Hi everyone!

I was wondering if you'd be able to help me. I plan on cosplaying Captain America at Expo in a couple of weeks time and I'm a bit stumped as to how to make a shield. I'm not going for the well known circular one, more the kite shaped one that he had for the first half of the First Avenger film.

I have a lot of cardboard, I was thinking of cutting out a shield shape on there and reinforcing it with a few layers, but I was concerned at how easy it would be to paint, would it be better to put a newspaper layer on it and then paint it? It's my first time making a prop so any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm not really in a position to be buying/cutting wood due to budget and the fact I don't own a saw

Firstly, I'm cosplaying Avengers Cap on the saturday so would be awesome to get a photo together! YAY FOR CAPTAIN AMERICA!

Secondly I think it might be worth doing a coat of paper to get a smooth surface. I made mine using the same method as LARPers use. I got some foam called Plastazote (can give you a link to a shop that sells it) it's not hideously expensive and then it just makes it more 3D and is also padded for safety. It's super easy to cut (just need like a pen knife) then glue it/duct tape it to the cardboard and viola!

I can't really remember the film now. If it is like that, try eBay for basic wooden shields - or fancy dress shops. Lots of generic 'Knight' costumes have a similar shaped shield that could be modified.
