Forbidden Planet Manga Night 7th March
Hi! I just found out about this event and have decided I really want to go cos it's free! The manga night's going to be on at all of the branches of Forbidden Planet in England (I think...) and there's going to be prizes for best cosplay! (but mine's not going to be ready on time, oh well!) I'll be going to the Manchester one. Is anyone else going to one?

Ooo, this sounds like fun!! Reminds me of the Waterstones Re:Cons, back in the day... *nostalgic sigh*♥

Do you happen to know when the Manchester one starts and ends? Just called the Liverpool one, but apparently they're not doing it...

Lol, it would figure that the Newcastle one isn't doing it either. I even have a 20% off voucher for FP and it's valid in most stores...but not the Newcastle one -_- .

It's like we live in a sort of vacuum for everything fun :/.

Birmingham confuses me. On the site, it has Nostalgia Comics listed. But there is a Forbidden Planet in Birmingham as well... so I have no idea where it is. I'll go and ask in FP tomorrow, it's only 2 mins away from uni so no hassle.

03 Mar 2011 - 23:2751580
They're doing it in Hanley but not London? How odd!

I don't know what the difference is between Forbidden Planet stores and Forbidden Planet International stores :S. It mentions FPI in the blog and I know the Newcastle and London ones are just the plain old FP stores (my damn voucher isn't valid in London either) so I'm guessing that's why.

It's confusing to say the least :/. Does anyone know what the difference is?

Hi! Erm, I'm not sure about the difference between the Forbidden Planet stores, but if you go to their UK website, it gives you a list of all of the FPI stores:
http://www.forbiddenplanet.co.uk/index.php?main_page=store_locations&zenid=f4bkvqr689d03k3r1urj91pjs0

Also, the Manchester one begins at 6pm and ends at 7.30pm. You need to get tickets in advance, which can be picked up in store for free before the event starts. I don't know whether this is the same for all of the shops, you'll need to check beforehand. There's more details about the Manga Nights on each shop's individual Facebook pages, there's a link from the FP site:
http://www.forbiddenplanet.co.uk/index.php?main_page=page&id=75&chapter=0
The only annoying thing is that you have to be a member of Facebook to view their pages! But I know you can view each shop's pages and contact staff to know whether there's an event on or not there. Hope this helps!

Some are owned by the company some are franchises. So they will do things a bit differently.

I might try and make the one at Manchester. I'll see how I feel. Depends who else is going.

Hello.
Just to clear some stuff up, because, like you say, it is confusing.

I write for the Forbidden Planet International Blog (http://forbiddenplanet.co.uk/blog/).

There are two comic shop chains with the FP name. Originally they were one company. But when the company split, the various directors decided to split the stores. Yes, it is confusing, yes we all wish it were easier to explain!

Forbidden Planet International is essentially a Midlands/North/Scotland/Wales/Ireland thing.
Website (list of stores): http://www.forbiddenplanet.co.uk/index.php?main_page=store_locations
Blog: http://forbiddenplanet.co.uk/blog/

Forbidden Planet is mostly in the south, including the London store.

And to add to the confusion, when the company split into two, a rule was established; if a Forbidden Planet or Forbidden Planet International store exists in a city, any new store cannot have the FP or FPI name.
Hence, when Nostalgia & Comics became an FPI store in the 90s, it was not allowed to have the Forbidden Planet International name as there was already a Forbidden Planet store in the city.
Hence Nostalgia & Comics (a great store by the way) is an FPI Associate store.

Hope that makes sense?

The Manga nights are a Forbidden Planet International store event. Details on the FPI Blog and locations of the stores at the link above.

Thank you for the explanation. I thought it was something like that but couldn't remember the details. I mistakingly thought the split meant it went to franchises. It does make sense to me now

I've now got tickets for the Manchester one. Anyone going to that one?
