UK Cosplayers needed for university magazine. Simple questions to answer!
Hi there,

My name is Bee and I'm writing a feature on cosplaying for my university journalism project.

I was wondering if anyone would be able to speak to me about their cosplaying experiences. While I do cosplay myself, unfortunately I can't use myself as an interviewee!

If you could fill out these simple questions and post them below, that would be great!

Please could I also get your name, age and which part of the UK you're from?

When did you start cosplaying and what made you start?:
What was your first cosplay? Did you make the costume yourself?:
Do you cosplay in public?:
Have you been to any expos/conventions?:
If yes, which was/is your favourite to go to and why?:
Do you cosplay regularly? If yes, how regularly?:
What do people think of your cosplay?:
Who is your favourite character/person to cosplay as and why?:
Do you make the costumes yourself?:
How long does it take for you to construct a costume?:
What do you enjoy about cosplay?:

Thank you!

Happy to help, sounds interesting!

Chloe Lynch, 23, Midlands

When did you start cosplaying and what made you start?:
I first cosplayed to a tiny local con Halloween 2009, my friend had been doing it for a couple of years and convinced me I'd like it and I did!

What was your first cosplay? Did you make the costume yourself?:
it was Meryl from Metal Gear Solid, I put it together in a rush from bits I already had or borrowed. it was bloody awful! lol

Do you cosplay in public?:
well, to cons/expos etc. yeah and just once on a fancy dress night out with mates but that's it really, although it depends on the outrageousness of the costume.

Have you been to any expos/conventions?:
more and more each year! I'm always discovering new events through friends or ads at other cons.

If yes, which was/is your favourite to go to and why?:
oooh bugger! its a tie between kitacon and london mcm expo. if I really had to choose though it'd be kita for the parties in the evening!

Do you cosplay regularly? If yes, how regularly?:
I try to cosplay at least one costume to each of the cons/expos I go to, but as I'm a photographer I sometimes have to prioritise.

What do people think of your cosplay?:
depends on the person, my family and friends thinks I'm weird but that its harmless fun.

Who is your favourite character/person to cosplay as and why?:
hmm, I haven't really got a favourite character that I'd wear often. I have some costumes that I'm more proud of than others but each one has its own pros and cons.

Do you make the costumes yourself?:
I try to but I've got particularly zero sewing/craft skills so if something's beyond me I either commissions someone or buy it.

How long does it take for you to construct a costume?:
again, its depends what's involved and how intricate the costume is. generally it takes me around 2-3 weeks to put the majority of a costume together.

What do you enjoy about cosplay?:
the atmosphere, the people, the chance to wear something outrageous and different without being ridiculed. its a chance to meet like minded people while getting bolstering your confidence.

When did you start cosplaying and what made you start?:
I started in my 3rd year of uni, the first time expo I went to was in May 2008. Cuz it just looked fun to do, so I started doing it

What was your first cosplay? Did you make the costume yourself?:
I was cosplaying Nanao from Bleach. Yes I did it myself, cuz I was a poor student back then.

Do you cosplay in public?:
Only in expos and cons.

Have you been to any expos/conventions?:
Yes.

If yes, which was/is your favourite to go to and why?:
I dont really have a favourite one, cuz they all have their own pros and cons. MCM expo is big, easy to have a big group. But I do like Kita too, cuz during that weekend feels like I live in a different dimension, but the only thing about Kita is its location.

Do you cosplay regularly? If yes, how regularly?:
Yes, almost every expo and con that I go to.

What do people think of your cosplay?:
Some of them are ok, some of them just aren't. :o

Who is your favourite character/person to cosplay as and why?:
Erza Scarlet, a strong-minded ass-kicking female character with a clumsy side too. And I can also recycle the same wig, money saving

Do you make the costumes yourself?:
Yes, most of them. I only have one bought costume.

How long does it take for you to construct a costume?:
It depends on the costume.

What do you enjoy about cosplay?:
Cuz it's FUN to do. And I enjoy being asked for photos when I'm in the costume that I make. It feels like I've acknowledged for my cosplay.

here goes...

I'm Ian, 30, from Kent

When did you start cosplaying and what made you start?

Earlier this year for events, about 2 years ago for fun.

What was your first cosplay? Did you make the costume yourself?

10th Doctor (Doctor Who), pretty simple costume, blue pinstripe suit and tan overcoat, bought seperately and customised slightly to work better for the costume.

