Hello from Surrey
Why hello there

I've been vaguely aware of the cosplay scene for quite some time but have never really got into it, for two reasons mostly; I often have ideas that are far too complex to put into practice for my skillset and I'd made the general assumption that if you didn't live in the US or Japan then frequent trips round the world would be required.

So it is with great joy that I discover there is a UK based community!

A quick check of google confirms what I feared, most of my ideas have been done to death, but perhaps if I can glean enough tips and hints from this community then I may well be able to tackle some of my more challenging ideas

Welcome ^^ I'm in Surrey too. What kind of stuff do you want to cosplay?

@Numta: How weird, we're both in Epsom! (Also both called Ben) You have some awesome cosplays, loving the FF ones and Jorah.

Hello both!

I'm from just outside Woking, funny how you both ended up realising you are just round the corner from each other now

Most of the ideas I had were fairly military based, I imagine most people cosplay things that interest them and since I have quite a lot of experience in that field it was only natural.

Things like the PMCs (1) (2) from Metal Gear Solid 4, but they've been done quite a lot and in reality all of the gear needed is bought.

I also thought about doing Link from the Zelda series, since I played them to death when I was younger and they first came out, but as a character he's a bit too clean cut for me. Partly because of the graphical limitations of the time and also due to the style of the games, generally being quite cutesy.

I'm currently toying with the idea of doing a far more gritty take on link and found this wallpapaer from a bit of googling that is much more in line with the approach I'd want to take.

Lastly in terms of probably a fairly simple thing to start with there is Sparrowhawk from Tales of Earth Sea (1) (2) - you may now have guessed where my handle came from

@Numta: Wow, how small does the world wanna be XD I've actually stalked her cosplays before. (In a non-creepy way, promise). What are you guys doing for October MCM?

@SparrowHawk: That sounds pretty sweet, I've cosplayed Link before when I was younger and I manage to get away with it now because I'm quite short. Though a sort of grizzly version would be really cool XD Maybe go with a sort of battle-worn Twilight Princess version, I'd say that's one of the less childlike ones.

@Sparrowhawk:
You don't really see many PMCs tbh but like you said most of it needs to be bought so it all depends on which you prefer more, the making or the wearing on that one.

That Link artwork is pretty awesome and i've never seen someone do Link in any way other than clean cut so I think that would be pretty refreshing to see =D

Also never seen someone cosplay Sparrowhawk either so that would be a pretty cool one to do and a good one to get your teeth into =D

@TheCakeIsGone:
It is indeed a small world! I'll tell her she had a stalker today after work lol =P October atm we are planning Commander Shepard and Tali from Mass Effect for the Sat then Cable from x-men for me and Princess Peach from Super Mario for her on the Sunday. We are also planning on taking our Mass Effect cosplays into the masquerade with a group on the sunday =D

How bout you?

Awww wow sounds awesome, big fan of ME, especially Tali =P Good luck with the masquerade! On Saturday I'm part of a Game of Thrones group, doing Tyrion. I'm very excited about this, we hopefully have a Cersei, Dany, Hound, Bronn and whoever else shows up. Then I'm doing Aang from Avatar on Sunday with a group who are the other 5 Gaang members.

@Isabela: Yeah, me and my friend did Sebastian and Isabela from DA2 this time last year and it took so long! Bioware cosplay is stupidly hard XD

@cakeisgone - I would say not so much hard as just time consuming! I was going to do femHawke, but thought Isabela would be easier. But once you start looking at the detail it is really isn't! This is my first cosplay though and I have to say I am learning alot from doing this.

How is your frien's Tali costume coming? That is one of my planned costumes for next year

Yeah its the details that get you, good luck with it though, it's looking great so far Really challenging for a first cosplay though! If you need any help feel free to message me as I know what a pain some bits of Isabela were when we made my friend's one.
