Welcome to an awesome hobby.

One of the first things you can do is look at your favourite characters from the series/films you mentioned and see if there are any you like enough to dress up as!

Then look at your options for costuming:
-finding an outfit for sale (eg ebay)
-finding clothes that are similar and modifying them
-making the clothes yourself

If you have any friends/relatives who are good with a sewing machine, it might be a good idea to get on their good side. Or even ask for sewing lessons.

The characters in Scott Pilgrim tend to wear normal-ish clothes, so a good search online or in shops might be a way to start. Here's a link to the Scott Pilgrim cosplays on this site. See if you get any ideas!

Welcome to cosplayisland~!

Answering your question about events, there's the MCM expo, which is this May on the 29th-31st, so it's only in a couple of months. It's in ExCel, which I think is either in or near Canning Town. And Death Note is an awesome manga and anime, I haven't watched the Scott Pilgrim movie yet but I've read the comics, it's epic. XD

About cosplay, I'd also suggest using eBay but if you're good at sewing (unlike me), then you should give sewing your costume a try~! You could also try shopping at Tokyo Toys (if you don't use eBay, like me xD), although I'd say some of the cosplays are a bit expensive, but that's just from my point of view. ^__^

Have fun~!

Hi!
You're not the only one, I've dressed up for halloween and other parties, but haven't ever tried proper Cosplay before, (well that'll soon change when the MCM May expo comes around!) my friend is making my costume, but as the others have said, ebay is good for finding affordable but good costumes, or if you know someone who's quite creative to make it for you,

Welcome to Cosplay Island!

MCM Expo is difinitely a must go event for me as a Cosplayer. Granted usually it's the only one I can afford to get to BUT that doesn't matter LOL

Anyways! Cosplay isn't about skill or getting the "best" fabrics or supplies. Charity shops are a god send and I'm not above using paper patterns one can find in hobby craft paired with some old curtains or bedsheets.

So I say jump in and get to a Con or MCM Expo if ya can! Strut your stuff in ya Cosplay that you choose and as the character you enjoy ^.^ That's what Cosplays about, just have fun with it

New to it, eh? Well, I'll say one thing: Cosplay isn't all about fabric costumes. Some of the best costumes i've seen haven't actually included much fabric at all...For example, "pepakura", if done properly, is a rather effective tool in a cosplayer's arsenal. If you do it properly, you can make entire suits of armour that look good and, with the right extras, you can harden the armour or even make moulds and cast plastic armour. You said you like Star Wars...Maybe look into Boba Fett or a Stormtrooper, for example?

Newbie
Hey I'm new to this too. I have a male friend to attend with but really want to meet some girls who I can chill with/have a laugh with. I'm coming with my bf to the expo but he's not into all that anime stuff. I want to attend all 3 days so really want to meet some girl(s) 'cos I don't think my bf will be too happy chaperoning for 3 days! lol.

A bit about me, I'm 28 and fluctuate between being really smart and mature one minute, then totally stupid and childish the next. I don't seem it at all but I'm well shy which for some reason comes across all wrong and many people misunderstand my shyness for arrogance, it doesn't help that I have no speech filter and say everything I think, but most people like me once they get used to my weirdness.

Anyway, reply if there are any nice girls going

P.S I will be cosplaying as oerba yun fang on one of the days and Yuna (gunner) on another. I might do Zatanna on the third day