Do you cosplay in public?

Expos / Cons? sure

Have you been to any expos/conventions?

Yup

If yes, which was/is your favorite to go to and why?

MCM is always a favorite, it's close to me and a ton of fun.

Do you cosplay regularly? If yes, how regularly?

Three or four times a year, just for fun really.

What do people think of your cosplay?

Don't know really... guess they either think i'm crazy or eccentric... either works for me lol

Who is your favorite character/person to cosplay as and why?

I'd say my new one for May, Jareth, is going to be a longstanding favorite of mine. He's always been a favorite character, and i'm putting a lot of effort into the costume.

Do you make the costumes yourself?

Mostly I tend to buy parts from shops and then customize them myself from there.

How long does it take for you to construct a costume?:

Depends on how elaborate it is, and shipping times from whereever i can get the pieces i need from... Anywhere from a month to three months.

What do you enjoy about cosplay?

It's fun, a good laugh, and a brilliant way to chat and meet people who enjoy the same things i do

M

I need to start a file with my stock responses to these sorts of questions

My name is Pete I'm 38 and I'm from Norfolk.

When did you start cosplaying and what made you start?:
2010. I'd been interested before, but I was encouraged to get involved in a costuming group by my giorlfriend and her best friend

What was your first cosplay? Did you make the costume yourself?:
Belarus from Axis Power Hetalia. The majority was made by me, but I had help from my girlfriend, and my Mum did the sleeves, and helped with the top of the dress.

Do you cosplay in public?:
Yes. Cosplay seems pointless without an audience

Have you been to any expos/conventions?:
A few over the years. Mostly from before my cosplaying days though.

If yes, which was/is your favourite to go to and why?:
Aya con was a lot of fun, but it's been a while since I've been. The London Expo is my current favourite, but only because its the most accessible.

Do you cosplay regularly? If yes, how regularly?:
Only at Expos and when my local Waterstones has a manga night. I do other types of costuming though (like fancy dress, and going to goth events)

What do people think of your cosplay?:
Reaction tends to be good. I've not particularly skilled, but I've made a few people's days. Non-cosplaying friends and relatives seem impressed, but they've not seen the experts!

Who is your favourite character/person to cosplay as and why?:
I don't have a favourite. I like to make a new costume for each event. Too many characters, so little time!

Do you make the costumes yourself?:
Mostly. I adapt normal clothes where I can, but I'm not averse to making from scratch. I've only bought one costume (and it hasn't arrived yet )

How long does it take for you to construct a costume?:
A few weeks usually. More if I need to work outside (such as spray painting props)

What do you enjoy about cosplay?:
The sense of acheivement at having made something, the reaction from people, the group camaraderie, the attention , and meeting fellow fans of the characters/shows I cosplay.

edit: oops, forgot the personal details

Scarlett, 23, London.

When did you start cosplaying and what made you start?: 2006. I was into anime/video games/movies, etc. And a friend mentioned we should go to London Expo, and that people dressed up from things. So since we liked Death Note we all went as a mini group.

What was your first cosplay? Did you make the costume yourself?: Technically it was L from Death Note before Death Note became popular over here. I bought it all from Primark, but at least I had a wig.

Do you cosplay in public?: Only at conventions or if I'm somewhere public for photoshoots. I think any other reason seems a little awkward.

Have you been to any expos/conventions?: Yes, lots. (At least 3 a year since 2006)

If yes, which was/is your favourite to go to and why?: I love the Kitacon conventions since I think the hotel location is a very good place to hold a convention. Everyone is generally in one place, and so it is easy to find people and attend the events easily. Though all conventions have good points. Ayacon is another very fun convention to attend.

Do you cosplay regularly? If yes, how regularly?: I don't know what counts as a 'regular' amount of times to cosplay. I attend about 3-5 events a year and I generally try to cosplay to all of them?

What do people think of your cosplay?: I've never had anything bad said to me about cosplay. My family think I am learning some very good and useful skills since I have started offering commissions and can use the cosplays for costumes in plays and theater performances. People at work are generally encouraging and curious, so people seem to like it! I suppose because I tend to do more 'obscure' cosplays, I just look like I'm dressed fancy, and that gets people curious.

