Cant believe this.
Just found this post on mcm forums.http://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/view/193466/Big-Brother-goes-batty-/
Im shocked, Im right on the front! Im also disgusted to see what they are saying about cosplayers? No-one was competing for big brother there?! I certainly wasnt, Ive never watched that show!
When I was cosplaying Panty on sunday two people asked me for a photo so I let them take one. I just thought they were normal photographers but then after the photo they told me they were from big brother. Of couse I tried to get away as quickly as I could. I didnt think the pictures would be put on the daily star though!? Im so upset! Is there anyway to report this or am I just doomed!? TT_TT

I didnt go to Expo but when I heard about BB coming I have to say that I was completely and utterly disgusted in this!

It disgusts me enough how arrogant the media can be when it comes to cosplay but this is on a whole new level all together.

The article is an awful generalization about cosplayers. Through experience on the con scene I could never imagine many of us would want to even consider being on the show. I just dont quite see us to be the group of people who likes this sort of show, I know I dont, and I remember the reactions from the 'Snog, marry, avoid' thread.

Done a huge rant on Facebook about this.

Did the typical British thing and wrote an angrily-worded comment.

I'm sure there must be some rule about them using your picture against your will. I suggest complainging. Lots of complaining XD

30 May 2011 - 14:0457937
Same as above, I commented.

They need to get their facts right before they write a bloody article.

I really hope they take your photo down, but I must say, you did look awesome as Panty <3 (I was the girl in white and pink who ninja'd a photo of you <3)

How dare they write that article!! I'm furious about this and way they classify us as 'odd balls' who dressed up just for them!! > I am absolutely disgraced!! It's sad to hear that some people actually agreed to take part ...
There is no way in hell I'd dress up for those losers on that horrid show - every comment that is said so far I agree and I'm really sorry to hear that you're on the front cover - it's an outrage!!

Also, I think I got kinda harassed by one of those talent scouts - this man came up to me with a cam corder and I thought he just wanted to film the event - he then said so tell us about yourself and I replied saying I'm Alice from Pandora hearts (I thought that's the only info he wanted and was playing along)
But then he shoved the camera focusing more into my face and I was like 'OH GOD!' and I said, I don't like being filmed and that I'm shy but then he pulled out a microphone and asked me to speak into it and I just walked away whilst he was in the middle of asking me ridiculous questions like, 'why don't you like being filmed? don't you want to get famous? are you running away from your family?'

I was so close to swearing at him but in the end, I just said, 'NO! and yes I'm sure!' and I just walked off feeling more than angry and annoyed > so I warned my friends bout it but later on, he filmed my friend and she thought that he was doing it for the event but when he whipped out his microphone, she quickly ran and said 'not interested' - I was having a good day til that happened and now reading this ... I'm utterly disgusted!

I was also having a good day until I saw that news post! Sorry to ruin yours and anyone else's day, I just had to post this I cant look at my panty cosplay without feeling a bit sad about it now. I told my Dad and he said, I should sue them... Im looking into it, but Im not sure whether it will be worth it. They did post my picture on their without permission. >.<

If you are going to complain, I'd go to the PCC website maybe xD

Thing is that you said yes to them taking the photo and they are then allowed to do what they like with that photo. It's like Cosplay Portrait have a picture of Emizone and I that they took at Amecon that they used for promotion.

As to the article, the implication is digusting but if you think about the audience that are actually interested in Big Brother who will actually read this without a pinch of salt, they're probably the same types of people that gave most expo goers a hard time in their school days.

We've had this same problem before with Snog Mary Avoid and was it the Mirror or the Star that wrote an article about Ayacon? I forget which paper but it's always slanderous.

Short of getting employment at a newspaper and doing some positive coverage ourselves it's just one of those things you have to accept and brush off, annoying, frustrating and damn right insulting as it is.

Unfortunately, by giving them permission to take the photo and then not requesting them to delete the photo at the time once you were aware they were attached to the Big Brother scouts etc, its unlikely you'll be able to do anything about it now.

I'll just chalk this sort of crap up to why I refuse to attend Expo; the two main organisers dont give a damn how much they offend people or how bad they make the community look as long as the event is still a (financial) success and people keep going.

Overall its also highly unlikely our events and community will gain considerable positive coverage in a news paper - afterall, that won't sell papers and isnt "in the public interest" as much as going "haha heres this weeks/months weirdos of society report!"

I believe the article you may be referring to StreetAngel was actually in the Sunday Telegraph, which made it all the more insulting as myself and my partner were featured in it and i remember the "uhm....wtf" responses from extended family members about it.

Well they were hit hard this May. Apparently they sold less then 3,000 weekend tickets (they sold at least 7,000 last year) the entire weekend was dead. (Although according to this article they had 60,000 people there which is BULL.)

Also their 'fringe' people are really bloody rude, if it wasn't for my friends I probably wouldn't be going any more.

I'm so sorry that this happened to you :'(

Ugh, the media is a disgrace. As if us cosplayers don't get enough stick from them already.

I kind of knew this would end in tears, and I feel a little better about missing it now =[ I don't think I could have put up with all of the drama. Expo has gone down hill majorly over the past few years, The management needs to sort themselves out. All they want to do is exploit fans for finance, They couldn't care less so long as they screw money out of us. =...=

and as previously said, since you gave them permission to take the photograph you wont get very far. Although ,still look into it, just in case they needed some kind of permission to publish it in the paper.

To be far man this doesn't really have anything to do with them. All they did was give a press pass to someone for the reasons they were told (which were probably vague at best).

Copied from the Mcm Expo forum. I dislike doing this, but I think it's the best thing to do given some of what I've heard.

Okay, so there are a few others I have found to be dissatisfield, not with Expo but with the way The Daily Star and Big Brother(Endermol) has handled indivduals unfairly. If you're interested in getting in touch with some of these indivduals send a message to: .
I'm attempting to organise a group rather than indivduals just moaning to get something done about it because it's much more persuasive.
I don't really agree with how this has be handled by Endemol even if it only effect a small miniority of people who attend Expo. I think the word here is respect.

Regards.

Edit: This includes both The Daily Star and Big brother. Seems to be the same guy who was doing the filming.

Actually I'm pretty sure they were aware of what was being planned; one of the two was quoted regarding BB turning up before the event.

So I'm perfectly happy for others to disagree with my perception of it, but I just choose to avoid the event in question to avoid drama/grief and Expo seems to be the bigger source of it on the UK event circuit

Haven't been on here for a while, but I wanted to see how everyone got on at the expo. But DAMN, I'm glad we all agree on this, I really am.

I think that there is already a really big mis-interpretation of cosplay by the general public as it is. A lot of people seem to be under the impression that we're all so sad and lonely that we actually kid ourselves somehow into thinking that we actually ARE all our favourite comic book/movie/anime/manga/video game characters.

The truth is, that it's just for a laugh! I'm pretty sure nobody goes to MCM thinking "God, I'm dressing up as Cloud Strife because I am just SO much like him in every way." MCM really is just like a big fancy dress party, but so many people just don't seem to understand that it's incredible. The only real difference is that some people choose to go as specific characters from their favourite series and stuff.

But the article just makes us out to be, not just oddballs, almost OUTCASTS of society. And it's just so uncalled for, especially as they took these pictures under false pretenses. I mean there's a HUGE difference between volunteering to get your picture taken because you don't mind showing people on certain websites, media forms etc. but it's almost like pasting it on MSN today and saying "WHAT A LOSER."

I just think it's absolutely horrible, it's any wonder we get more cosplayers every year with that kind of stuff going on. I reckon that's also going to make it even worse with people who already think cosplay is for weirdo's, why do they have to make people think we're some kind of attention-starved sad-os?

I wrote and complained on that article.

Its a disgrace how they've degraded cosplayers and the community it has.

I like Expo, but I feel like (even if I didn't attend) they sold their attendee's out to Big Brother which in turns fuels the newspapers. I hope Big Brother gets whats coming to it.

And you should complain, they have no right to post you photo without permision. Its basically breaking the law if you didn't consent to it.

[Edit] Also reading more comments posted in here, she concented to having her photo taken, and Cosplayportrait make it clear on their site/stage about using the photos for publishing, a newspaper is a bit of a different matter... its a more larger scale then a based in community photographer. It all depends on how she was asked about the photo, but if publishing in print was not mentioned and she doesn't want the photo their, she can complain easily.

While you did give them permission to take the photograph, and didnt ask them to delete it once you knew why they took it, they should have told you before taking the photograph.
Pretty sure you have to obtain informed consent to use someones picture in a publication. Not that Big Brother of newspapers give a damn about that sort of thing :/

No they didn't. All they did was issue a press pass. They had no real reason not to give one. Also they could not take it way, esecially at usch short notice, without problems.

This whole thing was not done with any association or endorsement from MCM.

Rain, when I read your post I was horrified! Considering its a large print media, i'm not entirely sure what you would be able to do :/
Please don't feel any differently about your Panty cosplay though! Its honestly fantastic and allowing the lies we know the media spread to ruin it would be sad.

I think everything has just gone to far right now. If people want to take part in BB, then fair enough thats their choice. Though for a media firm to openly criticise cosplayers while spreading lies is out of order! I am appalled by the way they are treating ordinary people like us. Its just plain wrong.

To be fair, at least the BBC atm have been like "hey, look at this... It's pretty interesting" and showing a positive light unlike the Daily Star.

TBH, it's full of crap anyway.

And Rain, it's horrible that they did that. The only way you can actually do something about it is if they did not at all tell you why they took the photo and what it was for. That's against human rights.

Since we're not famous and just average joes, they don't have the right just to take our photos and use it for whatever.

This is terrable. Really low. Gawd :/

I'm glad i didn't get caught up in expo this year now.

The sad thing is that i thought that once you gave them permition to take the photo - if your over 16 - that they have the copyright and the permition to use that photo in any way afterwords :/ even if you didn't know what it was for. But over all i'm not sure on the laws.

But damn they could of at least gave you warning, and they don't even have that many facts to even be able to write that article.

Kinda annoys me but this is media, they always twist things :/

I think this is and this hysteria is absolutely hilarious. This stuff happens all the time and the same thing happens, lots of hot air and then everyone gets bored and moves on. Remember the Ayacon newspaper incident? Another similar incident that caused exactly the same moral panic and then was forgotten about the next week.

Also with regards to sueing someone for using your picture. Best read up on the law as you are going to be dissapointed.

Oh and FYI, both Channel 5 (Hosts of Big Brother) and the Daily Star are owned by the Express Media group. The article is essentially one branch of the organisation advertising another, something which the group is notorious in media circles for. However the article itself is aimed at a readership with an IQ too low to notice this.

I know they didn't endorse it, which is why I said I feel like not did, but I know they only granted them access.

But at the end of the day, its not MCM or BB that are gonna get hurt, its going to be the attendees who can't do much about it that'll be hurt. I can only hope in future, things like this wont happen without real reason. Finding the latest 'oddballs' for a reality tv show isn't really a good excuse to allow someone like BB into where thousands of people have paid to be.
