Neon Genesis Evangelion
opinions on this?

i just watched it through for the first time, and i have mixed feelings on it. on the one hand i thought the idea was good, but on the other hand i thought the writers handled character development very badly towards the end. and they tried to be too clever in the last episode especially. and what was with the spots of repeated animation? gaah. talk about annoying!

for me the bad things just outweighed the good, and ruined what could have been a touching, exciting living-robot-fest.

I haven't seen this all the way through in a long time. And probably worse for me is that I watched the last two episodes in Japanese - I'm pretty good with subtitles but when you're watching all the flickering images and trying to catch what's going on its really difficult to read and do that at the same time.

But from what I remember I do actually like Evangelion, which is surprising because I'm not normally into mecha anime. But I quite liked the characterisation, it was interesting seeing how all the characters became twisted and stuff towards the end. Although I admit several scenes did irritate me if I remember rightly.

Also I'm not sure but I think someone said they ran out of budget towards the end of the series, so that's why there was all that repeated animation and apparently when watching Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death and Rebirth that is where they actually end it how they wanted the series to end. (Personally I think Death and Rebirth is a lot better than the actual series).

Though I really should watch it all through again, but that's what I remember from it. I was just glad with how it turned out, its a good series, but does require some thought (and in my case patience because Shinji annoyed the hell out of me) but that's neither here nor there.

I'm going to slash your pillow and tear out all the stuffing with a motorbike made of jelly.

I've seen Eva a few times now, and I will admit that each time I see it, I like it a little less. This because there are some absolutely awesome bits, and some real trite. There were two problems with Eva- one Gainax did indeed run out of money while making the series, hence the last two episodes. Secondly, the overall plot ended up being hijacked by director Anno to discuss father issues. This is why the Shinji - Gendo stuff is pushed to the front so much. I'd recommend reading the manga, which was written after the anime and is purely the Eva plot. It's very slow to come out, but is much better. Though it will never have the visal impact of the anime.

Behind_you, I think I actually agree with you there. I still enjoy the anime but that might be for old times' sake, so I wouldn't be surprised if I made one of my friends watch it and they didn't enjoy it. I think the big hype about Evangelion is how the visuals raised the bar for anime and it cannot be appreciated if you've watched lots of newer stuff before you watch evangelion. A bit like if you're a bit of a film buff and you've never watched Pulp Fiction you're not going to enjoy it the way others did.

A lot of people try to be too arty with stuff like this and it risks losing the viewer whilst making a point that the creator forgot. Sometimes the simplest methods work best like Donnie Darko. Whilst we're at it, Serial Experiments Lain was another one with a disappointing ending!

Oh and Alisa-Chan! Thank you for recommending the manga, I wasn't sure if it was another gimmick to make more money from the evangelion trademark, but it sounds like it might be worth the ride! Thanks!

I'm not anti-social, I just appreciate silence

No worries. I like it at least Better than another Rei or Auska statue me-thinks. It is very very slow at coming out though. This appears to be actual writing of the manga, Viz aren't too bad at releasing it.