Who is your favourite character/person to cosplay as and why?: I recently cosplayed as Toph from Avatar: The Last Airbender and I had such a wonderful time. It was nice to be able to wear an outfit and not worry about getting it messy or dirty, and could just generally play and have fun. I can essentially behave like myself and everyone just tells me I'm being in character. The costume is very comfortable to wear, and the blind-eye contacts are a very good conversation starter, so I get to talk to a lot of people while in the cosplay.

Do you make the costumes yourself?: Yes. Again, because my choices are generally obscure or 'variations' of a character, its too hard to find an outfit for what I want to cosplay. Hence why I started sewing my own cosplays. Now I find it more fun to make something from scratch and be proud of the finished product.

How long does it take for you to construct a costume?: For an average outfit, about 3 weeks. If I'm working on a more complex outfit, it can be anything up to 2 months. My Pirate Prussia cosplay took 5 days.

What do you enjoy about cosplay?: It is an excuse to dress outside of the norm, showing a creative side you can't usually show so easily in comparison to people who are traditional artists. You can learn a variety of interesting skillsets from everything form sewing, embroidery, leatherwork, armour-crafting and prop-building. Plus it gets you to meet a myriad of wonderful other people who are into the same things as you, and widens your horizons to the type of people you can meet.

Hello! I'm Hannah, I'm 13, and I'm from the Isle of Wight

When did you start cosplaying and what made you start?:

I first started cosplaying in 2010. I started cosplaying because my online friends were doing it and I fancied giving it a go!

What was your first cosplay? Did you make the costume yourself?:

My first ever cosplay was Mikuru Asahina from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. I didn't make it, I bought it from TokyoToys on a whim. I didn't even wear a wig... it was terrible. But I really enjoyed myself, which was the main thing. If I hadn't, I doubt I'd still be cosplaying today!

Do you cosplay in public?:

Laughs awkwardly... yes, I do. In arranged groups, of course, but I do! My cosplay group and I have recently been to Blackgang Chine and Robin Hill in Homestuck cosplay. Of course, we ask for permission wherever we go several weeks/months beforehand, because we never want to disturb people. (Although I think Gina traumatised a little kid when she was dressed as Terezi and went to the toilet...)

Have you been to any expos/conventions?:

Yes! I've been to every London Expo since October 2010 and I've also been to ReCon in Southampton.

If yes, which was/is your favourite to go to and why?:

ReCon was comfortably small - 100 people tops - and really fun with its quizzes and competitions (and geekdom author guests at close proximity rather than being on a panel!), but for me nothing beats London Expo. I've attended five now and there are still areas of Expo I've never explored or heard of, still stuff I want to do, and I never get round to it!

It's a long journey up from the Isle of Wight, a ferry and then a train from Portsmouth, and we have to get up super early, especially if you're using facepaint. But it's well worth the travel and when we're there we never want to go home again! (Well, we do, but that's only because by then we're quite hungry and really fancy dinner sometime before midnight, haha.)

Do you cosplay regularly? If yes, how regularly?:

I cosplay any chance I get! Numerous "trial runs" with costumes, group meets and photoshoots, any convention I can get to without breaking the bank.

What do people think of your cosplay?:

Who is your favourite character/person to cosplay as and why?:

I really enjoyed cosplaying as Rose Lalonde from Homestuck. I'm currently putting together a couple of 'comfy' cosplays (Aradia Megido, Jane Crocker, Fionna the Human Girl) and I do prefer the simpler, comfier cosplays to the elaborate ones! Elaborate ones are GORGEOUS though, so I totally understand.

Do you make the costumes yourself?:

Depends on your definition of 'make'... I go to a lot of charity shops and modify what I can find, order items of clothing from eBay, sew random buttons onto anywhere I can find. Not quite the sewing queen I'd like to be, but you have to start somewhere.

How long does it take for you to construct a costume?:

Well, this time it depends on how much I've procrasinated on it. A simpler costume like the one I'm working on now - Jane Crocker from Homestuck - that's currently taken about a week to make, and that's just the wig-styling, glasses-scouting, and eyeing up potential clothes on Ebay. Handy hint - Poundland do cheapy reading glasses for £1 (obviously) that you can pop the lenses out of and use for just about anything!

