i know it's a cliché, but to be honest, I've found the best cosplays are where the person has a real love and interest for the character...

Think through the comics, movies, manga and shows you love and look for characters there that you can have fun with. Picking a character with the same physical attributes is a good step, but finding a character you really want to play and bring to life for a bit, that will make the costume that much more enjoyable for you, and it will come across while you're wearing it

It would be a good starting point to know what you actually like. I can think of plenty of anime characters that fit your attributes but that's no good if you have no love for the anime. Questions to ask yourself are:

* Which characters do I like and am going to have fun acting as?
* What is your skill level like? You might not want to go for a super complex costume if you're a novice at sewing, so maybe trying for something that could rationally be made from clothes that you have altered. I say might because I have seen on occasion people who are new to the hobby pull off complex stuff. Also what do you think you'd be able to make: are you better at clothing, armour, props, etc?
* Physical attributes can play a part. As a slender person I wouldn't ever pick a very muscular character, for example. But also remember you can alter your physical attributes to some extent, I mean plenty of people cosplay characters that are not their own gender for example.

If you really want help narrowing it down at least a list of series you like would be a good starting point!

Another good reason to put love for a character over physical matches is that when you cosplay, people will approach you for photos and maybe a chat. Particularly if they are a fan of the character/source.

If you pick something you love, this will increase your chances of having something in common with the people you meet. I've got a lot of friends I met through cosplaying from the same shows. And sometimes the character too - its always interesting to share tips, and discuss why you did things a certain way on a costume

Spiller might be an interesting cosplay to see, I don't think I've seen him done much and he's probably not that hard to make. When I pick my costumes its usually because I'm watching a series and get really excited about a particular character. Perhaps rewatching something you enjoy and seeing if there's a particular character you have that feeling about. If you're looking for small and male you can probably include quite a lot of shounen anime leads.

Yeah I thought it was a pretty nice idea but I don't think I could pull of the hair and I don't really want to wear a wig

Thank you for your advice

I like to pick characters I have a connection to and adore, or have a similar build to me. Luckily for me this means I get to be a lot of cool characters!

same here... i go with characters i can understand and enjoy...

The Doctor (10th), Walter Dornez, Alucard, Jareth... all extremely morally ambiguous characters who i can identify with... the fact i share the same body build and odd shaped cheekbones with them all is just a bonus lol

Not wanting to wear a wig is going to limit your choices quite a bit (particularly if you were looking at anime, manga and video games).

Not a problem for TV and movies though Have you been watching anything that caught your eye recently? Game of Thrones? The Avengers? Once Upon a Time? Twilight?

EDIT: Also ask your friends what they are going as. If they are doing a group, then you can focus on finding a character from that source. Otherwise The Anime Character Database has 454 matches to your description (More if your grow out your hair)

So what you're asking us to do is to do your thinking for you, and tailor it and cater it to your requests, just so you can cosplay.

If you're not passionate about the character, or the costume... why are you doing it?

Here's a link you should read:

You don't *have* to cosplay to attend. By sounds of it you don't seem to want to put as much effort in as we do, and to do it right you need to put a lot of effort in.

JaeXD isn't treating it like a secret club or anything, we're all actively trying to help here...

we're all just suggesting that you look for a character that you're interested in... the details you've given of your body type fit hundreds, if not thousands, of characters through movies, anime, tv shows and comics... we're just hoping that your preferences could narrow it down...

Why are you acting like cosplaying is some secret club and you have to obsess over a fictional character to obtain the right to wear it? It's weirdos like you that will go up to a girl wearing a green lantern costume and tell her to name you every single original lantern, the comic book issues he starred in and his mothers dead cousin.

Grow the fuck up.

All I asked is could you name some characters you can think of who fit a very loose profile, it's like asking, what comic book heroes wear hats. You just jumped the gun and digested it in such a weird manner. Obviously I wont cosplay something if I dont know who they are, I was just asking here since people have a lot more knowledge on characters I may have forgetten from childhood memories.

Careful Benjamin, that's quite hostile.

No, it's not a secret club however a little push in the right direction seems to be too much for you.

I personally don't criticise the costumes, because I couldn't care less once the choice is made. 999/1000 it's someone they love the costume or adore the character, the other 1/1000 seems to be you.

What comes from me is blunt, however I am nowhere near as sharp or flameful as some of the characters you'll meet if you carry on with that attitude. There's a lot of nice people here and none of them want to see you throw a tantrum.

You're welcome. But that was meant to come with an implied warning

As the other people in this thread have said, going on "who I look like" will give you a bewildering number of choices (and to the average cosplayer that isn't much of reduction from "every fictional character I know" ).

Focussing on a character you love (or love to hate), or a costume that catches your eye, will keep you going when making the costume, and provide an icebreaker when meeting people at events.

For what its worth I don't think you have to put a ton of effort in to make a great costume- very simple costumes can be very effective. But you do need to think about the character and why you've chosen them. It's very hard to list off characters based on a profile because there's just so many that could fit. If you're really stuck you wouldn't go far wrong by picking one of your favorite characters because they're probably your favorite for a reason. So no you don't have to take the hobby super seriously but the difference between someone who puts a little thought it and someone who doesn't really shows.

Not Jae's point at all. The point is is that people are suggesting things and you're just brushing it off. There are an uncountable amount of characters you could do, why don't you just do someone YOU like from a series YOU like? There are plenty of characters you could do, which require not much effort so why don't you LOOK THEM UP YOURSELF? Read through the manga, watch the anime, play the games, watch the live actions and make a list of the characters you like and think you can pull off.

What's your friend's plans? Can you do a group? Can you make that costume? Do you have the skills for that? Do you have the money?

There are LOADS of factors when choosing a character, and with such a broad thing to choose from how are we suppose to help quickly? You don't have a character type to help us, you don't even have a list of series! Do you like the silly characters, the serious ones? The fighters, the lovers? Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle, Bleach, Halo, Assassin's Creed?

You've come here with very little for us to work on, and expect us to slam down characters for you to do. That's really lazy.

What I suggest you do is go away and re-watch/play/read some media, and pick out characters you'd like to do. Then gather pictures (or during, if you're watching/reading manga online), and arrange your choices from ones you want to do most. Then, eliminate the characters that you don't feel you can pull off or are above your skill set (if you want to make them). Also take away the characters that aren't financially viable. If you're still stuck with who to do, come back and post them on here, and THEN we can help you properly.
