Photo Shoot Locations page
Before I get a wall of rage thrown at me I hasten to include that this is not a concept I came up with - but one that I have merely heard talked about by various people./One that I have not actively seen being fulfilled.

It's probably a big job and would be hard to confirm - aka this will have a lot of kinks that would need ironing out /cosplay pun intended/

But it might be nice to have a page for various places around the UK that show good photoshoot locations - directions, information, comments and photos, some of just the area and even some involving cosplayers who have shot there for a costume in the past.

It would allow people to find 'that perfect spot' for an upcoming shoot - bring more awareness of what is locally available and allow people to get some really nice photos.

Location suggestions thread here

OOh I suggested this! There's loads of awesome locations near here and I know there's a few cosplayers in the area who might not know about them so it'd be lovely to share. I would be up for running it as a thread on the forums but a page would be ideal.

This is a really good idea I think though, yes, liable to get a bit messy Still, I think it could be a great resource for both cosplayers and photographers.

An excellent idea ^_^

I think the best thing to include would be areas around recurring cons - I know Nert has done some location 'maps' for places like Amecon and Expo as well i think

Keeping these all together in one place would be very helpful =]

I think this is a good idea. I'm only a noob photographer - well, more of an anime fan with an SLR, but I'd like to get to know people who don't mind spending a few minutes to get some good pictures, because I always feel I have to rush so as not to take up too much of their time.

Generally the photos turn out less than satisfactory due to poor lighting or brick walls everywhere, so yeah this would be great in my opinion.

Anyway, you can do something like this via google maps. You can mark off places, save a map and share it, and if you have an android phone or such you can even call up the saved maps in the app itself.

I met with some friends earlier this year to do a K-ON! movie pilgrimage. We know eachother online through IRC and decided to meet up. We stayed in London for around 4 days and we attempted to visit all the locations seen in the movie, and it was mostly a success. None of us are cosplayers though, so we mostly did it to hang out and stuff, but since I like taking photos, I ended up trying to recreate as many scenes from the movie as possible.

This was before the movie was released, so we had to go on what limited information and screenshots were leaking out from Japan, since no one had seen the movie. Fortunately it worked out well and we visited most of the places.

Since then I have been yearning to do this pilgrimage again with some K-ON cosplayers to recreate the scenes and such. We had such a great time it's something every K-ON fan should do, but I'm 28 now, and for someone my age to try and round up 5 female cosplayers (which I've found the average age seems to be about 18), with no real photography credentials; it just seems creepy no matter how good my intentions are, or how you look at it

So I guess I'll have to give up on that idea, but at least I can make the locations available to everyone so I can still enjoy the photos.

Anyway, here's what I was talking about. This is a personal map I made for us guys so it included places of interest not included in the movie (I believe I used yellow markers for those). As you can see I divided it up into sections as we would tackle one area each day. There was still a bunch of stuff we didn't get to do since we had some lazy people who didn't get up until late (lol), and we spent waaay to much time at the Troubadour (K-ON cafe!) drinking tea...

Here are some of the photos/comparisons I made. It's incomplete because my friends were in a lot of the photos since we were jokingly recreating the scenes, and they aren't quite comfortable with being uploaded haha (power level hiding thing you see).

Oh, if there is interest, I might update the K-ON location map thing. If there are any fellow K-ON fans, there is an IRC channel we all idle in, so it might be good to talk there.

That's some serious research - I'm sure the spots would interest a lot of the K-On cosplayers =D

This is a really cute idea and yeah I'm sure I've heard it passed around before, although yes fairly massive to implement! We're going to need a lot of thought into how it can be displayed, searched and kept updated. I'd imagine as well as searching by geographical locations, it would be useful to have theme/setting tags as well. I.e. places that work well for sci-fi, fantasy, etc.

While the discussion continues here, does anyone want to start a thread to start gathering locations? It would be good to see if there's enough content to warrant something being developed, and also if we can implement the feature, it would give us content straight away

I can think of quite a few hidden things around London that I'd add to this already!

This is a great idea...there is little in the way of locations where I live, but other members may know places that I don't. I mainly use my local big park for photos but that only works for so many so I am up for this idea greatly ^_^

Suggestions thread here

This is an amazing idea. (on a side note those K-ON photos are amazing! You've really managed to find the exact places and angles etc)

I'd like to see something using the Google API as most of the stuff is there already such as searches etc, but yeah it would need a lot of thinking to get everything right.