What do you enjoy about cosplay?:

I enjoy that it's brought my friendship group closer, because we now have something to talk about that we all adore. It's a chance to be a huge kid - something that's kind of frowned down upon for anyone above like 8??? Where's the problem with letting your hair down, scrubbing your oversaturated makeup off and having a bit of fun? I enjoy that it's a chance to be someone else. People recognise you as cosplaying someone from their favourite series, or as their favourite character, and it's an opportunity to make new friends who you know aren't going to frown down on you for being a huge geek/nerd/whatever the phrase is now idk what they're calling us now??? But yes, cosplay is great, everyone should do it, the end.

Nicola, 21, Norfolk

When did you start cosplaying and what made you start?: I've always been surrounded with costumes, I can't possibly tell you when it changed from being just something children do to cosplay.

What was your first cosplay? Did you make the costume yourself?: If we use my first event, Waterstones ReCon, my first cosplay was Link and was a costume I altered.

Do you cosplay in public?: For birthdays, photoshoots and conventions. Also for any sort of charity things - dressed as Loz to sell cakes for Children In Need.

Have you been to any expos/conventions?: Yes, but not a lot. 8 so far, 10 including Waterstones stuff

If yes, which was/is your favourite to go to and why?: Kitacon has been my favourite, followed closely by Aya - nothing has ever gone wrong in those two, and I was with friends

Do you cosplay regularly? If yes, how regularly?: Weird question, imo. How do you mean by regularly? I cosplay at every event I go to.

What do people think of your cosplay?: My dad thinks it's a waste of time, I'm not entirely sure of my mum. Friends do it as well so eh.

Who is your favourite character/person to cosplay as and why?: Quina Quen, tbh. It was the most confortable costume I have ever worn and the only one I've not felt fat. Probably cause I was cosplaying a massive blob but hey!

Do you make the costumes yourself?: Yupyup! It's often easier and cheaper

How long does it take for you to construct a costume?: Depends on the costume. I can make a full lined suit in a week.

What do you enjoy about cosplay?: I enjoy being creative, though I can draw, I can paint, but I can't do that with friends, not properly. Cosplay allows me to hang out with friends, have a laugh and be creative, all at the same time :3

When did you start cosplaying and what made you start?
My first event was in 2008, my friend invited me to Midlands Expo after telling me about cosplay. I was always into anime and manga but had never looked into cosplaying before so I decided to give it ago.

What was your first cosplay? Did you make the costume yourself?
Kairi from KH2 - it was terrible - despite being bought! I had no sewing skills what so ever. I didn't even understand wigs. I assumed they were some crazy complicated device...

Do you cosplay in public?

I will for a shoot, but I generally stick to events.

Have you been to any expos/conventions?
To many.

If yes, which was/is your favourite to go to and why?
Ahh I think my favourite would have to be Kitacon because of how close everything is and the people. I do also love Amecon for it's amazing photoshoot locations. I'm really torn D;

Do you cosplay regularly? If yes, how regularly?
I attend as many events as my work allows me to so I've generally worn a costume at least once every 2-3 months.

What do people think of your cosplay?
That's a hard one to answer, if they're familiar with the series I hope that they will enjoy it, in terms of my family they used to find it odd, but now they see it as a useful investment. Especially in terms of commission work. My work and uni colleagues find the whole thing fascinating.

Who is your favourite character/person to cosplay as and why?
Mmmm again really hard, I cosplay characters I love so I love portraying all of them for different reasons, I like my infected Kite costume because it feels complete, comfy and colourful - despite the heat. I also love wearing characters like Ash and Sakura from StreetFighter because they're so simple and easy to move in - plus their characters are so energetic and fun to portray.

Do you make the costumes yourself?
I do now, I started out buying while teaching myself to sew, I now make everything so I can continue to learn new things and improve.

How long does it take for you to construct a costume?
I like to give myself a month [depending on the complexity] - but nowadays I sometimes only need a handful of days - my sakura was done short of two days for example.

What do you enjoy about cosplay?
The community, people, the creativity, the challenge and the fun.

Hi I'm Hannah, I'm 23 and from East Sussex

When did you start cosplaying and what made you start?:

2010. I went to my first London MCM Expo in 2009 and saw all the cosplayers, I have always loved fancy dress and this hobby looked like a lot of fun. I really wanted to join in and dress up like my favourite characters!

