Saw the announce elsewhere... Totally entering with Fatkraken.

Damnnagit!!!! I wanted to enter. You guys will be too awesome XD XD.

But seriously,,,,,

I don't have a cosplay partner yet. So not sure if I can enter. I would love to before I completely retire from competing. Anyone up for teaming up with me .

This is great news through. I can't wait to see what costumes peeps put together for this.

I'd love to but I don't think I'm good enough LMAO

I'll be really looking forward to seeing this though!

Snap!

...Do Flammie for WCS tryouts? o3o

Already got costumes, source, and skit planned :3 I'm doing my deconstructions and face/side sketches as I type.

Flammie would need Karen to have something SoM related. Besides, what we have planned is even cooler!

I'm excited already . Can't wait to see you guys do.

Sadly, unless I can get a partner I'm out of the running. I can come up with ideas and possibly a skit but sadly lack the other person. Might just focus on EC instead. I would love the enter the WCS through as it would be awesome.

Can we just give you the spot? Like right now?
I'm excited by what you two have planned now!

Fi that's giving up talk! D8<

We shall do battle against fursuits and epic puppetry with...er...copious amounts of chiffon and tulle....*cough*

(J/K, I'm pretty excited I'll be in the same tryouts as such an epic duo )

Awesome news

But remember everyone, WCS is as much (if not more) about the performance as it is about the costume so as long as you think you can make a well executed costume theres no reason not to give it a go.

Same. I am so excited to see what everyone does. But I doubt I can actually go myself now as I need to find a parter ><
Good luck everyone!

That's very true, the last people who won (or maybe it was the year before), did so because they had a fantastic skit.
Though I would recommend not having anything that relies heavily on words, they won't understand, or at least not very well.

I'm not so confident we'll win anything ;p

There's a lot of people out there who do amazing costumes and performances. The judges might not even like what we have planned. It's just exciting for me to be able to work as a team rather than alone for a change.

Gahh like most other people in here - I'd love to enter
But I have no idea with what and who I'd enter with! oTL

FFF so tempting to have a shot at it though regardless of the outcome, I really fancy making something big :'D

25 Jul 2011 - 15:1364249
Very excited about this ^^ even tho I doubt I'd stand a chance I'd still love to give it a go, no ider what I'd do or who I'd partner with but I'm equally excited to see what everyone dose ^^~

25 Jul 2011 - 15:2964251
bit annoying you have to be partnered, does this mean the costumes have to be related?

With permission from the event in which the preliminaries takes place, cosplayers may audition with costumes from Shueisha. However, the costumes must be changed for the performance and promotional activities in the finals.

What is this all about?

I'm not clear on that part either. I read it as something to do with published Doujinshi manga possibly?

From what Google's pulled up, it seems like Shueisha has banned it, ie they don't want cosplays of characters from manga they publish to be part of WCS.

Haven't found out why yet, but it's not that unusual if you think of it as how Square Enix doesn't let people play footage from their games during Video Games Live whereas every other game company is okay with it. Might be a bad experience in the past or them just not wanting people to confuse those cosplayers with anything official.

Thanks for posting this - that's saved me a lot of time!

I'm so happy to see people taking an interest already and I honestly cannot wait to see what everyone comes up with ^^

Yeah, as you can see, 40% of the points go to performance so it's not necessarily the pair with the most impressive costumes who are sent to the final - the judges will be looking for a balance between the two.

For those of you without a partner - we also announced on Sunday that we'll be hosting the UK preliminary for European Cosplay Gathering next year too. So we'll be sending one pair to Japan, and also 1 individual and another group of 2-3 people will be sent to Paris.

Those entering the cosplay at next year's Hyper Japan will be able to tick a box saying whether they prefer to be entered for WCS, ECG or both.

Yeah good point, I heard about this - there are one or two publishers who don't allow their series to be used at WCS. I'll check with Japan and get back to you!

Aaaah, when this was announced at Hyper Japan I squealed so much that I think I may have scared a few people!
It's about time our glorious nation was entered. YES!
Best of all, even though I doubt I'd stand much chance of getting very far it's ignited a drive in me to want to up my game a bit more, so I can maybe give it a shot next year. *nod nod* I'M ALL FIRED UP, YO~

As I think was mentioned before, it's not about how big or ellaborate your costume is, it's more to do with what you DO with it.
ie. How in character/generally how suitable for the character you are and your performance are MAJOR judging factors (and of course, costume quality). At least, that's how it goes at the finals in Japan. Whether the same applies to regional judging...well, I suppose we'll find out!

Actualy the points break down for the final (I'm not commenting on the quali) from the wiki link is approx:
50% performance (150 points)
33% costume (100 points)
17% extra cool stuff (50 bonus points)

Note that the performance for the final has to be both entertaining and faithfull to the source material.

The points system on Wiki is a bit different to the one I was given (need to check that as well).

But thanks James for pointing out that WCS (and ECG) is primarily a performance competition (although we would expect a minimum costume standard to be adhered to). As you rightly said, there's no reason for people not to enter just because their costume isn't the flashiest one on display!

My guess is that it's something to do with copyright. Shueisha are very strict with their intellectual property rights, I had some dealings with them on that point during my time as a journalist and we very nearly weren't able to print an entire magazine because of it. It makes things tricky because so many popular manga series belong to Shueisha (Bleach, Naruto, Death Note, One Piece, Gintama etc).

The rule seems to state that Shueisha characters are acceptable during the preliminaries as long as the host event agrees to it, they're just not acceptable during the finals. With that in mind, will Shueisha characters be acceptable at Hyper Japan?

Must try and persuade my sister/cosplay buddy to enter with me! Even if the competition is fierce, it would just be amazing to be part of the experience!

Definitely would love to give this a go. The scale of this event is pretty huge. Hate to miss out on this.

Ah coolies. Thanks for the info. Might go for the ECG as I doubt if I'll be able to get a partner. Tempted to go for Eurocosplay as well since I haven't had chance to compete at all this year.

Shame that anyone I would love to cosplay with is Southern based
