Custom cosplay
Are there any rules I would need to know about if I wanted to make a custom character and cosplay it at an expo?

Hi, I cosplayed a Harry Potter OC for Manchester Expo just under a couple of weeks ago. I got asked for a few photos but not many. One thing to know about OCs is that unless your outfit is absolutely kick-ass, that people will be interested in even though they have no idea who it is, then you won't get much attention. If it's a character based on something, like Harry Potter, then it needs to be recognisable. But then again, don't just throw on a ninja headband and say you're from Naruto because people don't like that. If it's obvious that the cosplay has taken time and effort to produce, then people will be interested. However, if people ask who you're cosplaying, don't go into a huge story about them, just simply say "this is my OC" and if it's based on something, say "I'm cosplaying my OC based on _____". Then if they're interested in the background of your character you can go into detail. You don't want to bore people. It can be difficult to fix up an incredible OC, but if it's something like a warrior, then if your weapons look good, and you look as if you fit the part, then that's good. But try to avoid having natural hair if possible! I noticed that when doing my HP cosplay. I just wore extensions and styled my hair differently, but to anyone else that could have just been how I always wear my hair so it made me look lazy. Next time I'm going to get a wig even though it'll be styled the same way.
Hope this helped!
Hayu~

Yeah, essentially if you do an OC then don't expect to get a lot of photos, if any. You've gotta have a really interesting design for people to stop if they don't recognise.

However, don't like that stop you. There is nothing wrong with cosplaying and OC and cosplaying should be done for you anyway ^_^

In a short answer: No, you can cosplay whatever you like!
^^ But Hayu has given some really good advice there for if and when you do it; it's definitely true that the more interesting the character the more attention you'll get - this fact, however, doesn't act as a 'rule' about what you cosplay - you can certainly do an own character design and you can also do whichever one you like, regardless of how 'interesting' it'll seem to others. (:

Another thing to bear in mind is there are a lot of people who are dinosaurs like me who are totally out of touch and have zero idea who 90% of the characters from anything are. I'll pull someone up if their cosplay is interesting or impressive, regardless of recognising the source given there'd be very few conversations otherwise.

If you want to do an OC the only thing I'd say is it's best if you've made it yourself. Buying bits and cobbling them together to make an original character is kinda...weak really. But if it's your own design and all handmade it's awesome!

Thanx a lot for replying. I have finished my character and she isn’t 'very' interesting however I would still love to play her at some point.
I don't mind not having my picture taken (I am a bit shy anyway); I just cosplay because it makes me happy.
Thank you all for your great advice and statements. Will keep everything said in mind.
