Dishonored - Corvo's Folding Sword
Hey there guys and gals, I'm having real trouble with a sword prop.
This below is what I'm trying to make:
http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120308210853/dishonoredvideogame/images/thumb/4/41/Corvo_s_sword_design.jpg/1000px-Corvo_s_sword_design.jpg

Easy right?,,,, no XP

The blade fits into the handle, through what ever mechanism, notice the angled line down the blade,, that is where it collapses to be able to fit in the handle.

I want to be able to flip it, or press a button and the blade pops out.
I've tried everything I can think of from springs to hinges and pivots but nothing seems to work.

Here is a video at about 2:15 he starts unfolding the blade,,, but it fades to black so you can't see how it works D=

If anyone has any ideas,, or any other pictures or information of how this sword might be physically possible please get in contact with me, many thanks

I know it unfurls, but maybe your best option would be to have it flick out rather than do that. You know, like umbrellas do.

The only other thing I can think of are hinges, but I wouldn't know how to lock them in to place once open and in the same movement.

I was sort of heading that way when I found an extending lightsaber in the toy section of a shop (Gotta love what toys are avaliable these days!! =D)

Hinges was my first idea, and as you say getting it to lock and unlock is a pain in the butt,, if not impossible =[

Thanks for your thoughts on this =3 I really appreciate it

How I'm going about it!
Sorry to revive a slightly older thread! But i too am creating Corvo's blade for my Corvo cosplay!

The way I was going about making it extend and recline is the similar way a desk draw slides in and out!

Draw slidey thing

As far as i can tell it will lock when it's extended and will only need a polite nudge to get to slide back into place!

I'm working on it along side the costume so i can let you know how it goes! XD

That looks like one of those designs that is based around making sure people don't see it from the other side!

From the diagram and the video, I can only assume the main body of the blade pivots at the crosspiece so it opens like a flick knife, but the tip of the blade is hinged (you can see a vertical line near the end of the blade) to flip open when the main black locks. Which means there is an ugly hinge mechanism on the side they never show you

If the tip was weighted and the hinge was able to lock open, you could use centrifugal force to open in with a flick (like a butterfly knife). But the weighting would make the sword a really bad design in real life!

dishonored corvos retractable blade
you could do it like a switch blade that hides in the handle i have the game and when he takes out the sword it goes up in the air and i swear the blade comes out of the handle and then locks in place. you could store it in the handle with a spring or something in the blade and then when you click a button on the handle the sthing swings out of a groove in the handle and then locks in place?
