What's the best way to make this coat?
I'm planning to create this character's costume to wear to a convention in February 2013 - (http://www.skulduggerypleasant.co.uk/_assets/images/chars/profile_tanith.jpg)

I'm currently trying to design her coat. What I need is a long brown coat to start with - possibly a ladies mac because something like leather will be harder to work with. However I plan to customize the coat by cutting away the front up to the first button and then sewing part of a lace-up leather tunic into place. In this way I'm hoping the coat will still cover me in the front whilst leaving a short train at the back. However, the lace-up tunic front of the coat may be difficult to get in and out of so I'm wondering if inserting a zip up the side of the tunic part would be worthwhile.

I'd really appreciate it if anybody could help me with this as I don't have a lot of experience with altering clothes and I'm completely new to cosplay. I did once make a straightjacket for Halloween (I put velcro on the ends of the arms so that I could break free of the jacket if I needed to) but this coat might be trickier.

Thanks for reading!

You could make it so it opens all the way up, but the top bit with the lacing detail are snap fastenered or velcroed shut instead.
