The New Years' Fitness and Health Thread - ONE YEAR LATER
So some people may remember that I made a thread last year for those of us trying to improve our health or appearance for a new year! Someone suggested revisiting it somewhere down the line, and when better than in time for another year's hard work!

I shall kick off the discussion! My goal for last year was to, through healthy eating and exercise, lose enough weight to drop a trouser size or two, most importantly by fitting into a pair of shorts I was making for a cosplay that were a bit too small.

I failed abysmally 8D I have gone up a trouser size, and although while at university I have been eating quite well, as soon as I got home for christmas I was greeted by so much food that I don't have to pay for D: and so binging occurred, and resulted in my current suffering from chronic food poisoning :/ But when better for a new start than a new year, so when I return to university in a week or so I will start carefully planning my meals for the week to make them extra-nutritious :3 Also, there is conveniently a good-priced gym less than 5 minutes walk from my halls of residence. NO EXCUSES.

To everyone else:

How are you planning on improving your lifestyle this year? What are your goals, and do you have any tips for others? And how did your resolutions last year work out? Begin!

I started my diet on the 1st this year. ^_^
I really want, and need to lose weight, so I can't let myself go this time.

I tend to just diet well, and then I'll get really hungry and binge without thinking.
That's a problem I really need to tackle. xD

I know the feeling! I'd be fine if only my brain wasn't stuck in this mindset that chocolate is something that, whatever the quantity, should be eaten in one sitting xD My dieting is ruined by entire packets of biscuits etc.

Since starting uni I found buying my own food really helps, as long as I have the self control not to buy the naughty food in the first place!

I plan to build some muscle this year by working out twice a week. I did this during the summer and gained quite a bit but lost some of it from september onwards as I got ill
But I'm going to get back into it again!
I aim to put on 11lbs of muscle in 1 year (I know, easy target)

03 Jan 2011 - 20:3647670
I mentioned something like this in another thread I made, however they've changed yet again.

I found it easy if I applied myself to hit the goals I first set. So I'm going to aim higher, and say by the end of each quarter of the year I need to make a significant improvement on my health and building up areas of injury too.

I'm not really fussed any more about how I look as that's not as important as what I'm capable of. So by the end of this year I plan to be able to be able to incorporate a barbell that is the equivalent of my own bodyweight into my weight training routine.

I've also got a Captains of Crush level 2 hand gripper I want to be able to use.

Well last year I did the usual, loose weight, get social life, be more confident ect ect
I never expected much, looking at how all my other resolutions turned out in the past

But this year, I actually succeeded :O

During spring last year, I got a bad infection, and I couldn't eat properly for weeks because of it, and when I recovered my need for food had drasticly dropped

I can now go DAYS with out chocolate- UNHEARD OF FOR ME

And a few months ago I started going to the gym with a friend and I always feel great afterwards.

I guess I kind of cheated since I didn't have to go on a diet or anything, but a tip I can give is that if you plan to join a gym, don't go alone, make yourself a gym buddy!
I have joined gyms a few times in the past but it just went to waste since I was unmotivated, but now that I go with a friend, I enjoy it a lot more and we help eachother out x

And my other resolutions turned out great too 2010 was a good year for me, hope I can keep things up this year!

Mine would be to lose all the weight I put on at University. All it took was one year of copious alcohol consumption and ready meals for me to gain a stone. And the sting was that when I started university was perhaps the only time I have been happy with my size since I was about 12.

I actually lost a few lbs last year, but I want to lose more. I'm about 128lbs, and I'd like to get down to 120lbs. I want to tone up a little also.

That's funny, my one would be to lose all the weight I've put on SINCE uni and a bit more damn office job! I didn't realise it but I was happiest with my size while I was at uni.

Good luck!!!

I don't have a goal as such. But I was really ill just before Christmas and I literally couldn't eat propeely. I think I managed a multipack (which is smaller) bag of nik naks and a third of a chocolate pudding in the space of about 36 hours. I'm better now but I seem to have been left with the side effects of not being able to eat as much as I used to and not being able to put that much weight on, and I'm being more sensible than before, so I'm gradually losing weigh and should have a reasonable shape by May Expo.

This'll be mostly down to what you eat. If you eat right you'll get a toned stomach.

I'm doing the same with my abs.

Actually, watching what you eat won't help tone muscle. I know people who eat healthily and the only ones who have toned stomachs are those who at least do regular crunches.

If you watch what you eat, your stomach will get flat but it won't be firm or toned. I tend to watch what I eat now and my BMI is actually lower than average (still within healthy limits though) but I still have an untoned stomach. Eating right is only half the battle.

