Yesterday I was converting the spare room into a sewing room for myself, as I usually camp out on the dining table so that I can be somewhat social when sewing, and I got around to thinking that we see a lot of what we create when we get to cons, but we don't get to see where the magic happens.

So I propose that we share work stations!

Just post a pic (or more) or even a drawing of where your cosplays come to fruition.

I'll go first!


Voila! It's very clean at the moment but I don't imagine that it will stay that way for very long.
On the table we have my sewing machine (from my love of all things CLAMP I've named it Touya the Toyota)

Next to that I have my handy dandy bin as things tend to mount up on the tables or floor. I wish I could have gotten a photo of the mess in the next room from my migration, but the batteries ran out.

In the cupboard I've got my file of patterns, it's already heaving but at least I won't lose them all.

On the far end there's my mannequin which I affectionately call Albert (I have a habit of naming things. I have an Orchid called Henry) Who at the moment is wearing one of my current projects which is in progress.

I got this cool storage thingy from Smiths and I keep all my sewing bits in there. So thread spools, bobbins, needles. Unfortunately there's not enough room for the big spools on top and I like to keep my pretty Liberty pin cushion within reach. There's also some hand cream, hair tie and some figures to match my pretty poster for inspiration.

Oh, and a Mameshiba!

what a cool idea, when i have more usage on my interwebs ill snap a few shots. be warned though my area's a little messy to say the least, might clean up first. XD

Angel Tear: I really like your box (I have a similar one from Smiths which I use for make-up) and the liberty pin cushion reminds me that I really need to buy one.

My desk is unusually tidy right now cause I just had a major flat clear out. Most of the time, if it's not covered in material and craft stuff, it acts as a second wardrobe and is covered in clothes.



I use old perfume boxes to keep all my bits and pieces in but they're getting a bit messy so I might have to get something more like Angel Tear's.

You do not want to see teh state of my work space. XD

You may think you do, but you don't. My floor has a habit of becoming my bin, my laundry basket and my storage cupboard when I'm in the middle of a project.

@Angel Tear: YOU HAVE THE EXACT SAME SEWING MACHINE AS I DO 8D Ahhhhh I've never met another cosplayer that has the same one!!

My workplace is my Uni room, and back home home I took up the living room, and when at my shop I took up my bedroom. Either way I didn't have a specific workstation so the corner which I took up for sewing is a bombshell XD
When I tidy it's neat for all of a few hours and then it's a mess again. I don't think I can actually keep a space tidy for more than a day D:

At the moment in my Uni cosplay workstation it's in the corner on my desk and rabbit and Totoro things and circuit boards have started taking over the area as I haven't done cosplay work in ages... This is sad times XD
My wig head is kept on the shelf out the way. It has moved locations so many times as it just takes up precious room!

I think just reading my descriptions you can tell I'm a messy person... Maybe this is why my cosplays are so messy XD

@ puzzledpenguin Thank you so much! I usually have a tool box but everything always got tangled up in thread since I had to move it around for my course and it just ended up being impractical. It's got the bare essentials now and I'm a lot happier carrying it!

Yay!!! Sewing machine buddies! *booty-bump* I had it for my 15th(?) birthday and it's never let me down and make all of my costumes. I LOVE this machine and couldn't really see myself working with anything else....well, except maybe the industrial ones at uni. But Touya is my man for the job. I occasionally talk to him as well >.>

I remember when I had to do cosplay work in a small uni room. It was slightly depressing when as a result, everything was covered in threads or you couldn't lay out your fabric easily, so I would cut fabric out on the living room table at home when I visited at weekends. I really feel for you!

Sadly my room is small therefore my double bed and the rest of my furniture take up all the space so I don't have a cosplay making desk/work station =(
I set up my sewing machine on the kitchen table (much to my mum's annoyance at times) and when it's not in use it has to stay in the box. Cosplay supplies are either shoved in the small cupboard that the boiler lives in (not meant to put things in there shhh) or on top of my wardrobe. My wig head is hiding behind my TV lol

When I eventually get my own flat one day I hope to either have a spare room to work on cosplay in or if can only afford a one-bedroom place then a desk in a corner of the living room.

