I need a little moral advice
I need to ask someones advice but i can't tell anyone.. but no one here knows me so i though ah! perfect

I recently started a temp job for while im at uni, its not where i wanted to go but i needed a job and it was the only place i got an interview :/ Anywhoo i have been there for nearly 2 months now and i really like the Boss and the staff ect. But the job is not exactly my cup of tea...
And then i got a superlate call back from THE DISNEY STORE offering me an interview.. so i arranged one :/
I have wanted to work there for years and as i want to be a photopass photographer at the disney parks, i could do with a foot in the door!
But i feel awful about it. My boss has taken the time to train me up and has been lovely to me, but in years of applying to The Disney Store i finally have in interview and i dont want to pass it up!

Also.. if im not a bad person for leaving my new job and i get the Disney job.. how to i tell my lovely boss?

If you definetly have a job at the Disney store and its what you want to do then hand in your notice

You can't go through life trying not to upset people because as they say nice guys always finish last! so you have to be ruthless and a bit selfish sometimes!

If you pass this up now you'll regret it later in life.
I'm sure your boss will understand if you're leaving to get a job which will aid in your future career goal, as they'll probably be expecting you to leave once you finish uni anyway.

To be honest, it's a job, not a social place. Treat it as a job and you'll soon know what to do, which is obviously leave for the Disney job if you get it offered to you.

Bosses are people too (even if it doesn't seem like it sometimes ), they'll be a bit annoyed that they'll have to find someone else but they won't hate you for it and if they do then screw them they're not worth bothering about then anyway.

I probably wouldn't say anything to them until you've definitely gotten the Disney job though.

You've got to think about numero uno, if you don't like the job you're in you'll get more and more fed up with it and you'll start to hate it and who wants to be a boss of someone like that so you're really doing your boss a favour leaving for a job you want to do

Don't burn any bridges, be nice if you do quit. Just tell them exactly what you've told us here, you think they're a great boss, and have been really lovely to you but you have a chance at this Disney job which is something you've wanted to do for years.

They'll understand. Don't worry about it.

But as I say, don't say anything about it until it's actually a problem as this is all speculative but I'm sure you'll get the job Good Luck!

Depending on how the store runs things, your current employer will be asked for references should you be considered past interview (if they haven't asked already!) so they will (most likely) find out before you've actually got the job, unfortunately!

I'm not sure what your current job is so only you can decide which will give you the more useful skills!

I'm sure someone else will be very grateful for the job you leave behind, so I wouldn't feel too bad about it!

Be honest. I know this sounds stupid, but it'll make things easier. Tell your boss exactly what you said here. that although you like working where you are and you love the people you work with, you've always aspired to work there and that the opportunity came up and that you really are torn about it but really want to give it a shot...Honesty pays...I'm a "boss" that's what I would like from my employees

24 Sep 2011 - 23:5670739
Yeah, just go for it! You shouldn't have to feel bad on their account! Like you said the Disney job is something you want to do, so there's no sense in you staying in your current job. You said about them training you up, and I can see your point, but if they're half decent they should at least respect for your decision.

Remember it is your career, so you should never hold yourself back. We all have to make sacrifices to achieve!

Do what makes you happy, tell your boss you are grateful for the opportunity and thank him for everything he has done, but just be honest and tell him you've found another job that you want to go for.

25 Sep 2011 - 11:1670746
If you think about it, it's only a temp job anyway so you're going to have to leave there eventually. What's the point in turning down your dream job? You said yourself that you've been applying there for years so if you're offered a job then take it.

25 Sep 2011 - 15:3470760
Be honest with your boss but go for the opportunity. You don't want to end up regretting it in the future if you don't even try.

I'm going to be a bit of a troll here.

Your boss is an adult

So are you.

Do you think he's/she's/it's actually gonna feel guilty if you've found the job you love?

No. Everyone wants that opportunity. And it seldom comes.

So stop feeling guilty and seize the opportunity.

Honestly- and if they want you so bad they' offer to pay you better.

Competitive markets for good staff are high and there will be someone better to replace you (sorry mean I know but it's a common truth)

Because you'll be replacing someone at Disney.

26 Sep 2011 - 14:1170857
I wouldn't start feeling guilty until you know you have the job. Otherwise you maybe putting yourself through a lot of worry for nothing (though I do hope you get it )

I can get why you feel guilty if it's a small business. I had the same problem 6 months ago. A small time cafe had finally given me a break and given me a job, then two/three months down the line, I was offered my ALT placement to leave in a month. If I took that, rather than going later, than I would save myself £1500 in set up fees that they would pay. I just had to explain the situation to the owner. She wasn't happy, but the first thing she did was congratulate me and say that if this was my dream, I should follow it.
People are often reasonable.

If it's a bigger business, I'll you what the job centre people told me 'they'll screw you over without a second thought, so don't worry about doing it to them.'
Usually it's not a mentality I like to take, but this is your dream.

JUST GO FOR IT!

Be honest with your boss, its not like you'll be leaving because of staff or anything bad basically what you've said here should be ok once its written up properly in a letter of notice. Just explain to them why you want to leave.

Besides the job you're currently in atm is only a Temp position, is the Disney one more of a fixed position? Plus if you've wanted to work there for ages, don't pass up this opportunity esp. if it helps you in the future