Last year, I started going to a gym, around October, then in December, I got out of the habit and stopped going. I was going like. Every night. Not for long periods, space it out over the weekdays.
So my first target is start going regularly again.
Secondly, I wanna watch what I eat. My school, the cafeteria thingy, well. The food is disgusting. So everyone goes out for lunch, just up the street is like. A news agents with lots of chocolate, a Chinese and a pizza place. So I'm gonna start bringing in more low fat/salt foods and just generally cut out bad crap. (Including my life long love, Doctor Pepper -sob- After today, that is... >w>'
And thirdly, I'm gonna dance more, as that will help improve my stamina and yeah.

I wanna lose some weight, my 'flabby' target areas being the tops of my arms and stomach, I'm not like. Obese... But I just wanna nip it in the bud and get more... Lean?

I know exactly what you mean, that's what I'm trying to achieve. Like, I'm a size 10-12 and my BMI is normal and everything. But parts of me are flabby and out of proportion. I'm not worried about weight in particular, more just how everything looks

I've been sticking to my little food plans and eating well so far! I'm trying to get my 5 a day, which is difficult when you suffer from Oral Allergy Syndrome and therefore can't eat raw fruit and vegetables, and also happen to despise the majority of cooked vegetables. Drinking juice is a big part of it, I also absolutely love peppers, so I try and cook them just enough that they don't trigger my allergy, but remain crunchy. I've started grilling tomatoes too, and I've tried eating raw leaf spinach, but I think that sets it off as well :C So tonight I'm going to experiment with chucking it in the oven with my pepper and see what happens.

So in general I'm pleased with how the eating well part of my plan is going so far! As far as exercise goes, I haven't bothered to get down to the gym yet, I have a rotten cold and can barely muster the effort to crawl down the road to Lidl D:

Cooked veggies and fruits are part of the five a day, so you don't need to worry about them being raw. It's the coated with sugar/cream/chocolate versions that aren't allowed... unfortunately.

My diet is alright... Okay, I've been chomping on sweeties and chocolate and cookies etc, but it's only cause it's Christmas. I think it's quite good that I have not gained any weight since leaving the world of forced Physical Education behind!! Thus showing that I cannot loose any weight by eating healthier!

Damn.

Haha, I know they count as part of the five a day, I just don't like them xD Just the smell of cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, mushrooms etc is enough to make me retch! I'm trying to experiment with things I haven't tried before, as best as I can on a student budget!

Well this year I've decided to for-go my usual trick of a zentai suit and actually have parts of me on show which would usually be covered for my Main Cosplay of MCM May 2011! Said parts being my legs and stomach. However I currently have a flabby stomach that jiggles when I run D8 So with the help of the Wii Fit Plus my family got for Christmas I intend to loose said jiggley-ness and tone myself up for May!
TBH this would also help stop my lover from poking me in the stomach saying I has jiggely belly, he says it playfully but I hope that my efforts shall give me a more tonned and sexy looking stomach *rawr* ;3 LOL

My goal is to get at least 40mins worth of exercise in every other (if not each and every) day. This exersize will also help me stengthen my legs so I can wear the didigrade stilts I'm making for longer without leg ache.
So far so good as I'm already feeling a lot fitter than I did this time last year. I'm also gonna try to cut down on junk food but with money so tight atm I can't exactly say I'm going for the whole healthy life style.

WISH ME LUCK 8D

I'm currently looking into going swimming a couple times a week. Asked my mum to come with me also as she wants to get fit, it might make us more motivated if we do it together.

Oh and most of you prob know this but I didn't so thought I would mention it: You should only do cardio exercise around 3 times a week. Don't think if you do it everyday you will loose weight quicker as apparently this is not good for your body. I've been told the same goes for doing sit-ups and other toning exercises, but you can mix the two together.

So I plan to go swimming about twice a week then do a toning exercise routine to focus on my stomach (crunches, the plank etc) about 2-3 times a week the days I'm not swimming.

Ahh! I love peppers! 8D
Yeah, I'm like. Size 10... I'm fine with like... My weight and stuff, but it's just like... Toning up.
I'm gonna try and get more healthy whilst I'm at it, I'm cutting out my beloved Doctor Pepper (</3) and I'm gonna try to eat more home cooked meals rather than like. Processed foods, I don't like ready meals anyways so no problem there. Gonna try to drink more water too.
I'm gonna start eating healthier breakfasts, like... Porridge or greek yoghurt and fruit, it's lovely with peaches... <3
Mushrooms are prolly my favourite vegatable...
You could maybe try to make something like a vegatable soup or something? Normally I hate it, but homemade, it's really nice. And not even too hard~! After making, you can freeze it for when you next want some too

13 Jan 2011 - 13:5948286
Good way to get started on porridge; Redybrek.

Man, I love that stuff.

Chocolate redybrek with a banana :F!