What was your first cosplay? Did you make the costume yourself?:

My first cosplay was Chii from Chobits, I made some of this costume from modified stuff I had around the house and made the rest from scratch...when I look back at it now I cringe XD

Do you cosplay in public?:

Now I only cosplay in public if I am at a convention, event or photoshoot and usually I will get changed at the event rather than travelling in costume. Though I have done this before and it was amusing to watch other passengers faces XD

Have you been to any expos/conventions?:

Yes, many. Through 2012 I have attended 9 conventions/events.

If yes, which was/is your favourite to go to and why?:

My favourite convention is Kitacon, because it was the first one I went to and holds a very special place in my heart. My favourtie expo style event is London MCM Expo because of the size and sheer number of cosplayers and like minded people

Do you cosplay regularly? If yes, how regularly?:

That depends on what counts as regularly. I cosplay to every event I attend (that's usually one a month throughout April to October), so to me that would count as regularly

What do people think of your cosplay?:

No-one I know or am related to has said anything to my face about thinking I'm weird etc so I would say people are pretty accepting of my hobby.

Who is your favourite character/person to cosplay as and why?:

This is a really hard question as all the characters I cosplay are very special to me in one way or another. I would have to say that right now it is Princess Peach (from Super Mario Bros) since I have wanted to be her ever since I was very little. Finally getting to cosplay her was for filling a childhood wish for me.

Do you make the costumes yourself?:

At the moment I tend to mix modifying existing pieces of clothing and making other parts of the costume from scratch. Though I do commission things that I feel I am not ready to make yet (ballgowns being an example here) or do not have time to make myself before an event deadline. I have also made some costumes completely from scratch (Zhen Ji for example.)

How long does it take for you to construct a costume?:

This depends entirely on how complex a costume is. Something simple can be put together in a few days, whereas something very complex can take a number of months of work to complete.

What do you enjoy about cosplay?:

The thing I enjoy most about cosplay is getting to be my favourite characters. Cosplay allows me to show my love for a particular show/character in a creative way. I like that every new costume presents a new challenge and teaches me new skills, that have been handy in real life more than a few times. Also the social side of cosplay is wonderful, it's a great way to meet people who like the same things as you

29 Nov 2012 - 10:4394529
Leanne / 22 / Midlands

When did you start cosplaying and what made you start?:
I first started cosplaying in 2006, when I went to a convention with some friends. They cosplayed, and I wanted to join in

What was your first cosplay? Did you make the costume yourself?:
My very first cosplay was Summoner Yuna, from Final Fantasy X. That one i didn't make myself, I brought from Ebay. But after that I started to make my own. The first one I made was Gunner Yuna from Final Fantasy X-2

Do you cosplay in public?:
Not really. I tend to keep it for conventions and Expos.

Have you been to any expos/conventions?:
Hell Yeah. I try to make it to at least 3 events each year! I would do more but it is an expensive hobby.

If yes, which was/is your favourite to go to and why?:
I'd have to say KItacon 3 was my favourite. It was my very first convention after attending years of expos. I had a great time, and I met my boyfriend there

Do you cosplay regularly? If yes, how regularly?:
As regularly as I attend events. But I'm always working on a project, and have lots of other ideas in mind all the time.

What do people think of your cosplay?:
Some of my very best friends are cosplayers. And everyone I've ever met through cosplay has been awesome, great to talk to and really good fun!

Who is your favourite character/person to cosplay as and why?:
I don't think I have a favourite person to cosplay, as I like to try out different characters. But the character I've had most fun cosplaying so far would be Judith from Tales of Vesperia. Getting to wear elf ears was great.

Do you make the costumes yourself?:
I do, as much as I can anyway. I do get help from my Aunt alot. And sometimes from friends. We all help each other out really.

How long does it take for you to construct a costume?:
It depends how complex the costume is. The longest I've ever taken is a few months. And the shortest is a couple of days.

What do you enjoy about cosplay?:

Now thats a toughie. I enjoy everything about cosplay. From the moment you get an inspiring idea of a character you'd like to cosplay to the moment you finish it and everything in between. The first enjoyable part for me is fabric shopping, as it usually involves a day out with friends. Actually making a cosplay is awesome, I love it. Being creative is something I've always enjoyed. Dont get me wrong though, it can be stressful when something doesn't turn out the way you wanted and you have to start again, but that's all part of the fun. Then, once you've finished and you get to wear the completed thing to an event is always a sense of achievement, and getting compliments on it is always nice too.
Cosplay to me, is more than just wearing a costume. Its the whole project from start to finish. But then again, if people want to buy costumes then thats fine too. As long as you have fun with it, thats all that counts

