"I can't believe I did that!"
I've been cosplaying for a very long time, but it's only really recently that I think I could say my costumes were anywhere near being good. So now I look back on my old costumes and often find myself cringing at how much shoddy workmanship I let myself get away with.

For one thing, I used to hand-stitch everything, without exception. I did try buying an inexpensive, mini-sewing machine once but couldn't figure out how to use it, so I swore hand-stitching would do me just fine. Finally caved in a couple of years ago and bought a proper (but still mini) sewing machine for reasons that I don't quite remember, and now I don't know how I ever thought my messy hand-stitches were any good.

I've used an assortment of terrible wigs and not seen what the problem with them was. I made a bodysuit out of two pairs of ripped tights. I've figured that using my own hair was better than buying a wig, even when my hair was completely inaccurate, and I've had some horrible makeup schemes. Oh, and my Ririn costume that I'm actually quite pleased with now? When I dug the dress out and went back to start tailoring it properly for London Expo, I discovered I never bothered putting any lining in it (the buttons on the front are also purely cosmetic because I can't make buttonholes to save my life).

So, does anyone else have any cosplay confessions? Anything you did once due to inexperience or lack of time that you're horrified by now?

not hemming my Princess Ai skirts. it looks awful. also, i can't believe i ever let my mother sew the "lacing" onto the front of that dress. and i also decided my hair was ok to have as my princess ai hair. wish i bought a wig now.
and i STILL csn't believe i let my mother draw eye brows onto me for that first expo! Dx

i haven't been cosplaying long so i still think some of my stuff is awful.

For my Riku cosplay I didn't know I had to burn the edge of the ribbon so it frayed so much! XD Also instead of lining the jacket with yellow fabric I just put a random slab of fabric on the bottom and left the edges to fray at the back. Though when I bought the wig I knew it was hideous so I used 3 cans of white hair spray and my friends attacked my hair with it, yeah, we were all suffocating because we did it indoors XD; My jeans were inaccurate too, and oh gosh that black vest! I didn't even hem it! XD I just cut it in half [wonky xD;] and stitched on the zip without hemming the edges, and the arm hole has a massive slit in it because I cut it too far so I can't take off that white jacket because of that reason XD;

My moogle cosplay is kinda bad too, when I made it I was like 'Yay! I made a moogle cosplay! It's my favourite cosplay now! 8O' and now... I had it XD; It's made out of cotton, you can clearly see the whole in the back, the zip doesn't match the fabric and I didn't even cut through the chicken wire so you can see through it 8D;; Though I'm rather proud of the bodysuit itself...

My Kouga top is cringe-worthy too, it's made out of polycotton! XD; Sure it made me look more boyish but still I thought it was rather tacky xD;; It looked good when others used fabric ;__; Next time I plain on using craft foam to make it look more like armour 8D;;

I still think I'm a bad cosplayer, but hopefully the more costumes I make the better I become ='D Well... that's the theory xD;
There seems to be a trend coming along, I use chicken wire a helluva lot! Same goes for craft/funky foam ever since I discovered it xD

Lol it makes me laugh how you guys cringe over not lining cosplays! I never have and probably never will. It's just pure lazyness.

Most of my cringeworthy things are like inaccurate hair because I was terrified of wigs (I now have so many i've lost count.) and not hemming things properly. I don't think i've made any *SHOCK HORROR* mistakes yet....*touch wood.*

Haha I never line my cosplays because it costs extra money 8D; I just don't see the point since no one would ever see the inside of my cosplays and polycotton is usually a very comfy fabric anyways so there's no need xD. It's just that with my Riku cosplay it was shown in the reference it was actually lined so I cringed at not lining it [especially since you could see fabric, hair spray dust [because I sprayed my hair WITH the jacket on xD;] and thread everywhere on the inside 8D;;]

MAYBE I should have lined my Sakura skirt cause it was an open skirt, but phooey that would have cost 4m of fabric! I'm too stingy with money to line it! XD

I actually never used to bother with lining my costumes unless I really, really had to. Then I made my Sephiria coat and fully lined it, and it felt so much nicer to wear and looked so much better for it. So I'm kicking myself for not lining my costumes sooner ^_^

my biggest regret was buying my Rikku (X-2 thief) bikini top. It was a stringy bikini and had no support at all, also spent the whole day riding up my boobs and therefor exposing myself all day! next time I'm so making one with proper cups hidden in it!!

i never do lining. and extra layer of fabric doesn't look so hot. XD
i will be lining my Sakura dress though DX so much money to spend! T_T

i think the reason why i never bothered is because i don't really know how to do it properly. i know how but i never really..... KNEW. that doesn't make sense but hey. XD plus money problems. ><

i don't regret any of my old cosplays as they helped me to get where i am no and hopefully will keep climbing that ladder, but "I can't believe I did that" cosplay must go to my Pokemon Gijinka! oh the lols had over me and my friends for that one.

it was fun and we knew it would never win but it was one of those group ideas that seemed good at the time.

