I want to make some of the jewels/decorations for some of my costumes, because I can't find what I want. I was thinking of using a casting of resin, but I'm stuck on how to make the moulds. Is it okay to use something like this:

to make the moulds? or do I need something more specific?

Latex or silicone are your best bet because you need them to be flexible so you can pop the gems out, but some resins won't set in latex or silicone. If you let me know what sort of thing you were thinking of actually casting in I could find out what actually works for that. __________________  |

The silicone I've linked to is the sort of stuff you'd use in the video sands has linked. The more you buy the cheaper it gets. __________________ |

I haven't cast gems before and looked around a bit, so far the plan is to: 1. Make gems out of fimo and sand until absolutely perfect 2. Make moulds using latex 3. Use resin with resin dye (?) 4. Add chrome backing 5. Profit? Would this work and where is the best place to get the resin and dye (I only need a small amount)? Should I use polyester or epoxy resin or something else? As for dye...I tend to prefer getting glass paints as then the whole batch doesn't have to be the same colour and you can use left over resin to make small shapes for potential later use. But if you're only using the resin for this project, rather than as an investment then maybe the dye would be better. __________________ |

I think I've seen that resin at my local art shop, shall go have a poke! Would you know where I can get some turqoise colouring for resins? If you decide to try glass paint with it, you'll need to do testers. I found a green that always went cloudy no matter how little I used, yet the same brands red went crystal clear. I now use resin dyes to save time and resin as they always work and the tiny pot lasts forever. |

something worth bearing in mind about clear resin, it's VERY difficult to achieve a 100% optical clearness without the use of pressure casting apparatus. you're always likely to get bubbles and clouding. so never feel you're making a mistake if you get a result like that. __________________  |

The results do look real good though!
