Can Body Paint be Cosplay?
Basically Im a body painter looking for SuperFans to be painted as their favourite characters?
But before I go around posting casting calls I wanted to know what you guys think before I start upsetting anyone?

So first off does Body Paint count as Cosplay and secondly should I be asking on Cosplay Island or is it Highly inappropriate???

To see my Cosplay/BodyPaints check out the link on my Profile. But be WARNED it does contain nudity!

OR check out my Deviant page as it already has an 18+ filter on the site: http://jonwilksbeyond.deviantart.com/

I don't know if it is cosplay if it's "just" body paint. You can't really wear it... or anything... if that makes sense.

Personally, I don't see it as offensive, cause it's a style of art which I think is really amazing.

I've seen your works on deviantART, you seem to regularly post your work in a group I'm an admin of XD (UK-cosplay)

I actually love your works, I think they're really amazing, creative and really realistic! Every time I see a thumbnail pop up I think wow, that's an amazing costume, and then am in even more shock to find that it's all body paint.

I personally don't think it's offensive at all as it's quite artistic. Asking for casting calls on CosplayIsland however I'm unsure about considering it's a 13+ website and your works are mainly for 18+. Unsure about this case!

I totally agree, the Cosplays I've seen here are Amazing!
Body Paint is just another form of cosplay, it doesn’t work for most costume designs and is purely for photoshoots

There's no real 'exact' definition of what perfect cosplaying is.. n_n I guess that providing it's counted as dressing up as different characters from movies or games, why the heck can't it be cosplay? 8D

Looking at your work, I've gotta say that I'd happily welcome you with open arms into the cosplaying sector regardless of what the definition is. I think they're fantastic. :3

As for rolecalling, might have to be careful.. Like above, there's a lot of younger people on this site, and obviously this kind of cosplay's a little more 'risky' and is aimed at older people, if you get what I'm saying. xD

Still, it's a fascinating concept and really pretty for me... Obviously I guess it depends how comfortable you are with the setup but to me it's certainly interesting and unique art. C:

Don't see why it shouldn't be considered cosplay, given its all about emulating a character using whatever materials are availiable. Your work looks truly amazing, although as others have said just a little caution maybe when it comes to younger members on this site.

Hey there! Just so you have the official response from us - as far as we're concerned a casting call for this is no different from a casting call for models for a photographer or any other type of make-up artist. So you are free to ask for willing models on the site, however yes please make sure that you state the 18+ nature of the projects!

It's such a grey area as to what is cosplay and what isn't, and you can argue about that until the end of time. As far as I'm concerned though, this is a very creative method, your work is really interesting and it can bring certain characters to life in a different way.

So yes, as long as you always include appropriate warnings and do not post 18+ content on the site (as we are open to anyone 13+) there's no official problem with your requests, and I wish you luck in finding models!

I certainly don't see it as being that far a step from a Mystique cosplay or even something like Midna, even the Asuka you've put up has accessories on their wrists and in their hair so yep, easily.

Heck there's a few cosplays around that consist of little more than a wig and an appropriate background, others have maybe added some ears and a tail..

I'm not mad on 'I'M CASUAL' costumes or whatacharactermightwearpossiblymaybe but that's more seeing it as lack of effort, painting the costume from scratch does not sound like it lacks there!

Like Kat says, as long as the photos uploaded here stay 13+ rated and the rest can be linked offsite, all's cool from my view.

The question I'm pondering now, is what other characters would suit this kind of art? XD
