Photographers and Filmers! Whats your gear?!
Hello everyone i was woundering what is your gear when going to cosplay events for either photography or filming?

Mine is
Canon 600D (New)
Canon 550D
Canon(Stock)18-55mm Lens
Canon 50mm 1.8 Lens

Microphone -
Superlux E421B

Rigs - (Only use these for filming)
Flycam Nano Dslr + Arm brace
Home Made Fig rig

Also what are your guys wish lists what you want to get for your camera or what your soon getting ?

My wishlist is -
Sigma 30mm F1.4 (Done)
Tascam DR-40 (Done)
Rode ntg-2 + deadcat (Done)

(I thought I'd point out i havent been to a cosplay yet Going to my first one in september *J-con* )

Well, I can give you my wish list...

For photography...
the Nikon D3000!

I had a go on one of these a little while back, and decided that I would do anything in my power to have one in my possession, as I really want to do a photography course next year (preferably cosplay photography).

For filming gear...
the iMac!

16GB RAM with 2 terabite hard drive - it could render
videos in seconds... *Adobe After Effects + Angels Singing*

and, of course, a bodyharness crane :]

... Unfortunately this is all a few K, and I'm still a student.
That's my wishlist anyway. :/

Also Just thought I'd say at the moment you can get the d3000 for £300 at argos ^^ Use that with a 50mm You will get some pretty awesome shots!

Also the photography course, I would reccomend going into media at college ^^ i just finished my first year,

That course sounds absolutely amazing - I'm going to have a talk with my parents about going into media it sounds awesome!

Anytime!, ahh , I only check argos for the odd half price lense ,
ahh the Canon EOS t3i? aka Canon 600d,

Its similar to my 550d *T2I* the only difference is that you have a pop out screen

To be honest if your ever going to do actual filming also with photography i would reccomend the t3i Due to the more megapixels and also it will have a mic input *really useful for video!* also with the screen it allows for you to see easiler at awkward angles ,

But its purely your choice!, When i was choosing my first camera i put about 1 month of research (when spending that kind of money make sure its something you like!) if you can go to a camera shop like jessops or something similar to test the feel of it

Also about the course, it was pretty awesome i enjoyed all of it, and i would really reccomend it

Out of curiousity are you going to any Con's soon?
* If you don't mind me asking of course*
Finally If you ever need advice on anything camera related, I'm not a expert but i like to help also if you want some 550D sample images just ask ^^

Thanks again for the advice! I will do a lot more reasearch, (considering it's going to take me a few months of work!) but I've been eyeing up the t3i
for a while now, and especially as I like to do tons of filming, it sounds pretty ideal to me!

Yep! I'll be going to the Southampton ReCon this September (nothing big like an expo; but I swear I will get to one someday! :'[ )

Anytime! The t3i will be a great investment and awesome! The filming on them is brilliant , my camera and gear is what got me most of my work, oh nice! Have you been to one before?

Okay, sounds good! My friend and I are currently arguing over which is better: the Nikon D5100 or Canon 600D; I'm pretty stuck with the t3i, but he's pretty adamant about the Nikon :/
Haha, ah, nope, I haven't been to one before... NONETHELESS! I'll be taking lots of photos and footage, and have the finished result up on YouTube >:]

Those videos were really good! Very professional And that's funny, I've only just found the right rendering settings too (I'm using Magix Xtreme Video Editor)
( I was wondering why the quality sucked to begin with xD )

I have a Pentax k-m. Pentax are great for using old lenses with so my lens kit is:
Asahi Takumar 40-80mm f2.4 (£12.50)
Tokina 28mm f2.8 (£35)
Helios 44-2 50mm f2 (£5.99)

Although I don't take many photos at cons cos I'm running around in costume half the time!

Would certainly recommend Canon over Nikon if video is your aim, but work with what you've got.

The 50mm beats it for sharpness and bokeh but it's a prime, so no surprise there! It's a gorgeous replacement for the kit lens, albeit noticeably heavier. Having 2.8 throughout is a godsend for indoor work - masquerades in particular - the convenient focal range is great for when you don't have time to mess with switching lenses, and for the video stuff it's perfect; wide angle and decent in low light.

Only complaint is it's a bit soft, and the distortion follows a less predictable/correctable pattern than the kit lens but overall I'm happy with it.

True, I Will most likely be getting that next ^^ , i brought my self the sigma 30mm 1.4 * needed a fast lens!*
It should be here this week and i cant wait to get it!!! ^^

I have more equipment that I use when shooting cosplay portraits but this is usually what I bring to cons

Wishlist:

Canon EOS 5D
Canon 16-35mm f/2.8
Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 (but I would settle for the f/4)

As for the Canon vs Nikon debate, it is on going and comes down to preference. If you have never used either then you have the luxury of choosing which system you prefer. People say that Canon is better at filming but the Nikon lenses are better made and more durable. There are pros and cons with both so go with what you like
I personally don't film and only use the Canon for photography. I love my camera and Canon has served me well. I just want slightly better lenses now and the big daddy which is the 5D but that will have to wait

I do, as I was lucky enough to pick up an authentic Pentax m42 adapter but my Tokina and my Takumar are actually K mount which is convenient! I have a couple of other lenses like a telephoto and a bellows set for macro but what I've mentioned above is my main out and about kit. As it's not convenient to carry around loads of lenses. My 40-80 has a lovely depth of field and does nicely for most things, and I have the 28 for group shots

Umm, depends what you want it for, tbh. Bear in mind the crop factor makes your lens longer anyway. I personally wouldn't bring a telephoto to a convention, the enhanced camera shake and extra weight would limit it's usefulness for masquerade (where it would be most useful) due to the low light, you'd have to pay a pretty penny for one with a wide enough aperture and therefore good optics to actually do the job. I dunno, I've just never had good results trying to use my telephoto indoors, and I've got a 135mm f2.5. I've not used mine at a masquerade simply cos I figured it wouldn't give good results. Maybe you should hire one and try it before deciding?

I'd second Maz, outside of a masquerade telephoto lenses don't see much use at cons, and the low light can be a problem for the less-than-your-soul models XD

I've borrowed a 24-70L before and had good results so I imagine a 24-105L would also be of the handy but largely 50mm gets me as close as I need and sits as wide as 1.8 rather than 4..

Cosplay photos switch a lot between nice portrait closeups to full length shots and wide group shots so having a good range in the wide end is often more useful than a longer one.

It depends what direction you take it in, 'course, and there's always room for new directions the rest of us aren't covering!

I'm specifically a photographer not a filmer, so this is all for static image equipment...

Canon 7D for high speed / action shots.

Canon 5D mk II for portrait and low light shots.

Lenses

50mm Prime Lens, F/1.4

50mm Prime F/1.2 (my baby lol)

17-55mm f/2.8

70-200mm f/2.8

Those are my major ones, i do have a full telephoto set, and a macro set, both of which are for enjoyment not work, but rarely get used sadly
