Prototype Alex Mercer Cosplay
Hey guys, last year i visited the Manchester MCM Expo with a few friends and it was my first expo of any kind and i loved it. My one regret was that i wasnt in costume. So this year ive decided to go as Alex Mercer from Prototype. Ive decided to do a WIP for you guys so i can get some feedback on what you seasoned cosplayers think. Pics coming soon!

First step was to copy the template from a piece of concept art onto the 6" x 2" sheet of MDF. I did this simply by putting a grid over the art then transferring it directly to the MDF. Great thing about this method is you dont have to be particularly good at art to get a good result.

Next step again is an easy one, just cut out the blade with a jigsaw, this can be tricky due to the sharp courners but take your time and it will turn out fine.

After this, i cut out the handle, this doenst have to be anything special as i will be covering this area at some point with tendrils and nastiness. More pics will be coming in the next few days when i start adding the infections too it.

if you're taking this to any cons or expo might want to check out the rules but looks cool anyway

Have this approved by one of the Expo staff before you go any further. Hardwood props generally aren't allowed as they can hurt someone.

At expo you'll have a lot of idiots swarming around you and accidentally catching someone in the face with that is gonna cause a bit of grief.

I would suggest contacting the staff (can be done on the expo forum) or building it out of rigid sheet foam.

Also there is a "journal" feature on your cosplays which allows you to upload pictures and entries so we can track your build without having to find this thread.

What Jae said...

Don't want you to go through all that hard work and find you wont be allowed to show it off!

Looks epic so far though!

thanks for the feedback guys and ive just read the expo weapon rules very carefully, and from what i can see as long as the edges are rounded off, it does comply with the regulations (see here http://www.londonexpo.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/MCMWeaponPropsRules.pdf) i have however sent them an email with pictures of the weapon, just to be on the safe side.

Yeah thats definetly your best bet, Nothing worse than working so hard on something to then not be allowed it!

Although I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns out - really looking great so far and Alex Mercer is a great character!

Great stuff, if you don't get a reply or are struggling with them then let us know and we'll see if we can point you to the right people.

I for one also eagerly anticipate an Alex Mercer :3