With my partner and myself squished into a single room, my workspace is the small gap between the TV and the bed, lol. My cutting table is the floor, same for my wig-styling area and planning area =p. All my fabric is shoved in the airing cupboard, and the two talior's dummies (Manny and Dave (Manny is female)) are in a cupboard ^_^' Just as well since they freak me out if I leave them up overnight ^_^'

Unfortunately, my floor is my cosplay space. That's the problem with having an apartment that consists of a bedroom and a hallway.

I use my desk with a few basic things such as a cutting mat and a sewing machine I don't have a lot of space .

Good thing about siblings moving out, SPARE ROOMS!!
I stole one and turned it into my cosplay den!! XD

Alyx - Your room is amazing!

Gosh I wish I had a cosplay workroom! Once I graduate (finally) and Zomboi and I move in together this shall be achieved by turning our (prospective) living room into room of sewing machines and mannequins. It will look like a cross between Mombi's castle in The Return to Oz and a vintage Chanel Atelier.

Atm I have my sewing machine set up at the end of my bed on a little turquoise cabinet-thingy that I found by the bins outside a flat that was being gutted in my old street last year before I had to drop out of uni and move home. It's stuffed full of sketchbooks and has miscellaneous rubbish underneath it (including a rainbow coloured glockenpiel, a star-shaped tambourine, a box of old x-mas decorations and some old wire office in/out trays). My dressmakers' dummy sits behind it by the radiator and I bring a little stool over from the corner of my room and sit in the dorrway to sew. My fabric collection spans the junk room, my mum's bathroom and every concievable space in my bedroom.

All hot glueing, painting and sculpting is done on trays on my bedroom floor; which is also where I cut fabric... so not ideal if you're working on multiple cosplays at once. I used to paint in my bed, but I got in trouble for that... mind you mum hasn't seen the paint I spilled on the cream carpet yet... oopsie... me and the vanish are going to be busy later...

I dye wigs on the plastic table in the garden where I set up with buckets, inks/rubbing alcohol and my polystyrene head (which is an array of interesting colours as a result). I also do gore FX in the garden (I used to do them in the shower at the flat, but that's not allowed at home) on the washing line.

Yaaaaaay~ Spent a few hours tidying mine up so here goes!



I pretty much have the upstairs hallway for my workstation, conveniently next to the bathroom as a fitting room due to it's large mirror and my cell right behind me so I can mount my stuff on my mannequin in between sewing. The mannequin is just a safe place to put my costume pieces as I just cba to fix the size

Clearly it shows my sewing machine, which I have been using for the past year. If you look around it it shows signs that it was the table for my old sewing machine which used to be my mother's when I was young and she worked at home. Yuuuup! Its one of these old machines that instead of gently humming when working on projects it was more of a epicly huge 'RAAAAWWWWHHHHHHH!!!!!!' and you would need to work fast but luckily with the little guy I can move it downstairs when I need more room or in a hurry and need a less cramped place to work in. The old one is in the attic but I prefer the smaller one as it has a actual variety of stitches, and not just the straight stitch. Also repairs and maintainance are much cheaper and easier



In the little drawers I have stuff like elastic, pins, needles, velcro, buckles, mini-travel sewing kit of cons and tons of other stuff that may be of good use for later on. In the Hello Kitty box I like to store different coloured threads in and I use it for a box to store even more stuff for sewing when I go to cons. There is also a little box that like to put stuff that cant quite fit in the drawers and of great importance, as well as stuff that like to go walkabouts (Im looking at you, seam ripper! ¬_¬) Next to that there is my sewing machine manual when it plays silly buggers, scrap fabric to play around with the tension and stiches and some paper to write notes or draw The old biscuit tin is used for loose threads and little scraps.

Next to the table there are some red boxes stacked, which I use to store fabric I will need later on in a project to save from looking in my overfilled fabric box in my room, as well as more scraps of fabric to test stitching...ect, patterns and references.

Hand stitching is usually done in either my room with my laptop on or downstairs so I can watch TV/anime DVDs or be sociable XD