Forgetting that elastic banding stuff (even with the fabriciness) dosn't take dye. I forgot I tried once before years ago with some straps for dance shoes. And, waiting to dye them the day before I had to leave for expo, leaving no time to get stuff for replacement straps. (Hence the straps on my Rikku shirt are white). Hopefully next time I'll be deciding on/working on a costume sooner than a week before I need it.

Fail cosplay as Shirisaki Ichigo. Found out I was coming to JapanEX two nights before the actual event so I was running around like a headless clicken trying to scramble together what I could find. No time to buy a wig, no time to get proper facepaint. Ah well, at least it was my first cosplay.

I'd have to say my Edward Elric cosplay. I only decided a week before the Expo (May 06) that I was going to go as Ed so I got a red coat in M&S, a black jacket which I added white ribbon to the edges.
I didn't wear a blond wig so I really didn't stand out ^^;

Inexperience or lack of time? Still suffering from that now I've been cosplaying for a fair while now and its only just in the last few conventions where I've made costumes that are actually completely sewn together. I.e. Not half made of glue and strategically pinned together in the hotel room! I'm most guilty of this for my Dirty Pair Flash costume, the white bodysuit was only half made, the rest of it was completely pinned together. Meant that I was forced to change because I needed the loo and wouldn't have been able to get back into the costume

Its quite amusing, Amy-Lou and I were chatting about our cringe-worthy old costumes yesterday - I haven't put a fair few of mine up on here yet, but I will do for laughs when I get some spare time. If nothing else, I think its good to look back at your old costumes and at least say "well...that's how *not* to do it.."

I'm a right cosplay n00b, though I like to believe in the adage that you get better with practice. I had the same hair colour as Pearl Fey so when I cosplayed as her at Ame last year I thought "Fantastic, no need to buy a wig!"

It looked oh so very bad. My problem is that there's a wave in my hair at about ear level so my bangs wouldn't hang properly. Then I committed another terrible mistake...

I tried to use hair wax to straighten it out.

So in the photos it looks like I haven't washed my hair for a week, and it STILL had the flippin' wave in it! Boohoo, fail T_T I will be using my own hair for Lamiroir this year, but only because the only bits that will be showing under the cloak are my fringe and ponytails. Even then I have some extensions lurking around that I may use instead.

Another fail point of my Pearl cosplay was the footwear. I couldn't get pink flipflops to match apart from these two-sizes-too-big ones from TJ Hughes. Needless to say, they were agony to wear, and stupid me had no pink fabric to wrap around the bar that goes between your toes, so in photos you can see scraps of dark brown fabric showing.

And the last big mistake was the stretchy pink dressing gown I bought to go underneath the coat. Hemming that was a sewing nightmare, and in my n00bishness I had no idea what stitch setting to use to make it sew properly. I got it done eventually, but phwooboy stress!

I'm now onto my fourth cosplay and like to think that I'm a little older and wiser, but there's still so much that I don't know... that I often find out I don't know only when I go to actually do it!

Oh, haha, I should mention that the Pearl Fey cosplay was recycled from the Maya Fey cosplay I did for our anime soc's allnighter - the pink underdress for THAT was made from a man's size pink shirt that I cut the sleeves off (no I didn't even bother to do anything with the sleeve holes after chopping!). I then cut the sleeves open, cut off the bottom half of the shirt and used the fabric from the cut open sleeves to extend the shirt to make it into a dress, all the messy stitching being hidden by the obi! And after all that, it was too short anyway so you could see the black shorts I was wearing underneath it. oh the shame!

Interesting post. Yes, I do look back at my early attempts at cosplay (back in '89-90) and I do cringe. Its taken years of practise to get to the level I'm at. I do line most of my stuff now it makes it stronger. I do tend to repeat wear most of costumes as its cheaper. Even after 16 years I'm still finding out how to do things. For Sephiroth's armour it will be my first time moulding plastic. For Abel Nightroad it will be first time using Wondeflex.

I do enjoy learning new techniques. I think it can be fun and also looking back at old costumes can be fun as well. I'm tempted to post some of my older costumes so you all can have a good giggle.
