fireworks and pets - Please delete this!
EDIT - Please delete this thread. I cant have an opinon on CI anymore so I wont bother posting anymore.

Ok, so it was fireworks night last night and yet all the stuff is going on tonight.

Now as much as they are pretty I hate them! My poor dog and many others I know of have serious issues with them.

My dog right now is sitting in the lounge panting like a nutter, dribble all over the place, he has messed himself twice becuase he is so scared.

I think its about time someone did something about this, its not just dogs its cats and all other animals.

Fireworks should be banned in residental areas and only be in parks like crystal palace, and such like.

Its so sad to see my dog like that becuase I cant comfort him because it makes it worse.

What does everyone else think?

I agree with what you say about fireworks only being in a public park/place. When fireworks are set off, my cat runs away for a few weeks so i hate it when the neighbours have fireworks, but i've recently started to notice that the council around where i live put on special bonfire nights and fireworks and encourage people to go to that and watch, so it's getting a bit better. I don't think members of the public should be allowed to buy the bigger fireworks to be honest, maybe just sparklers or the ones that don't go up in the air. Would be much safer. Or there should be a time or something that they're allowed to be set off. People here set them off when it's light?? and at around 2am. :/

I live next to a park and the fireworks have been going on since thrusday nite and still are going on at all hours of the night!

im lucky my cat is ok around them she just watches them quite amused but have had huge problems with my pets in the past so i feel your pain hun,

the worst thing is i live in a area with alot of older people and alot of mentaly disabled people who have gotten scared and lashed out at the carers and other people in the street because they are scared of the fireworks

and our phonebox has been melted as stuped youths have put fireworks in them lit and tryed in the mail box to ......................

it causes alot more trouble than it is worth

The place where i live has people about two doors away from each other and the still set off fireworks seperatly and theres even a display at the local park, I so agree with you, my horse practically falls on the floor at the sound of fireworks and my dog....well she's currently in a dark dark room that is pretty much soundproofed....

When I was with my friend the week before expo weekend it was around 3pm and someone let off a firework in the street!

Also had one go off at 4am this morning, its stupid. I have known peoples pets to die because of them.

They really should be banned in residenatal places.

I was wondering how long it would take until a thread like this appeared. I still remember the lolacaust that was last years shambles.

I don't think banning fireworks for everyone in residential areas because it makes your dog shit itself is a very good arguement. Pets always have a bit of a difficult time, but its for 2/3 days a year. Just keep them indoors and occupied. If your dog can't handle that then thats not everyone elses problem.

My cats don't like fireworks, but that doesn't mean i'm calling the fire brigade/assetco to put out the bonfire a few doors down. I'm not going to be stopped celebrating an established tradition because Mrs Merrywethers hamster at Number 42 has the shakes....

If it was such a cataclysmic problem it would have been banned by our increasingly officious health and safety culture already.

our dog just isnt bothered by them. he willingly goes outside on fireworks night and sniffs around. he doesnt even raise an eyebrow!

but if your pets are skittish on such nights, then a lot of pet shops sell special medications designed to calm them down. i know Pets at Home sell a lot of them at this time of year. totaly harmless to the animal, and they really work well by all accounts. may be worth taking a look for some of you.

This. Pretty much.

You're making a massive fuss. Okay so your dog has is scared of the fireworks, but its as Leadmill said, for 2 or 3 nights of the year, at the most 5.

I've had four dogs all through my life and only one of them have ever had issues with fireworks. We would let her hide under my parents bed and she'd be fine there.

You've had plenty of warning about Bonfire Night, I mean its an annual events for goodness sake, so you've plenty of time to find a way to keep your dog calm. As Fishyfins said, getting some kind of calming remedy for a pet store is a good, easy option and are known to work very, very well.

Just because you dislike the fact that the fireworks panic your dog doesn't mean you should take away the fun from everyone else.

That's how dictatorships are formed.

get a DAP collar or the plug in things... i use them for my cat and dog and they havent looked twice at the fireworks.....
ppl around my area have horses and other types of pets but if you keep them indoors and keep there mind occupied they will be fine....... (play tug of war with your dog, the noise they make will stop them hearing the fireworks and it will also help tp calm your dog)

TBH worst comes to the worst I pop them in a room with a loud TV on, that usually helps them relax, especially the older of my dogs meg who likes the sound of the TV especially since she is losing her sight.

