I have yellow fabric that I bought. Im thinking that its too light for the character I want to do. I would like to make it a couple shades darker. But what color dye should I use for it? I dont want it too dark

I always use Dylon machine dye when I'm dyeing, but make sure how much fabric you have because if you have too much in the machine it does come out patchy. I used sunflower yellow on top of a light beige heavy cotton for Merry's waistcoat and you can see how it turned out. I also used it on white linen for China's trousers.

Dylon machine dye it looks to me you need either a sunshine yellow or a small amount of terracotta brown to make it darker.

I would weight the fabric and see how much you got, if you go for sunshine yellow follow the instructions on the packet.

If you use the terracotta brown what ever on the packet half the dye amount as you dont want to fully dye it brown... even quarter the quantity...
so it would come out slightly darker.

Both will need one 500g salt (I think)

3rd'd for Dylon machine Dye, looking at that colour I'd highly recommend the sunshine yellow, this is what colour it came out on a white Gi for my Cardboard Tube Samurai here

It's hard to tell from the photos - what fabric is it? Depending on what it's made of you need different methods to dye it.

If it's cotton then standard Dylon machine dyes would work fine I should imagine.

They have hand dyes too though =)

would using less then half of a hand dye work to tint it darker?

The colour quoted on the packet is on the assumption that you're using white fabric and using all of the packet for the recomended weight of fabric. Less dye = less strong colour, assumedly if you've already got coloured fabric and looking to tint it darker you'll need less dye. My advice would be to use maybe a quater of the dye at a time (with the appropriate amount of salt or as instructed) and possibly dye more than once in increments (with fresh batches of dye) until you reach the desired shade.

It's always hard to tell the final outcome of the colour when the fabric is wet afterall so you may have to wait for it to dry between dyes.

Dylon dyes are very vibrant. The brown is like chocolate. Try 1/8 brown to 7/8 yellow, do a test scrap and see how it looks.
