Bags, purses and such
When wearing a costume that doesn't have pockets, or doesn't look right with a rucksack/shoulder-bag/handbag, how do you guys carry your money and ID and stuff?

I've been able to use a small shoulder-bag for all my previous cosplays (and either hand it off, or turn so its away from the camera, when being photographed), but for Garterbelt a bag doesn't look right.

I'm considering using a hollowed out book as an improvised purseholder, as he carries his bible about. But what do you do? And can you suggest alternatives?

I usually either try to make/buy a bag that goes with the cosplay, or just carry a normal bag and ask a friend to hold it for me for photos.

When I cosplayed Link (years ago), I made little pouches and sewed them onto my belt (like a camera/phone pouch and a drawstring bag for my monies). That way I could carry my things without having a bag c:
The only other thing I can think of was when I was Zelda and I made a 'shield' bag, as in promotional art, Toon Zelda holds a shield :/

The book idea sounds great!

... This is such a good idea! I love it when people use their own props as a holding place for all their personal items

I tend to keep things in my camera bag. It gets in the way of costumes but I often put it directly in front of me or I hold it behind me or something. That or I sew hidden pockets into my costumes! But that means I can't do any photography because well, can't really hide my camera anywhere xD;

If I can -really- be bothered then I'll make a matching bag. But most of the time I can't...

The hollowed-out book actually sounds like quite a good idea.

It's best to try and find something that would fit with the character if the character doesn't have a bag or pockets. For example, before I decided against doing a Silent Hill nurse cosplay, I was planning to make a small drawstring bag out of the same material as the dress (all grossed-up too) just to hold money, camera and keys. Even something like taking a bag that matches the outfit or that the character would use or has used would look alright.

You can even find ways to conceal a small bag: For Ishta when I get around to making her, I'm going to buy or make a small black bag (clutch size) that can be slung over my shoulder and hidden beneath her short cloak.

For my next cosplay, I'm doing Jill Valentine and I will have pouches that my camera, phone, money and keys will fit into, which will be enough for Manchester Expo. But, when I go to May Expo I'm going to need a bag to store anything I want signed in and also anything I buy (better than lugging round a few plastic bags). So, I'm taking my S.T.A.R.S. bag. Sure, I'm not doing her S.T.A.R.S. uniform this time, but it still fits .

For photos you can always hand your bag to a friend or set it aside, or even ask if the person taking your photograph doesn't mind holding it if they don't want it in the picture.

I picked up a cheap hardback in a charity shop today (it's a Clive Cussler novel, so not one I'm worried about butchering ).

I'm going to hollow it out, and stick a small purse to the inside cover for money/ID. There should be just enough room for my phone too. Any thing else can go in my girlfriend's bag!

I made a Planet Express handbag for when I was cosplaying Leela for Halloween, but normally I just carry round my Super Mario Bros. 3 handbag.

It does look silly as it's bright pink. But I take a lot of stuff with me, specially when I'm cosplaying Faye. Like a hoodie to hide my near-to-naked self when I want to relax for abit, haha.

I don't tend to worry as much with bags - I'm at Expo so I'm going to need a way to carry stuff, and eventually I'm going to buy something so I'll be carrying that somewhere too.

But, to get around this, I usually say to myself one day is for just enjoying the show and costuming, the other is for having a look for cool stuff to buy.

Small stuff I've usually managed to find a way around. Cosplaying Domino I had a utility belt - it was great, I could just put money, tickets, phone, camera, hotel key all in the pouches! When I did Darth Leia I used a tiny shoulder bag shaped like Darth Vader's head. It wasn't necessarily matching what she would wear but it was a little comedy nod! This year I'll probably just take a shoulder bag and take it off when there's photos. I'm usually with a group of friends so it doesn't matter too much, we all look after things for each other for photos

Your idea of the book is brilliant though, very good thinking and in keeping with the character is always a plus!

I think your book idea sounds great

I go for hidden pockets sewn to the underside of my clothes (but not so that I have to strip to get money out XD) or a slave... erm I mean a friend to help carry my stuff.

I'm a bit fail with bags, I always end up carrying a bag with me cos I buy too much stuff and I like to keep my camera on me DX But if anyone asks for a pic I normally just plonk the bag on the floor next to me ^^

Sometimes attempt to theme my bags, like for DBZ ones I have my Goku bag nad Bleach I have a Kon bag :3 It is really handy when the character has a little bag on them though, Bulma had a little belt purse thing which I made just big enough for money, mini camera and phone ^_^ was SO handy!!

Currently in the process of learning about putting sneaky pockets inside my cosplays now to make my life a little bit easier! ^_^

BAG LADY!! xD for cons where I'm driving to... they arent too much of a problem cos I just dump stuff in the room/car whatever and get things as and when I need them. I usually take a small bag with me to put my "con purse" in (only has money, ID and a bank card in (I have MANY big purses in the real world! xD) For pictures and stuff I just sling it in a corner somewhere or ask someone to hold it for me. Even with rucksacks and stuff.. Its not too much of a problem

A minion,,,,,, XD.

No, seriously, I design pockets into my costumes and I choose my costumes carefully depending on how I carry stuff (except for Safer Sephiroth which might require some planning XD).

For one of my future costumes I will be carry a large book so I am planning to build it so that it can carry stuff.

Hollow book totally works. Hobbycraft and similar shops sell ready made cardboard ones that you just have to paint up however you like for a pound or two.

Another option is a pouch on a long string round your neck/off a waistband depending on the costume, just fish it out when needed.

Might look into that, thanks

Most likely going for a box folder if I can find the size I want. I'll then make it look like a book.

Money and ID aren't hard to hide since it's mostly flat. It's camera that's difficult. =_= I struggle to find space even for a diddy camera! Probably doesn't help that I tend to cosplay characters that wear non-baggy stuff.

Ahh, I used the whole hollowed out idea in October ;P
I was cosplaying Miku Hatsune, I didn't wanna carry a bag and props as well, so for my leek prop, I made it open up so I could fit in purse, phone, it was a great place to keep posters in a non ripped state also ;D Good idea.

I sometimes use my bra XD It's an epic place to keep my phone and money when cosplaying.

Generally I carry a plastic bag/tote bag with me ^^ since that looks relatively normal at a con/expo due to all the stalls etc~ And for photos I set it aside or pass it to a friend...

If I can find a relatively in-character looking bag, then that helps, but a plastic one or a tote usually works just fine xD

I take any old bag that kinda' coordinates with the costume XD (colour wise usually)

It doesn't matter, 'cause for photos I give my bag to somebody else or throw it on the floor.. (nobodys gunna nick it with my friends watching over it)

I just use a con bag. I'm buying stuff that I carry round anyway, and I put down my bag for photos, so it hardly seems to matter. Only time it bugs me a little is for parties when it's just awkward to have a bag.