Please could I also get your name, age and which part of the UK you're from?
Rosemary Parrish, 27, Dorset

When did you start cosplaying and what made you start? I have been making cosplays to wear since I was a teenager, but only ever alone and for fun, or for things like Halloween. The last Expo (Oct 2012) was my first ever public cosplay at an event!
What was your first cosplay? Did you make the costume yourself? I couldn't even try to tell you the first thing I ever made, if I think back maybe Sally from Mightmare Before Christmas, which would have been over 10 years ago? I spent ages making it myself
Do you cosplay in public? Now I wouldn't think twice about it!
Have you been to any expos/conventions?: Only one so far!
If yes, which was/is your favourite to go to and why?: It was awesome, and I really want to go to more, it is truely addictive
Do you cosplay regularly? If yes, how regularly?: No, but I want to
What do people think of your cosplay?: I got SO MUCH praise for my cosplays and it is a compliment when people ask if they can commission me to make theirs, that is when I know I have done a good job
Who is your favourite character/person to cosplay as and why?: Loki from Avengers Assemble, he is such a popular character and everyone loves him, I feel like a rockstar when I wear that one!
Do you make the costumes yourself?: Always!
How long does it take for you to construct a costume?: It depends entirely on the costume, Loki took about 8 months, wheres Selene from Underworld took about a week....
What do you enjoy about cosplay?: The praise and attention, there's no point in cosplaying if you are shy. I love the feeling of someone asking for my picture or telling me I look amazing. Walking past crowds and having them whisper "wow" feels GOOD.

When did you start cosplaying and what made you start?:

2008 was when I got my first Cosplay, it was a friend who got me into it. She was just browing through different video's on Youtube and came accross a few Cosplay groups who do Skits and such. After that she had a look online to see if we have any Conventions or Expo's going on and she found the MCM Expo in London, so we bought Tickets and got all of our First Cosplays together.

What was your first cosplay? Did you make the costume yourself?:

My First Cosplay was L from Death Note, Fairly simple for my first Cosplay but he was my Favourite ever anime character at the time so thats why I chose him.
Well not alot of 'Making' was involved since it was simple enough, I just went shopping for a plain Shirt and some jeans and I bought the Wig off Ebay.

Do you cosplay in public?:

Yes I do!
I have taken most of my Cosplays out for a fun day (Usually for someones Birthday) and we would just go shopping and take loads of pictures.

Have you been to any expos/conventions?:

Yes, I have been to 4 and I plan on going to many more in the future.

I have been to:

London MCM Expo October 2008
London MCM Expo May 2009
Hyper Japan July 2011
London MCM Expo May 2012

If yes, which was/is your favourite to go to and why?:

I loved both MCM and Hyper Japan Events since they are both fairly different when it comes to size and such so its hard to pick.

Do you cosplay regularly? If yes, how regularly?:

I woulden't say Regularly, but I do go to a friends house every now and then for a Photoshoot.

What do people think of your cosplay?:

I think people like them? Haha, well I am recognised when I go to events and have had a fair few pictures taken by other people so I supose people do like them.

Who is your favourite character/person to cosplay as and why?:

Oooh I have loved every Character I have cosplayed, since they all hold differnt memories for me.

But I think my Serah Farron from Final Fantasy Cosplay is my favourite because it got quite a bit of attention when I went to May Expo this year, It was fun making the accesories and styling the wig etc. It was actually my first cosplay in which I had made most of the accesories, although I didn't MAKE the cosplay itself I did make most of the other stuff.

Do you make the costumes yourself?:

No, but I do modify my bought Cosplays. But I have decided that from now on I will make my Cosplays.

How long does it take for you to construct a costume?:

Well putting it all together, accesories, wig, outfit etc. It takes a few months, but thats because of money and I like to take time on choosing the perfect things for it.

What do you enjoy about cosplay?:

Ever since I was little I loved Dressing up but now I have the opportunity to dress up as my favourite characters and take them to places where there is a large community of people who share the same hobby!
Its great going along to events and seeing everyone else in Cosplay, but not just at events I also enjoy looking at people's cosplays online like sites like this one, its great seeing the creation process from a reference image to a fully complete and amazing cosplay!

