I love steampunk! It's such a cool genre! This might be a good starting point:

*smiles* I might be able to help a little...?

PM me if you have questions etc. I love my Steampunk crew and winning the Entertainment category in the Masquerade on Sunday was brilliant ^_^

Where do you work that they have such cool theme ideas!?

Portobello Road market. It's where most of London's steampunk crowd go to buy their googles, plate armour, vintage clothing etc...

This.

It depends as to what kind of character you're going for as to what kind of accessories you'd have etc.

awesome thanks guys! I'm not going as a specific charater, so I might just pick up a few random accessories (goggles, broach etc) and stick them over a victorian/slightly Gothic outfit. Will that work?

Oh and I work for an online VW company! yay for craziness!

Yeah that'll work if it's one of those one-off kinda things. I'm sure it'll look great ^_^

ok going to use this pattern http://www.butterick.com/item/B4954.htm but the one on the right with the tighter skirt. not sure on fabrics yet, do you think this will work? (channeling my inner Mrs. Coutler and M.Curie!)

For fabrics I recommend natural and thicker fabrics. In victorian times they only had natural fibers so you need something that will reflect that.

A Cotton velvet would work nicely with that coat, or just turn up at a curtain shop and buy some lovely brocade stuff (That's what I did for Voldo, and it looks really good). Linen is also an option, but it creases really easily, so it's not good for travel (so won't last in a suitcase on the way to a con, unless you bring an iron).

I would stay away from satin/anything with too much of a sheen because they're very modern looking fabrics. Luckily though it's winter, so fabric shops will have all their winter coat fabrics in (I just had a lovely romp around fabric land last week. I Adore wool and tweed).

Guh, I just had a rant about fabrics. I think I'm obsessed.

I think not only will that work, but it'll look stunning! What Tab says is true, use only natural fibres, especially for that kind of dress.

I honestly can't wait to see it!