It'd be nice to see photos taken in those locations as well (e.g. a two way link), would there be a possibility of maybe being able to link to a location from either the galleries or the individual photos on your profiles and vice versa?

30 Nov 2012 - 03:0094547
This is a great idea. I'm always on the look out for great locations. I can see why it would be a massive undertaking so I like the idea of the thread that has been set up for locations.

Agreed! It would be nice if you could have a box displaying photos that were taken within that location, perhaps when uploading the image being given the opportunity to 'tag' it within one of the set locations if possible - and if not the suggestion for them to add it to the list with some info?

Obviously there will be a lot of shots in people's back gardens, front living rooms and such which wont need tagging so maybe have it as an add on [something you click yourself] as opposed to having to fill it out/ or decline manually - to save time for those not interested in tagging a location?

/thus prevents slowing down the upload process

updated with one of mine... will have to get around to sorting out the other shoots i've done and remembering where i shot the damn things

This is brilliant and really useful! I've been helping plan out a London shoot in K-On! cosplays for a good few months now and I've just forwarded this link to the group as I'm sure they're very interested as well. Definitely going to have to try and source out these locations as well, especially once everyone's costumes are ready. Thank you so much for sharing!

30 Nov 2012 - 13:1694554
As a side note, I've just been reading through the locations already uploaded, and it might be worth noting the region (e.g. North West England, South Wales etc) the location is in? I know people have been listing towns/cities etc, but if you wanted to do a quick scout through the thread and didn't know where a particular location is, having to look up town after town through Google maps might get a bit tiring.

Just a thought

Ahh excellent. This is just the kind of thing I wanted to do, so I hope it goes well for you.

I did also write some detailed day by day plans about what way round we would visit each location, transport and stuff to save us doubling back on ourselves and wasting time. There must have been 10 pages or so haha. We didn't follow it exactly, but it might give you some ideas.

We gained quite a lot of information from this as how best to do it next time since we ran into a few problems and didn't appreciate how time consuming it all was.

We idle in an IRC chatroom, #k-on-game on Rizon (yeah, the team is making a game apparently, but we mostly just hang out and stuff now haha). You can get to it using a web client if you don't want to install anything by clicking here
http://client01.chat.mibbit.com/?channel=%23k-on-game&server=irc.rizon.net

I'm Zero1, and the other guys who I met up with are Gibby, Jazzu and MioAkiyama. Do drop by to ask any questions or just to have a chat about K-ON If you want help planning anything out, we would quite like to help out with that (we could do with planning out our next visit anyway). We tend to idle in the chat, so drop us a PM or mention our names and it should set off our triggers.

The four of us (five hopefully, since the one of our friends couldn't make it last time due to school) intend to do the K-ON London trip again this year, since Mio lives in California and Gibby lives in the Netherlands and we don't get to meet often. We also have waaay more information and screenshots than we did when we attempted it first time round. Before, we were trying to compose photos using 400 pixel off screen captures and what not. Who knows, maybe if everyone was cool with it, it could turn into a big K-ON meet.

Each of us has a pair of Mio's headphones as it happens (we all audiophiles in here haha), so we have props for Mio cosplayers There was also a lot of information floating around about other stuff used in the show, such as the tape recorder they made the album on is a real model, and so were the mobile phones they used etc. All of which are pretty old and should be easy/cheap to find on ebay or yahoo Japan.

The map really needs updating now we have all seen the movie. There were locations we heard about before the movie released such as Fortnum and Mason. They obviously bought tea and cakes there because I recognised the packaging and stuff, but at no time in the movie did I see them in the store, so although it was tea and cake heaven, it's something you could miss out if time is an issue.

Oh, I highly suggest you visit the Troubadour cafe (it's really really close to the Earl's Court Exhibition thingy where Hyper Japan was last weekend). It's not cheap, but come on, living the life of a Keion? That's worth any amount of money

Yeah, it would be really nice to share the experience with other fans

This is a great idea. Its something I came up with my self a few years ago and never got round to making but I'm sure loads of other people must of had it before I did wonder why its taken us till now as a community to actually start this off

Fabulous idea is fabulous! I'll add up some suggestions once I get photos working, lets hope the thread doesn't get filled up with people requesting rather than suggesting though.
