Stop sign - Shizuo Heiwajima - Durarara!!
I'm not sure what material to use for the pole. I've tried looking around for brooms, but the poles are a little too short, and I also thought of going to B&Q for metal/gas piping, but I'm not sure if you can spray paint that stuff, plus it's probably going to be a little too thin...

Do check out B&Q. In the drainage/plumbing section there are some really fat plastic pipes that generally come in 2m lengths so you can cut them down to what you want and will be light enough to carry around.

If this is for an event do check with their prop regulations, you might end up making it shorter than you'd like to keep it legal but it's the sign end that's the important bit anyway, right.

Oh yeah! Didn't think of plastic piping! That's perfect, thanks!
Am I able to spray paint the plastic piping with the appropriate spray paint, or will I have to hand paint it? I just want it to have a clean look, as it would on a real street pole you see.

You might want to run a bit of fine sandpaper over it to take off the shine and then prime it first but yeah spray paint should work fine.
