Pattern question
Hey folks, I have a quick query to run past ya

I'm using the same pattern for a top and then modifying it for a coat.....Its fairly form fitting up top.

I'm purchasing it tomorrow, so I do need feedback asap. Will using the same size work? Or will I have to cut two sizes? Does that mean I'll need to buy the pattern twice?

I usually have to cut an 8/10.

Help appreicated for this novice!

I'm new to this :3

You shouldn't have to.
If you make the item you bought the pattern for first, you can fold or retrace the pattern onto paper and adjust that way yourself without paying out twice for the same pattern.

I've got a single pattern that's being used for about 10 different items that I've just adjusted and it works fine, and I've only bought it again to replace the pattern as it gets older and starts ripping.

It does depend on what you intend it for.
Coats are worn over other clothes, so need to be bigger than a form fitting top. If you're using heavier weight fabrics you also need a bit more room for movement.

However, if you want this to be a coat that's worn like a top by itself for the look then cutting your usual size is fine.

I believe you want at least 4 inches bigger than your actual measurements for a comfortable coat over clothes, but make a mockup to be sure.

You could cut the larger size and trace it onto baking paper before trimming it down to the smaller size so you have both. Or if you're confident with alterations, just make your first item, remember which sides of the pattern pieces had the size variations on and adjust as required for your second item having seen how the first fits.

As mentioned above it can be fiddly, but you can also cut the larger size and fold the edges it over to the smaller size. Depends on the pattern shapes.

Instead of cutting the smaller size first for the top, why not just cut the bigger size out for the coat first instead?