Haha, I work at Pets At Home so here's some shameless advertising! Nah I kid! To be honest, I do enjoy looking at fireworks and stuff but I agree that they are a problem with pets. Over this past 5 days we've sold out completely out of our DAP and Feliway pheromone stuff and people have said it's worked great, but some people's pets are still badly affected even with helpful substances such as these.

Best thing I've been suggesting to people (including Ryuk's dogs!) is to keep them as comfortable as possible, try and block out the noise by providing entertainment, and don't fuss them if possible because that reinforces the fear. It is a hard time for them but like others have said it's only for 2-3 days, (a week at most), and it never does any lasting damage to the pet thankfully

I know my dog is terrified of fireworks: I usually sit with him and comfort him, but because I'm at uni my Mum has that honour XD
Apparantly the kitten (whose about 5-6 months old now) LOVES fireworks: I was told today that all last night he was watching all the pretty lights, but jumping at the bangs. He's such a crazy cat.

Except... isn't that what you called everyone in your post before you edited it? Whatever, I can't be bothered to argue. Just don't be rude to people that give you advice when you asked for it.

Ummmm....

Anyway, am I getting de ja vu? |: Pointless thread is pointless. If you're dog's having trouble there are plenty of ways to calm them down. I know, my old dog was terrified. But complain all you want, people are not gonna stop a national holiday because you have to clean up shit once or twice a year.

*waves to Leadmill* Hey dude :3

I can't help it, you've overlooked something

Quote Leadmill:
but its for 2/3 days a year.

New year, 4th July, chavs with spare cash (I know right; oxymoron), Diwali, Eid, Chinese new year, and my personal favourite; Vaisakhi.

Don't take the fireworks away from us ;_; We'll be ever so sad, and we're legally allowed to own swords >;D tehehehehe

There's loaaaads of days when fireworks get set off. Sure, not as concentrated as new year or 5th november, but it all still happens.

If anything I'd like to see the guys who threw the firework at us from a moving car, get sterilised.

People have an opinion differing to yours and you can't really handle it?

Hmmmm.....the world sure works in mysterious ways doesn't it?

Grow up.

Well, it's true that fireworks night can be a difficult time for a lot of animals (having said that, my cat is terrified of everything) BUT all I've seen on tv for the last month or two was adverts about DAP and other calming stuff for pets. So it's not like people haven't been warned.
Have to agree with Leadmill on the banning front though, it seems we're allowed very little fun stuff anymore but if fireworks are still allowed then I'm happy to take what I can get!

And we were worried you were going to overreact!

In all seriousness, just because somebody doesn't agree with you, it doesn't mean that you "can't have an opinion anymore", it's simply someone else having an opinion different from your own.
And by you making such a fuss over it, it's going to make other people feel like THEY can't have an opinion of their own, so how does that make you any different?

And before you claim that I'm somehow attacking you or anything of the sort, I'm not.

In short, don't ask "What does everyone else think?" if you're going to throw a wobbly over other peoples' replies.

Lulu Rose don't you tell me to grow up. At least I can make sure a commission is done on time and not ruin something fir someone. So you need to grow up.

I'm over this thread so yeah just all of you go flame someone else. To everyone who was nice thankyou for understanding.

Look, if you ask what everyone else thinks about a topic you post, then they are going to give you their honest answer. Not everyone is going to agree with you as can be seen by this thread. If you're not prepared to have people giving different opinions to your own, then the answer is simple - don't post threads that can lead to a debate!

It's no surprise that you're being told to grow up with responses such as your last post - dragging in completely unrelated things (Lulu Rose's commission work?) just to make yourself feel bigger and better? I'm sure there is a completely valid reason as to why it wasn't finished on time, hell, it wasn't even your commission. Why bring that up in the first place considering it has absolutely nothing to do with you?

Honestly, no need to throw a paddy just because people aren't 100% agreeing with what you say.

Oh WOAH this just proves everyones point love.

Don't go spewing this at someone when you have NO IDEA of the reasons behind why that happened. You have absolutly no clue so don't even start. And the reasons not everyone knows why? is because only the people who should know, know the reason why.

Honestly? WHAT is your logic exactly with that? I'm immature because I couldn't finish a commission on time so I offered a full refund or a fair amount of money back and for the wig to still be done. I also gave my reasons for why I couldn't complete it.

HOW does that make ME immature?

So, someone points out to you that you are being immature, you then go on a personal attack....nice.....really...really nice.
