Just a quick question, I dunno if its been discussed on here before. But I was just wondering..
Do you guys have cosplays you would like to do, but feel like you're too old to pull the character off in a convincing manner?
The reason I ask is because I'd like to have a go at cosplaying Kairi from Kingdom Hearts 2 (The pink dress)But as I'm nearly 23, I'm a little worried that I'll look silly dressed as her because she looks really young.
Is it a problem for anyone else? Or am I just being paranoid?

Though then again, I still get ID constantly. If anything, I'm putting aside a list of people who I want to cosplay when I look more mature. If that ever happens.
I also think make-up, body language and expressions can make such a difference to how old you can appear. Looking through your photos (especially your Sheena <3), I honestly don't think you'd have a problem trying to look younger |

It may be because I'm lucky and babyfaced and sometimes I do sit and think - ok maybe that age difference is a bit much - but it's about having fun in costume and most characters are in their teens and nobody ever mines.
You could also put a reverse spin on it. How many people do you see cosplaying RE characters? When actually a lot of them are in their 30s. People never mind |

I'm told that I don't look my age but I definitely don't have the face or body to get away with cosplaying someone who looks about 10!
That said, unless you're aging unnaturally badly, at 23 you can pretty much cosplay whatever you want without having to worry about your own age. 23 isn't "old" by any stretch and I'm always bemused when people act like it is! If I took age into account there would be very few anime characters I could dress up as |

That isn't true. But I do know friends who do are my age and cosplay waaaaay out of their age ranges. Do whatever you want as long as it's not ****ing obscene or offensive to the eyes. Common sense could be used here, like when I say to myself "I'm almost thirty, I'm tall and my frame is muscular. I'm going to say that unless it's Sado Yasutora, there's no way I can cosplay a fifteen year old and make it look adorable." Some of you may be thinking "did he just call Chad 'adorable'?" And yes, yes I did. __________________ http://starchildcoffee.blogspot.com |

I choose to cancel my plans to cosplay as Tidus. At the time I was 37 to Tidus' 17 and felt that a good 20 years older wouldn't work. This is my own personal choice as I felt I don't look as young in the face as I once did. While the age of a character has never bothered me before I do try my best to look right for the part. That said I have cosplayed as characters who are much older than me. I have been able to use subtle aging make-up which helps the overall look. I think it really comes down to each cosplayers personal choice. |

All the characters & costumes that appeals to me are someone at least a decade younger then me. The only character I cosplayed who is the same age as me is Nanoha (Force version) |

| Odangochan Joined: 28 Jun 2007 Posts: 302 | It's really down to personal preference. Don't let someone else's opinion guide what YOU want to cosplay. Having said that, I've stopped cosplaying characters that are significantly younger than me because *I* just feel weird when I try. I'll be 30 in December and I pretty much look my age, but it's more to do with feeling comfortable in the character than worries that I'm old and haggard!
That said, I've noticed that the characters I'm attracted to in cosplay terms have changed as I get older too. Subconsciously, I'm now drawn to older, more muscular characters than when I started, when the cute characters were a much bigger draw. I feel a greater kinship with them As others have said, there are certain characters that age is a bonus for too. Characters like Ivy (Soul Calibur) and The Boss (Metal Gear Solid 3) are ones that I've always liked, but only now feel I really have the right look and bearing for - had I tried to cosplay people like that 10 years ago, I'd have felt a bit like a kid trying on my mum's clothes. Essentially, if YOU think you won't feel comfortable in the costume, you should probably reconsider it. You won't have as much fun. But if you really want to do it, go for it! There are always tricks with makeup you can use to make yourself seem younger or older. |
