread the word.

Might it be worth contacting some of the artists who are going to be part of the Comic Village to see if they'd display a poster, leaflet or something on their table? Some of them might even work the message into a print/poster/comic for their stall.

Also, do you think that Tokyo Toys would be interested in the campaign, as a supplier of costumes and accessories?

By the way, how does this look as a rough template to use when contacting people? It's not too wordy is it?

Quote:

Hi, my name is <name> and I'm part of a grassroots UK movement called Cosplay =/= Consent. We're trying to get the message out that wearing a costume is not giving consent to be touched or photographed inappropriately (such as being groped, "glomped", or photographers trying to take up-skirt pictures).

As you are a regular at <event>, and I enjoy your <work/comic/shop/delete as applicable>, I was wondering if you would be willing to display a sign or leaflet with the "Cosplay =/= Consent" name on it on your stall at <event>.

We are working on creating badges, stickers and similar items for distribution, but as we are a loose collective of like-minded people rather than an organisation, this is rather ad-hoc at the moment. If you would like to create something of your own, or would like to use the "Cosplay =/= Consent" name on a print or in a comic that would also be fine.

Thanks for your time, and if you have any thoughts, questions or opinions, we'd love to hear them!

I'd recommend the more general "Costumes are not consent" only because it is slightly more general, in a sense

Up to you if you want to contact them, I don't know any myself and will maybe canvass a few on the days but not going to worry too much about it this upcoming one (although I'm happy to share any stickers).

Actually that reads better than the thing with the not-equals sign, and is easier to understand for no maths people

I know a couple of artists who go to Expo regularly, so I'll send them some thing less formal. I was just chucking the idea out there in case anyone had friends they can ask.

This all looks great (imo) and it's worth a try at least!! Also I agree with the words (over the symbols)
Can you guys think of any ways I can try to promote the petition?

I'd email/contact the websites mentioned to see if they'd post something on it, as well as the related Facebook groups

I'm up for a cake sale!! We could get stickers, leaflets etc and give them out with cakes (use cake money to pay ourselves back for the printing).
And we kept posting the petition in the MCM group on fb and it kept getting deleted (like many other posts O_O I'm really not used to that at all after freely talking about what ever we want on here!!)
I've also messaged an admin on here to ask if they'd be happy posting it on the front page.
Anyone else I can ask to promote it???

We need more people doing this type of thing

Any chance of a version "Costumes are not consent"? as mentioned some people don't understand the maths symbol (and not all costumes are cosplay, depending on your definition). Looks nice though

03 May 2013 - 15:38101993
sure... easy enough to do in different styles and colours

Wow looks nice! I'm very tempted just get a run of stickers with that on if that's okay

If you wanted to design more styles or whatever, I think Moo or whatever can take a fair few, but please do not feel obliged since you did that on a whim

I remember at the first London MCM expo me and my friend went to we were walking through the crowds and I was ahead. I turned around and heard my friend yelling for me but I couldn't see her so I walked back to look and when I went to her she told me this guy asked for a hug, picked her up then walked away still holding her! I think he was trying to be jokey and put her down in the end but we were around 14 or 15 so it was an eye opener (needless to say we didn't hug anyone else that day!)

After hearing all about this I was worried about when I go to May expo since I'm going in a costume which shows my body more than any other costumes I have worn before. However lucky for me I'm going with three guys, one of them being 6' and the other prepared to look out for anyone acting inappropriately towards myself and any other cosplayer. (he would beat them up happily if anyone were to do anything dodgy or wrong) So for the expo we are gonna try and look out for anyone harassing anyone else and hopefully stop some idiots who don't know costumes don't give consent!
