I want to make some of the jewels/decorations for some of my costumes, because I can't find what I want. I was thinking of using a casting of resin, but I'm stuck on how to make the moulds. Is it okay to use something like this:
http://direct.hobbycraft.co.uk/products-FIMO-Classic-1-Violet-56g-1.97oz_7534.htm
to make the moulds? or do I need something more specific?

Latex or silicone are your best bet because you need them to be flexible so you can pop the gems out, but some resins won't set in latex or silicone. If you let me know what sort of thing you were thinking of actually casting in I could find out what actually works for that. |

I've checked and it's Crystal resin. If it's the GEDEO crystal resin that most art/craft shops sell I've used it with silicone cake/soap moulds as well as GEDEO's own 'siligum' and they've all worked perfectly. |

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gedeo-Siligum-Silcone-Moulding-Paste/dp/B0027IZOIQ/ref=pd_sim_k_h_b_cs_1 Though you can find the smaller one cheap, the bigger one I haven't found under £20. |

The silicone I've linked to is the sort of stuff you'd use in the video sands has linked. The more you buy the cheaper it gets. |

I haven't cast gems before and looked around a bit, so far the plan is to: 1. Make gems out of fimo and sand until absolutely perfect 2. Make moulds using latex 3. Use resin with resin dye (?) 4. Add chrome backing 5. Profit? Would this work and where is the best place to get the resin and dye (I only need a small amount)? Should I use polyester or epoxy resin or something else? As for dye...I tend to prefer getting glass paints as then the whole batch doesn't have to be the same colour and you can use left over resin to make small shapes for potential later use. But if you're only using the resin for this project, rather than as an investment then maybe the dye would be better. __________________ |

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Diamonds-Ice-Cube-Tray-Jelly-Soap-Mold-Mould-Silicone-/150530504434?pt=UK_Home_Garden_Food_Drink_Wine_Bar_Accessories&hash=item230c5136f2 I'd recommend using silicone for the moulds. Try Tomps value RTV, I'm casting something in it later this week and got it recommended by a friend. For the resin I recommend this stuff: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CRYSTAL-RESIN-GEDEO-CLEAR-RESIN-300ML-/250799517604?pt=UK_Crafts_Other_Crafts_EH&hash=item3a64d0efa4 This stuff is THE SHIT. No smell, 24 hour cast, can paint on the back. Has a slight shrink which means the top of the gem where you poured will be slightly concave, but it's not particularly significant. It's a shame I can't figure out where to buy it in bulk. |

I think I've seen that resin at my local art shop, shall go have a poke! Would you know where I can get some turqoise colouring for resins? ETA: you've probably seen this before but I just found that resin in 750ml quantitiy: http://www.metalclay.co.uk/products/Crystal-Resin-750ml.html Last edited by Pez (08 Jun 2011 - 16:58) |

It was the ultimate discovery when I was stuck in a small flat with no outdoor workspace If you decide to try glass paint with it, you'll need to do testers. I found a green that always went cloudy no matter how little I used, yet the same brands red went crystal clear. I now use resin dyes to save time and resin as they always work and the tiny pot lasts forever. |

Amy-Lou, where do you get your resin dye? I want to make sure I get a brand that'll work with this resin... |

something worth bearing in mind about clear resin, it's VERY difficult to achieve a 100% optical clearness without the use of pressure casting apparatus. you're always likely to get bubbles and clouding. so never feel you're making a mistake if you get a result like that. __________________ ![]() |

I think it's this one but they don't have photos (and the price has gone up sadly): http://www.modelshop.co.uk/product/Pigment_translucent_red_25g_CR10007 I'll take a photo for you when I get home so you can see if anyone else does it cheaper. The good thing about it is you only need a drop to colour a whole batch, so that little pot will really last forever. I bought a red, blue and yellow and don't think I'll have to buy another again XD Edit: It's these little pots:
The label says Trylon - Translucent Colour Paste, 25g for clear casting resin. Last edited by Amy-Lou (08 Jun 2011 - 23:18) |

Thanks - I'll keep that in mind. Quote Amy-Lou:
