Media and Cosplay
Edited this because it seemed personal.

What's people's opinions on the media reaction to cosplayers?

Such as the stories about certain TV programmes asking cosplayers to go on, and whatnot. And them programmes being offending, or polite.

Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

I can't say this line of discussion pleases me greatly. Seems like you're hinting you've got a problem with someone specifically but rather than taking it up with that person you're opening it up for a community discussion. I don't see how this can end well.

I'm not going to lock this right now but I have my eye on this turning into a drama magnet.

EDIT: As you edited your original post so drastically my comment here may now look a little out place. But I'm leaving it here as a reminder the forum is not a place for working through personal matters.

She has a freedom of speech, the little say that this century has.

There has been many threads that have started drama and you decided to comment on this one only?

She didn't have her previous thread pointed towards anyone as she is my girlfriend and she even asked me about posting it, both of us have seen bullying in the community and wanted to know peoples thoughts on it.

You seem to have a problem yet you pasted the post on in such a spiteful way. You upset her to the point she phoned me and told me while i was in college so she changed it.

She isn't posting for drama only opinions.
ALSO you said 'the forum is not a place for working through personal matters.' yet theres a general discussion option for this forum and she was asking about bullying in the cosplay community in general, not her personal matter or anyone else's, just opinions on it.
You're 29 shes 14 maybe you could of told her by pm and asked for the details before stating the wrong purpose behind her post and upset her for no reason.

I am posting because i love her and i am a girl who wont back down if someone close to her is upset or hurt, i have nothing against you but your post was unnecessary (and you could of just locked it without posting something like that?)

You know what would be a good idea? Locking or deleting the thread altogether so that a new one can be posted which doesn't hint at personal issues and can, instead, be a discussion.

The thread should have just been locked in the first place imo. Sometimes people get annoyed and need to tell someone. Retaliation doesn't help matters, especially if the person edits their post 'drastically'.

I agree, i just don't like how an andmin said something so harsh in my eyes to someone dear to me and i can't back down no matter how much it wont help, just the way i am and been brought up to be like

'never let anyone push you around or take your freedom from you' sorta thing.

Anyway, on with the topic.

With something like this it's quite mixed. With the factual/news side of the media things have been pretty good. I've personally spoken to a few people and it has been pretty good.

The BBC produced a very good report from May Expo this year:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e17bxv1rk3I

Also a couple of years ago there was this World Record event that was covered for Newsround:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVRkbS7Fqnw

Both of these were positive pieces.

My only bad experience personally was with the website for Computer and Video Games magazine. This was at the launch event for FF XII. I wasn't really in cosplay at the time but they did make some nasty comments about me and quite a few other people.

Another website, Eurogamer, was bad. It wasn't just the article but also comments left by users. I won't really go in it more, as it really isn't my place to say anything. Certain web sites can be a problem as they want to look cool to just the wrong people.

The biggest problem with cosplay in the media comes from fiction. Writers who just don't research anything and create bad characters that people take as being true to life. Worse thing is they mostly play to negitive stereotypes.

For example, in May this year (coincidentally the day before Expo) the BBC daytime soap Doctors had a cosplay themed episode. While I can forgive that they couldn't use anything copyrighted, how the scene was protrayed was awful. Firstly, it began with one of the regular characters giving out condoms at a cosplay event. No-one in the real world would think that this is a good idea. Next, the whole story revolved around a character who had limited social skills and was being sabotaged by someone. He also gave up cosplay at the end of the whole thing after 'growing out' of it. The other cosplayers were just nasty people. It was just wrong, wrong, wrong.

Most fursuiters hate C.S.I. for one episode in the Las Vagas series. I won't go into that, however there was also a bizzare series of events in the New York series. It involved an assassin that used Second Life to kill a US Senitor. It showed that all cosplayers do is go to club as their avatars. Just their use of the term 'cosplay' made me cringe.

Sadly freedom of speech doesn't extend to this private members site and its forum where actually we can ban or censor people however we like. Obviously we try to be a friendly site here and let people say whatever they like I know all of us admins are generally against censorship and prefer not to lock or edit threads until they've descended into drama.

The thread was brought to my attention as a potential drama thread. And I commented in what I felt was a fair manner. The original post which is now lost through her editing, in my opinion alluded to her having problems with other members of the community and wanted other people's opinions without naming names. To me this had the potential to get nasty fast so I just threw up what i thought was a fair warning without actually stopping the discussion. Her decision to re-edit it to an entirely different subject seemed a bit like gaming the system to me.

I didn't pick this one thread specifically, I look at anything that is flagged up to me as a problem. Typically it's already been dealt with by our moderator Sean or sometimes the issue has died down already. I just wanted to head this one off before it got going.

If you think there's bullying going on within the site then if it's flagged up with the admins we'll deal with it as best we can. Or if it's a personal matter you can talk directly to the person involved. However I'm not happy with the forum becoming a place where people take potshots at each other, even if names aren't mentioned. There's quite enough of that on 4chan already.

I see the general discussion area as a place to talk about what games you've been playing, what food places you like, anything random and not cosplay related. But that's not the same as "let's talk about people within the community who piss me off".

Sorry to sound even harsher but I'm a busy guy and doing admin work on this site is something I do for free when I get time. I'm not a guidance counselor and am not going to start messaging everyone on the site who sounds vaguely upset and get into their personal issues.

We really don't like locking or deleting stuff. We really want people to feel we're not looking over your shoulders all the time and restricting what you can talk about. However the two things we do intercede on is commercial advertising and personal drama which we try to keep to a minimum on the site. And in this case I felt I offered fair warning that I was concerned that's where the thread would go but wasn't going to lock it so the discussion could continue. Had there been no drama then I would have left it alone at that point.

That's all very noble and inspiring stuff but I've locked the thread now. So from my perspective this should be an end to it. You're welcome to try and "push back" however you feel is appropriate.
