He's actually modded an airsoft P90 and put back m7 working parts which won't be necessary for a prop gun but it's very intresting to see the process.

I think with the modding it's best to look at both guns and think realistically what would you rather do. Though since looking at the FAMAS properly it does already have curly front part and the correct grip I do agree it would be easier to mod. You won't need to worry about ripping handles from other guns and such. You could just use card even to cover that top box and then a dremel style multitool to sand the gap between the curly piece and the handgrip then bad the curly bit out with foam or card

Plus it's still a good sized replica I think go with the FAMAS. You could even get it to open correctly if you disasemble it, rip out all the internals and then cut it in half and glue all the lose top bits to the top part and bottom bits to bottom part respectively. I also think that would make for awesome photos reloading it in the unorthodox sideways manner - with this alone people will overlook the fact it's a FAMAS.
