Big Hat Help!
Hey guys, I need to make a really huge brimmed witches hat and I'm after ideas for how to structure it.
Thankfully the point is supposed to flop over, so it's finding something that can make a huge circle brim stay up.

Thank you

Yay! Making hats is fun! My business partner is a milliner so i know a few tricks

You could invest in some millinery material such as sinamay (http://www.randallribbons.co.uk/shop/sinamay.htm) or buckram or use a layer of thick material which is stiffened using fabric stiffener til it remains sturdy and flat. You can then stitch this between the material for the outer brim and an inner lining.

You can also use brim reed, a fine plastic wire which is used to stiffen the outer edge of brims in hats. A alternative is to use a fine flextible wire such as the cheap green garden wire you can pick up at places like wilkinsons.

I used cardboard for the brim Prime's pimp hat. That seemed to work reasonably well.

I hadn't thought of having a wire ring hold the tension. Though it might be a bit too wide for that alone to work...maybe spokes of some kind too.

I'm going to do some tests with stiff materials/card and wire ^^

Ah I just seen the costume you're planning it's SO cute!!! If you use an awful lot of stiffening you should get the right effect. For that sized brim it is perfectly reasonable if you use the proper millinery techniques after all you get hats with MASSIVE brims ^^