Ellie, 21, Nottingham ^^

When did you start cosplaying and what made you start?:
I began cosplaying back in 2008. I first knew about it in 2002 when I had internet access from home and looked at my favourite games and anime. I came across loads of cosplay photos and wanted to give it a try but had to wait until I was in Sixth form where I began getting my own money.

What was your first cosplay? Did you make the costume yourself?:
Ranma Saotome from Ranma 1/2. Entirely hand made. Wasnt sure what to make of it at the time but looking back I wish I was as proud then as I am now. Was my first major sewing project.

Do you cosplay in public?:
I do with friends sometimes and I dont mind but I usually just stick to events.

Have you been to any expos/conventions?:
Amecon 2008, Midlands September 2008, Midlands 2009, Kitacon 2009, October 2009, Midlands 2010, Kitacon 2010, Midlands 2011, namsoc regional social 2011 Kitacon 2011, J-con 2011, Fushicon 2011, namsoc regional social 2012, Kitacon 2012, J-con 2012

If yes, which was/is your favourite to go to and why?:

Kitacon! Been to all of them and awesome things always happen ^^ Its the event I feel most at home too.

Do you cosplay regularly? If yes, how regularly?:
Every convention, and for the local manga nights.

What do people think of your cosplay?:
Parents are generally proud of what I do.

Who is your favourite character/person to cosplay as and why?:
Sailor Jupiter at the moment. There are still things Id lie to get back on but I feel so into it when I wear her. Yurippe is a close second for the same reasons ^^

Do you make the costumes yourself?:
Always do but I sometimes alter existing clothing ^^

How long does it take for you to construct a costume?:
Months usually due to laziness. I have a thing for making a bulk of it long before the event, then stuff happens that gets me busy or lazy for weeks and then I panic for like 2 weeks before the con lol.

What do you enjoy about cosplay?:
What I enjoy about it is that it is something I can take my time over and watch my progress grow over time. It keeps me busy when I feel like doing something productive and its something to talk about with friends. I have also met some amazing poeple through it and I am looking forward to see what lies next in the future ^^

When did you start cosplaying and what made you start?:
I started cosplaying in 2009/2010. The reason to me cosplaying was I loved anime and manga and I saw there were conventions and decided it would be a great hobbie and something good to look forward to.

What was your first cosplay? Did you make the costume yourself?:

My first Cosplay was Sekai Saionji from school days. I bought the costume. But Im not ashamed to say I bought it as my textile skills are not the best. But im looking to have a go at atleast making one cosplay in the future.

Do you cosplay in public?:

I have cosplayed in public as I went to cosplay meets etc you will get alot of stares, but you do what you love and dont take notice.

Have you been to any expos/conventions?:

Midlands MCM Expo 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013
J-con 2012 & 2013
London MCM Expo 2012

If yes, which was/is your favourite to go to and why?:

My favourite must be the J-con its a fun little convention you can talk dance and do alot of things that you can't do at larger expos.

Do you cosplay regularly? If yes, how regularly?:

Hmmm... I dont cosplay on a regular basis just at cosplay expos/conventions and the occassional photoshoot.

What do people think of your cosplay?:

Well to break down people.

Friends and family:

My parents were a little concerned at first as cosplay isnt something they would have heard of. but they saw how happy I was and supported me every step of the way. Telling me what looks good and what i need to improve on etc. but mainly they encourage me to do my best.

Public. Maybe get a few stares and comments, but havent been through anything really bad. People dont know what you doing so when you do photoshoot people will occassionally ask what you're doing.

Other cosplayers. Have had very positive feedback from them so its quite an enjoyable experience. I haven't had any horrible experience that I have heard from other cosplayers as of yet.

Who is your favourite character/person to cosplay as and why?:

Hmmmm I don't really have a favourite just yet. But the one I did enjoy doing was Asuna Yuuki (fairy dance vers)

It was an interesting costume there was lots of detail and it was quite easy to wear, as other costumes can be too much or its really heavy and uncomfortable.

Do you make the costumes yourself?:

I don't just yet but I am looking forward to doing it in teh future with a bit more experience

How long does it take for you to construct a costume?:

As I don't make it myself I would expect it to take maybe a month or maybe 2 or 3 as I would do it slowly.

What do you enjoy about cosplay?:

I enjoy the whole experience if cosplaying. The people you meet all the events, taking photos, having photos taken, dancing, and just having fun really.
