Im planning to make an orange and yellow striped hoodie for a version of Azusa Nakano from K-On, but I cant find any fabric in the right colours/stripe widths/fabric type, so was thinking about buying or making a white hoodie then fabric painting the coloured stripes on.
So my first question is... is this a stupid idea? XD Ive never used fabric paint before, and Im not sure if it'd be alright to use for completely re-colouring a hoodie. If its not a stupid idea, anyone got any tips for general colouring, or more importantly, got any estimates on how much paint I'd need? Thaaaanks 8D xx

I'm assuming you mean this variation of Azusa? It's not a stupid idea and it could be done, though bear in mind that painting an entire hoodie will take quite a bit of paint. If you wanted to go with the idea, my advice would be to section off the hoodie with lines for the different block areas of colour. Start with the lighter colour (the yellow) then do the orange once that was dry. Do any detailing last. Last edited by TealSky (19 Apr 2012 - 20:55) |

Thanks for the tips, I didnt think about what order to paint in :0 I'd guessed it'd take a fair bit of paint... Any estimates of how much? Most of the paints Ive found online come in really small amounts (15-25ml), unless Im just being an idiot XD |

It would probably save some time and possibly money too, although I suppose it depends on if you can find the right colour dye, heh. ;; |

I'd advise buying a yellow hoodie if you can (or dye a white one as lovely person above me has suggested) and then paint the orange stripes. To keep the lines straight you can use masking tape, and make sure there is newspaper stuffed in the inside of the hoodie to make sure it doesn't bleed into the other side (hoodies are thick so it shouldn't)
You will need at least 2 or 3 pots of yellow fabric paint, if you have a nearby Hobbycraft they stock them, if you don't some online craft stores do it, such as Fred Aldous. Another thing you could use is a fabric paint spray, although I've never used those so can't give any advice XD EDIT: NERPNERP I just saw the white sleeves. No worries, you can get paint in white that's made for other coloured fabrics. It'll take a few layers but will do the job Last edited by Freyarule (21 Apr 2012 - 11:06) |
