I'm Claire and I would really love to know more about Cosplay and how to get into it. I have never done anything like it before, so I'm a complete newbie.

It seems that none of my chums are too enamoured with the idea of dressing up with me, so I've been trying to find any Cosplay groups in South East England. Maybe there are some like-minded people around here?

Anyway, I hope you'll be able to point me in the right direction and guide me in the world of Cosplay!

Thank you!

First of all, hey there and welcome to Cosplay Island ^_^

It's likely that you'll actually have to do a cosplay before a cosplay group accepts you. If you're in the South-East, will you be able to easily get to London? There are a lot of cosplayers here and what's more, in May there will be the London MCM Expo which is an event a lot of cosplayers attend.

Most of us meet other cosplayers at conventions or expos, so if you make a costume and bring it to the expo and you don't mind actually talking to people...you'll make tons of friends ^_^

Hello Clairchen, welcome to Cosplay Island.

..I'm sure there are cosplayers down your way. The best way to get into cosplay is to make a costume and go to an Expo. Even better if you make friends on cosplay forums like this first because then you can organise meeting up with others at the same Expo. This is harder than it sounds because Expo's have so many cosplayers walking around it's really hard to spot the people you planned to meet! ..unless you arrange a time and location.

So just pick the character you really want to go as, make the costume and whilst you are waiting for the Expo event start making friends on the various cosplay forums.
You can start by posting here your "Planned" costume, so people see what cosplays you are doing if they click on your name.
It might also be good to look for topics which your chosen character belongs to, eg cosplaying as Harly Quin? then look for a "Any Batman cosplayers going?" sort of topic.
Have a look at this list for the May Expo and you'll see what I mean..

Have fun, see you around..
