The hilt from Dante's sword (DmC4)
I'm making Dante's sword Rebellion from cardboard.
Everything is fine till now but I'm stuck with the hilt (ribs, skull and handle)

I don't know how am I supposed to make it. Clay? Crack filler?

A friend of mine suggested using thick wires to shape the skull but I didn't really understand him well and I can't bother him anymore with my questions :/

Any ideas? Thanks

If you make it out of clay I would be tempted to use Milliput or any of the two part epoxy clays. There very durable and air dry (no no faffing about with cooking your piece like with fimo or sculpy.)

Bare in mind though if you made it soley out of clay it will be heavy so I would consider (like your friend mentioned) using a wood, wire or paper base and then build the milliput on to that. This method also helps keep the cost down

You could also see if you can see any skulls similar on eBay and build that into your design as these will often be made out of cheap or lightweight plastics. Or try poundland or 99p shop around halloween depending on when you want this ready by?

If your feeling more adventerous though you could sculpt it out of clay, create a mould then caste with resin. If you make a hollow mould this will help keep the hilt light.

Thanks for replying.
The problem is that I don't know how to build the base for the shape.
And I definitely didn't understand the wires and paper parts.
Is there a tutorial for those?

For a solid structure you can use pieces of sturdy wire where the design juts out. It's a bit random but this guy uses a similar technique for snout and ears on this werewolf costume: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3u6r4b9qRKQ
Once you have wire marking out your basic structure you can use foam covered over with mod roc or paper clay or something.
You could also try using a wire mesh (you know, like chicken wire?) to create create the shape you want and then papiér maché over it.
I would suggest if you use either of these methods you'll save yourself a whole bunch of work if you find a base. You want the handle connecting to the blade to be nice and sturdy since you'll be carrying it around and posing
Checking out pound shops, charity shops, cheap toy stores etc will hopefully yield toy swords and maybe even skulls that you can use to help! At the very least find a handle to build onto, remember anything you don't like can be cut away (if you find a sword with icky designs on) and moulded over. This way you can build the design around it and still have a robust structure.

Hope this helps in some way! I'm by no means an expert and have learnt what I know by experimentation

One way you could make Rebellions hilt is to make it out of expanding foam.

You start by cutting out the shapes you need with cardboard then spray it with the foam and cut out the shape. You then cover and finish it.

Here's a tutorial on expanding foam
tutorial 1

And here's a tutorial about covering it to give it a finish
tutorial 2

It might be hard to get the detailing in the skull so milliput or you could buy the plastic pellets that go soft with heat and mold that to shape to get the most out of the detail.
