OTT costumes
Alright folks.

This thread is to tell us all your over the top ideas. Have you considered building a twenty-foot-tall Optimus Prime (yes, I know someone has done this, it was a good costume!)? Have you thought of how you'd make the Arbiter's reverse-jointed legs work in a costume? Anything crazy and probably unworkable should go in here, 'cos you never know, someone might have the solution to make it come true.

And if not, we all get a chuckle...

I'll start. The Arbiter was one of mine. I don't think I could do it without some serious calf-strain though!

I once started a Gundam costume >_<

I got as far as the helmet, forearm, torso and rifle until I decided that it was getting a bit boring and I ran out of space to store them lawl.

A few photos are in my cosplay section.

I have, for many years, entertained the idea of getting together with three other girls to cosplay the different incarnations of Sharon Apple. And we'd do a choral performance of one of her songs, probably "A Sai En", cos it's a capella and has several distinct vocal parts.

If successful, the next thing we could do would be the different female characters of .hack//SIGN and do a performance of something from the soundtrack (I've always fancied "In the Land of Twilight, Under the Moon" for this).

The main things that get in the way of this are: finding three girls who can cosplay well and sing well and have the appropriate tone of voice; finding someone who has a good enough ear for music to be able to pick out the different vocal components of the aforementioned songs (I can almost do it but I wouldn't be absolutely confident in my ability to do it accurately); and being able to adequately rehearse the singing before the con.

So I expect this will be never be anything but a pipe dream. But it would be pretty epic if it ever did happen.

any kind of four legged animal (like Kyo Sohma's cat form) there are a couple problems with this though, 1: i'm not a quad-raped, 2: my legs are longer than my arms.

i really really want to do Kirby, and although not impossible, it'd take hundreds of hours of work, probably hundreds of pounds to by the materials for, and also pretty damn hard to move in what with having huuuuge flat feet attached directly to his body and stubby arms.
also, the costume would have to be as round as i am tall (5'6'' and would thus be reeeeeeeally difficult to move around in. T_T

another i wanna do is a Clanger, but that's not quite as impossible. it'll probably a far off future cosplay for expo. i already know how i'm gonna do the feet! ^^
maybe an october expo, not may, same with kirby. ><

if you want to do a four-legged animal and worry about your arms being shorter than your legs, why not simply make small stilts for your arms? that would balance up the length difference.

unfortunately i don't know the other characters, so i can't help there

well yeah but then you'd have an alien bonsai cat type creature wandering round. ><

O.O you don't know who kirby is???????

(not many people know who the clangers are, they're little knitted mice who live on the moon and talk to each other is whistles. ^^)

Those of us of a certain age have very fond childhood memories of The Clangers, y'know.

I really want to do one of the ghosts/gravestones from Bizenghast who has a birdcage with a bird in it instead of a ribcage. It's corset-shaped and oh so pretty.

The problem? I have vital organs in the way of that...

13 Jul 2008 - 01:504620
they're always a bitch, those vital organs...

I am planning Sephiroth's final boss form from FF7 the game. Its got seven wings and no legs but still I want to give it a go. The no legs part might be tricky.

wow, good luck with that one then. i was thinking about doing toshiro hitsugaya's bankai form, but then i thought nah. would be too damn hard, especially for a cosplay noob such as myself XD

@Hexi: I refer you to this - http://youtube.com/watch?v=EB1QDhj22PM

Also, you could always make a Kirby so that you could have your legs poking out the bottom for walking around, but so that you could pull them up inside it and crouch for photos. Or you could attach the shoes to your knees and shuffle about, hiding your feel behind it for pics. There's probably more costumes if you give google or some of the other cosplay sites a quick gander?

As for Kero catform, go look up Gracewing's Red XII(?), she used stilts for the arms, I believe.

Also, also, Soup Dragon!

@Nocturnal Blossom: Well, you can probably build a cage around your waist and make your middle look like a bird or sort of make a corset that looks like a cage with raised bits... hrm, I might need to draw it out. I can see how it could possibly work-ish in my head, but I'm not really sure how to explain it well... d'ya get what I mean at all or would you like some doodles?

As for myself... Angemon/Angewomon with full-scale, fully functional wings... methinks I might need a bit more skillz and quite a lot of monies for those... And that's the more resonable one of my plans... ^^;

13 Jul 2008 - 21:364658
dunno bout fully functional wings, but i had an idea for an angel costume where you could swing the wings out for photos. on hinges. operated by string.

ah, the imagination is a wunnerful thing

Haha I was planning on doing something simular to that with my Penguin Chiyo and other mascot cosplays! Didn't know someone actually tried doing it before though, I don't feel as bonkers anymore! 8D
And seeing that video has inspired me to make my own Kirby costume... Some day... Some day! XD

13 Jul 2008 - 21:454661
There's loads of tutorials for articulated angel wings all over the internet. It's just that Angemon/Angewomon have multiple wings and they're quite large; not to mention that I want them fully anamatronic, which is just silliness really...lol. It's more the expense that's the problem, tbh. (And possibly that the actual costumes probably actually wouldn't suit me at all). I think I'm gonna give a slightly simpler, smaller pair a go first, maybe Dark from DN Angel or something.

Thanks. I doubt that I'll have the wings fuctional. I'm going to alter the design slightly to allow for my legs. Theres no way to hide them completely. I'm already gathering the feathers for it.

i would do this with you though my cosplay skills are still umm 'developing' to put it politely.

so i guess my impposible cosplay would just be anything beyond simpleish sewing although difficult theory for odd working parts is pretty easy.

I'd be up for a Sharon Apple cosplay, definitely. The "Idol Talk" version is pretty cute and I think I could pull it off, though I'm not sure I can sing well enough to help you out.
